Yep, I believe the first 128 unicode characters are identical to ASCII, and even most of the common so-called "extended ASCII" characters ended up somewhere in the unicode tables.

When I was younger, I would build powerful gaming machines that would put off lots of heat under the strain of trying to play the latest games at the highest settings. I think I had a 900w power supply at one point.

Have you guys done the math on what happens to your revenue stream if we stop allowing AC posts? I suppose I deserve that for the lack of clarity in my only suggested alternative (linking karma and moderation in both directions), but what do you mean? I've been using slashdot for many years, and I never was able to figure out ANY meaning of metamoderation. Maybe there were some explanatory statistics published someplace?

Just add a -1 Disagree mod. Instead of actually subtracting one from the post being moderated, it would delete all your remaining mod points and ensure you never get any more, and then take you to the reply form do you can learn how to disagree properly.

To clarify, I'm saying there should be a "trap" mod of "-1 Disagree". Whenever someone tries to abuse the moderation system by modding someone they disagree with down and selects this modifier, they will be redirected to post a reply instead. And maybe have all their mod points burned too. And maybe never get any more.

We got one free in the mail since we subscribe to the New York Times.
I played with the Samsung version in a Verizon store - obviously a lot more polished, but it isn't compatible with my S5, so it is kind of academic right now.
At the end of the day it comes down to content. There are a handful of neat things out there, but you can quickly exhaust the list and then what do you do? I am not into games very much, so those don't count.

Rift is better hardware, Vive is more fun experience. I own both. I would recomend the Vive today. That may change when Oculus Touch comes out though.

I am trialing Real Life right now. You have to give it to the developers: fantastic graphics. Best I've ever seen actually, by far. Other than the graphics though, it's a bit of a slog. You end up sitting in the same place ("office") for most of the time and there is no real story development. RL also has a driving simulator, which again has fantastic graphics, but it is not very challenging. You only need to find your way "home" and spend most of the time waiting for the other cars on the road to move so you can move as well. Once you are in the place called "home" it is actually not too bad, there is even a pretty girl there. But other than that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone used to the faster paced games with much worse graphics.
Other than the graphics being fantastic, the controls are confusing, the tutorial lasts around 18 years and even after that you've no idea what to do or how to win, most of the characters are dicks as well.

Last time I checked, fishing gear cost money. I mean you could find your own bait if you set up cricket traps or dug up your own worms, but lines, poles, tackle boxes usually cost money (unless you find someone throwing that stuff away on Freecycle or Craigslist)

100 percent agreed. VR cannot duplicate the experience of fishing out at the side of a riverbank on a warm summer's evening, listening to the sounds of nature, and the breeze blowing through the trees in live surround sound, breathing fresh air, and sipping an ice cold beer.

It went from the Rift to Cardboard to all of these VR headsets on the list. So far no one has anything "amazing" that I must have, and I have not seen the game content for any of these systems either.
I will be waiting for something to happen before I decide. Maybe Sony and Samsung bails, maybe Oculus (now Facebook owned) collects too much data and throws in Facebook Ads into my games (I'm stretching, but don't say you haven't thought of that).

If compared to the 3D graphics on consoles, i would say that Oculus is the Atari jaguar (pure hype but not exactly there), HTC vive is the 3DO (almost there, but still very, very expensive) and Playstation VR is the 32x or SuperFX chip (Expansion for an existing system, will most likely have the best games of the bunch, but its the worse specs wise).
So, if it repeats itself, we end getting up a 299 system that delivers a much better image quality and games than everything else using some truly innovative id

I'm happy to let the next generation of kids and young adults with huge amounts of disposable income do the beta testing.

exactly, The tech, processing power, resolution or FOV in every example has some limitations due to being early in the tech cycle and trying to make it affordable. Been burnt over the years too many times, happy to wait an extra couple of years and jump on the second or 3rd wave of this tech which should either have removed many of the limitations by then or else be a dead tech and in which case I saved $1000.

