The problem really is that the radio tech can not overlap. So if AT&T decides to switch to 5G, they will shut down the 3G network without even a second thought, and anyone using 7 year old phones still are told to buy a new one.
I guess that's a US thing... My current phone works fine. I see no reason to waste money on a new phone when my current one does everything I need. Or at least what I've figured out what to do with it.
And assuming I do need a new phone, I see no reason to waste £1000 on one when I can get very similar functionality for £150. Fashion is not a good reason.
Not at all clear where you get your premise from. I don't think an iPhone is just phone, but as I said - I can get very similar functionality for £150 instead of £1000.
Perhaps it's you who needs to look at the £150 phones and realise quite what a con the iPhone brand is?
I find the X the best performing and handling device i've had. I still like my Note 2 (especially with Cyanogenmod) and my Windows Mobile 1520 and 950xl, but the year with the X has been very productive. The phone just gets out of my way and lets me do work. I can't wait for a larger version, though. I miss my 1520's size.
I have a company issued iphone 7. What I find most annoying is the 2GB ram. I assumed the X you mentioned would have 4GB or more but looking at the specs it is only 3.. I constantly find the phone killing apps, swapping to disk.. whatever tricks apple does in the background. It creates a lot of lag when re-opening an app. You don't notice any of this? I just don't understand why they'd maintain so little physical memory on the device.
No, don't notice. I do typically kill apps - maybe used to having a 3g phone on Donut then Froyo with only 512MB. Even my Note II only had 16 GB, though that seemed masive, especially when I rooted it and installed Cyanogen.
The Iphone X seems fluid and runs great. If only I could sideload apps like on the Android and Windows phone.

Sounds like you're under the impression that you decide when it's time for a new phone? That's odd...
I thought it was Apple that decides when you need to have a new iPhone in your pocket. Apple releases new model, you buy. Got it?
We havenâ(TM)t actually successfully upgraded our President in several decades. All of the new ones weâ(TM)ve gotten have been defective and error prone.
My wife recently broke her SE - it smashed against a rock while she was climbing a mountain. We spent a little while considering different replacement options...and ended up buying another SE. I, too, will miss that option. But, hey, they'll be available on the secondary market, quite inexpensively, and will receive software updates for at least another few years.
Four inch phones? Looked on GearBest. Barely any choice. I just looked again, one is even "Refurbished iPhone 5S". There is exactly *one* 4" [gearbest.com] model that is 4G enabled (except for the fore mentioned refurb), and while it's extremely cheap it is extremely underpowered by any standards. I mean sure, it's Android, I'm obviously not going to spend top dollar (and neither would I have for iPhone... I'm an SE customer for crying out loud!), but a current-gen hardware 4" model for ~150€ - 300€ doesn't s
I assume 'released in 2017 or 2018' would qualify as 'current-gen', but without knowing where you are, and what bands are allowed there, I can't say if it supports 4G in your area.
Look, first off, I'm totally with you. I hate the trend toward larger and larger sizes. My favorite physical smartphone design of all time was the iPhone 4. I am currently an Xperia Z5 Compact user precisely *because* of the size *and* the fact that at the time of purchase it was the best compact-sized Android phone model.

I'll do my best. I plan to use my SE until support runs dry, and perhaps, just perhaps, someone saw that this is actually a market and there is more choice.
Otherwise Sony it is, even though I'm not really a big fan of Sony and their business tactics... *sigh*
Do you know what features ATT blocks when you 'bring your own' device (serious question). My whole family has BYOD and I'm unaware of any missing features that isn't allowed due to this fact. I have a OnePlus 6 (great phone), my wife is on a Nexus 5x, and my daughter is on a Moto G6. All of these were purchased various sources other than ATT, and ATT doesn't sell these models, and as far as I'm aware, everything works that each phone supports. Please fill me in if there is something I'm missing out on..
