I'm not sure of the security risk of having a FB account that emails me when I get invitations. It's not like I'm letting the app run roughshod on my phone, or posting images of myself (or anything.) I mean, they can put together my social graph, but they already have that by scanning my friends' contact lists.

I have a fb account in case my friends set up an event invite, but other than that I try to use it as little as possible.
My fifth option is I created the account, never used it, forgot the password, account is locked, not sending a picture of my driver's license in to unlock it. FB is probably monetizing it somehow...

Ooh, the anonymous coward called me a name. I suppose I should go cry to my mama now. If I don't post, don't comment, haven't filled out my profile and log out afterwards, the big bad folks at fb have probably made about 45 cents off of me and know almost nothing interesting about me. I'll take that trade off for the ability for my friends to get a hold of me when needed. If that makes me a tool then so be it.

Speaking as someone diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (sociopath and psychopath aren't medical conditions), I haven't seen something so completely moronic is a while and that's saying something today. NONE of the "results" apply to me or have anything to do with the condition and only two of your "signs" are accurate. Insufficient for RSVP invites, which is 90% of the invites I get on FB. Similar to the OP, my FB account exists for a few very specific reasons and contains nothing about me I would be unhappy to have publicly shouted in the center of my city of residence or my workplace.

And do you always remember to log out of the account, clear your cache and cookies, etc.? Because otherwise, Facebook is probably keeping tabs on all your other online activity, and most of the websites you visit will correlate your visit to your FB logon.

Like the subject says. I have an account. My friends can keep me in their friends list. I can get alerted if someone tags me in a photo I don't want to be tagged in. But I don't login or use it otherwise.
I see little hazard in keeping this status quo. Deleting my account seems rather pointless -- I simply no longer maintain it or add content to it, or even log in to see what mundane things other people are posting about.

I'm in a similar boat, I have an account that I check every few months. I never let it touch my phone, and I only log in from a chrome incognito window... while I'm very certain that facebook is actively working to overcome the limitations of incognito mode, I haven't seen a lot of evidence of active tracking like I do with other information harvesting platforms (like Amazon and Google)
At some point I will probably delete FB, but A) I don't feel a strong urgency to do so, and B) I don't think that deleting

I don't know what I'll do with my account. I don't really use it except to see pictures of nieces who live across the country. I very rarely post and I usually ignore everyone on the platform. I'd prefer to delete it but until the rest of my immediate family do the same I might be stuck because they're stubborn and won't go out of their way to send/post/etc pictures anywhere else.

Yeah, it's the same way with me; it bugs them more than me but being stubborn back, as a previous reply stated, only alienates me from family I miss who have moved too far away to join them in those memories. I don't want to use facebook but if I want to keep in touch it's the only way it'll happen at present unfortunately.

First of all, let me try to clarify the threat. I think a lot of people are seriously confused here.
It isn't just the negative stuff that can be used against you, even though it is certain that no one is perfect and that you, too, have certainly made some embarrassing mistakes. Dare I say that most of us have made errors at the level of being blackmail-able? But enough on the negative side. It's also the positive stuff that can be used to manipulate and control you. What are your interests, who are your role models, even where are you strong? Your own strengths can be used in the best jujitsu style to lead you down the worst path.
Personal anecdote time: I now believe I was fooled by Facebook! Shocking! I think my idealism was exploited in 2016 as part of Putin's divide and conquer strategy to weaken the Democratic Party as it stumbled blindly towards the debacle. In hindsight it seems obvious now, but I've seen plenty of Hillary haters and Bernie brothers who have yet to realize how they were jerked around. Hey, it was the First World Cyberwar, and we barely had any idea that we were being attacked. (Now it's clear that war is over, and that America lost. Badly)

Seriously, I think it could be done. I'm not saying it would be trivial, but the basic principles of fixing Facebook are simple. We should know more about who we're talking to and what sort of reputation they have. I call it EPR (for Earned Public Reputation) and it's basically just sharing back with us some of the information that we're currently giving one-way to Facebook. Your EPR should basically be a reflection of public reactions to your public actions, but it needs to be fully symmetric.
How does this fix work? Mostly by making the low-reputation sources less visible. If the default visibility setting was even slightly positive, most of the garbage would be invisible, thus consuming none of our time at all.
(The private information should remain ABSOLUTELY private, which includes Facebook should not be allowed to collect it and use it against us, though that's a different (but related) problem.)
Enough time "invested" (AKA "wasted") this morning, but I'll probably invest some more if you're curious. Even constructive criticisms are welcome. (Advance warning: I'm just going to dismiss the usual rudeness and mindless rants as coming from trolls who feel the threat to their visibility.)

I never had an account at FB, but FB has trackers on many, if not a majority, of web sites and almost certainly knows nearly as much (or even more) as Google does. And that's despite using NoScript and various other tools - they can't stop everything. Yes, paranoid, but likely.

I've trimmed my FB account down to the bare basics. I don't have any photos nor videos uploaded, I generally don't write any posts on my wall, I don't participate in any games or quizzes, I don't get into any political discussions or discussions regarding stuff in the news, I also don't get my news from FB links.
All of my likes and group memberships are related to music, so either bands or venues or festivals, or groups specifically for discussing music. My primary use for FB is to have an accessible and structured way to keep track of events and invite friends to said events, and to keep track of updates from artists I like, that don't publish their own newsletters.
Everything I don't find relevant, I put on the block list. I run uBlock Origin, Privacy Badgers, Cookie Autodelete and First Party Isolation, and I have only given FB the very bare minimum permissions it needs to barely function.
FB can be a convenient time-saver and a handy tool, but you really need to put some clear limits in place to what it can and cannot do.

My employer required me to set up and maintain a FB account for work related crap but I never, ever used it for personal stuff. I never felt FB was a good communication tool. Pain in the ass to use. As a software professional, when FB first came out I thought it would ultimately prove to be a security nightmare so I stayed away.

1. I only follow my direct friends and family, the schools my kids go to, the museums we are members of, local community organizations, and stores/restaurants we like to go to
2. If anyone posts anything political I unfollow them
3. If anyone posts something nasty I block them
4. I only post pictures of the us and the kids, or links to cool things
5. Every once and a while I go through and tell Facebook I do not like ANY of their recommended links, news articles or users because they are not relevant to me.

I think there are a LOT of people (as in well over a majority) that would also not care to this extent.
As for myself, I hardly ever post. What I end up using Facebook more for anything is modern groups like Usenet used to be, only normal people can (mostly) use Facebook groups. Also it is nice to see what friends and family scattered around

1. Real. Which I use about once a year. So, my usage will stay the same.
2. Fake. Which I use when a site wants some sort of Fb relationship. Will continue to use. And, I don't really work in Piedmont at a winery, but, I would like to.