I can't say I disagree with your angle on this, but since I'm older my priorities have changed in regards to gaming and tech, perhaps I'm even verging on not being a nerd anymore. I imagine with enough disposable time and income, age is, arguably mostly irrelevant. The fun part is when I was younger, I had more time, but no money. Now I have the money, but no time.
That said I did pick up the DK2, when it was affordable ($350) and paired it with a midrange PC of the time and have been enjoying it. It was a shock to me when the consumer launch happened and everything got more expensive. I opeted out because I just don't have the time to spend to make that price tag worthwhile, and my DK2 is good enough for me for now anyway.

In my experience, gamepad has been the main input favored by the games. VR games are by and large not interested in making people use keyboard blind (many can't do it) and since real-look replaces mouse-look, the downsides of a gamepad are mitigated.
Yes, there's lot's of hype around using motion controls, but I think ultimately the lazy will mostly win out and gamepad will dominate. It's cool and novel to use your hands really, but I suspect that'll get old real fast, since there's plenty of opportunity t

What are you talking about, the basic UI is almost identical to real life, though the live-editing tools admittedly have a steep learning curve.

Well, the hand controllers, and the room-scale tracking. From everything I've seen that's going to be extremely important to unleashing the full potential of VR, and the Rift just doesn't have a large enough tracking volume to cut it.
I don't have any first-hand VR experience either, but I do own a Wii (or VR 0.1 as my friends and I called it), and the physical immersion from large-scale motion is extremely compelling, even when staring at the back of your avatar's head on a screen. I suspect being able to

I've been wanting to get into VR. But every platform has at least one seemingly-fatal problem right now:
Oculus: being evil with DRM, no motion controls yet
Gear: Underpowered, works only with certain phones
Vive: Weakest software support
PSVR: Not out yet, but likely to be underpowered (PS4 is well below Oculus/Vive req. specs, PS4NEO unknown), and likely to contain evil
Cardboard: Decent replacement for the View-Master but doesn't work for actual gaming
LG 360: Literally hadn't heard of it, which means the software is likely weak; also only works with certain phones
Vive has the easiest problems to overcome - just make more games for it. The SteamVR model seems like it could make VR cheap and standardized, which would make them the de facto PC VR platform. And I think I'd be happiest with Valve leading the VR industry.
PSVR has potential. They're going hard on the software side, and they have history of making good consumer hardware. I'm concerned about the horsepower - if they require VR games to be usable on the stock PS4, that's going to hamper game design, making my experience worse even if I get a NEO. And the NEO itself is an unknown.
Oculus has a head-start, and they're doing the best on average. Their software library is okay, their headset hardware is reportedly the best, and the motion controllers are coming soon. They're in a position where they could win. But they don't have enough of a lead for me to bet $700 that they'll win, and honestly? I don't want them to. I was willing to write off the concerns about Facebook buying them, but after that DRM stuff they decided to pull? I can no longer ignore them.

For now, while the hype is VR gaming, I find 360 video the most compelling part of VR. It's extremely, bizarrely immersive. For this purpose, cell-phone based systems like the Gear or even cardboard are great. They have obvious room for improvement, but the viewing technology is basically there already. Anyway, a Cardboard is like $5, so if you are interested enough to spend 10 minutes writing out your post on Slashdot, just go ahead and buy one.

I love that the VR are starting to take off, but this "1st" commercial generation isn't perfect yet. My major complain so far is that the field of vision isn't perfect yet, you still have the feeling to look through a window (you can see the end of the field at the side of your view). That also mean that you cannot move your eye to the left to move your field of vision. This mean that you move your head a lot more that it should be.

Well I don't really believe in phone VR, and I have some real doubts that console VR is going to be worth a single buck, but Oculus and Vive are both really great products, and it really delivers on VR. It looks good, it is interactive and there are some fun demos. It came from the dead because finally the technology is there. I tried building this stuff as a college student in the late 90s, there was just no good solution. Things were too heavy, or too low resolution, or too slow or unwieldy.

How so? The high-end gaming peripheral market has consistently shown there's a sustainable, if small, market even for far more expensive hardware that yields much smaller incremental improvements in gaming experience. And of course there's the abundant professional applications to ensure a sustainable market for relatively low-priced hardware, even if adoption for gaming purposes falters.

Because I fear that VR is largely going to follow the same business models as high-end video games or the likes of Facebook (requiring the use of the cloud, company-owned servers, and tracking). My pessimism is not that these models won't work from the point of view of the VR companies. It's that I think they will.