Similar great Samsung Galaxy S9 including my beloved headphone jack for half the price - don't even have to think about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?... [youtube.com]
I'm really just trying to predict a future outcome here. I have a 256GB iPhone X and it's a perfectly good phone. Also still making monthly payments on it through my T-Mobile contract.
The one thing I really like about the Xs, though, is that ability to adjust depth of field on the fly after taking a picture. That's something I spent a lot of money on a Lytro camera, a few years ago, to be able to do. And it's pretty cool thinking my iPhone I always carry with me already could do that now, too.
...I was really hoping for an iPhone SE2, but instead just ordered a Nokia 6.1 to replace my iPhone SE.
Seriously, WTF? Why is the least expensive new phone $750 with no headphone jack?!?!
Yeah, I'm waiting for much the same reason. Eventually, Apple will move their cell phones to USB-C, and then I'll be able to have a single set of headphones that works on both my Mac and cell phone. Until then, I'll stick with my iPhone 6s.
...I just ordered an androidone device with a headphone jack for less than $250 (Nokia 6.1). Which sucks, because what I really wanted was an iPhone SE2.
I've never knowingly bought anything from Apple because it's always overpriced. Not only that, they do everything they can to make it impossible for third-party techs to work on them and I dislike the idea of being locked into a walled garden like that. After all these decades of ignoring Apple, why should I start buying their products now?
* No, cannot afford one * No, I don't like walled gardens * No, iOS sucks * No, there are comparable Android phones which cost half as much (e.g. Xiaomi Mi8 or OnePlus 6)
I bought an iPhone X at launch, and while the new phones also look nice, I really like the size of the X compared to the Plus I had previously... you get nearly as much screen vertically as with an older plus.
That Max model does look really impressive screen-wise though. But my next phone probably will stay minimized instead of maximized.
I want a phone with a 4.5" screen (5" is theabsolute maximum), multiple day battery life, a proper headphone jack, good performance (sadly that probably means at least 3GB RAM) and an OS free from OEM bloatware.
I don't care about wireless charging, fingerprint/face recognition nonsense, "digital assistants" or any of that bullshit.
It really is strange, isn't it? Basic features are being removed and replaced with nearly useless crap that requires dedicated specialized hardware which in turns increases the price of the phone.
I do not wish to support Apple lawyers. Apple has a track record of combating innovation from competitors with their lawyers. I support iThings at work as well as Android and Microsoft stuff. My work phone is a 5C but they are not getting any of my money.
I was excited to get an iPhone XR until I discovered the screen resolution is 720p. WTF? It's ridiculous that Apple is putting an outdated display like this into a phone in 2018 - it's hard to see this an anything other than a deliberate hobbling of this model in order to differentiate the more expensive XS models.
I could wait another year to see if Apple have a decent sub-$1000 phone next time around, but seeing as I need a phone now it's gonna be Galaxy S9 for me.
If 13% of the geeks buy Apple's new phones, then the next quarter's profits are going to be spectacular, even more so if 13% of iPhone owners at large upgrade. Cha-ching!
... obscenely expensive in regards to Smartphones. Xiaomi, OnePlus, the new Nokia and others have phones that play in the same league and cost a third. You know where those 200+$ revenue per phone come in.
I have an iPhone 7 thru work but hate it, the iPhone gets thrown in the drawer after work as I prefer Android. Currently using Xiaomi Mi Max 2 and much prefer it.
...kudos to Jobs & company, they deserve the credit. The current Apple? Haven't seen anything new. Just sucking in money by "updating" the same ol' stuff.
Buying an Iphone instead of Android is like buying a Honda instead of a Mazda or Toyota: the only reason is to have the same kind as your neighbor, so you can be in the same club of lavishly wasting your money for no reason. Since I got my first blueberry and then my 3G android phone, I've loved the productivity gains with smartphones. I would spend hours, though, flashing a custom ROM on my devices like the Note 2, HTC devices or S5. By the time Jellybean came out, however, I realized I was done with Android and jumped to Windows Phone. Loved it. Hated the lack of apps. Then they took it away.
