Beautiful form? It's an expensive low powered computer in the form of a rectangle made of plastic, metal and glass. I've put a case/cover on every phone I've ever owned so they don't break when I drop them.

Depends on the time. Most things do. When I started playing with computers, they were strictly boys' toys. Hard to remember all the details after so long, but I'd estimate it was at least 10 years after I started before I actually met a female programmer. These days, not so much. All the kids have smartphones, don't they?
And I still think my suggestion would be a vastly better poll and discussion topic than this one.

I use a clunky phone case on the nifty iPhone 6s my daughter foisted on me because she was sick of seeing me use an old G2X

I replaced the battery on my 5yo Xperia Z3 for $75. Where do you take your phones that they charge $350+ just to replace the battery? (Mine didn't have a removable battery, the phone was sealed)

The inexpensive phone that I noticed was a little over $100, but I don't have the firm figures for my current phone. It was bundled with my phone contract and I think its street value was over $200.
The raw battery for a previous phone was somewhere over $30, but that was a replaceable battery. Unfortunately, by the time the battery was worn out and I wanted to replace it, the battery was no longer available. Apparently at any price

Why would your phone safely in your pocket (or pocketbook) suffer any damage when you get rear-ended at a light? When that happened to me recently, my phone was just fine.

I haven't used a case until the work iphone 6 and now Note 9. They're both just so slippery that it didnt' take long until just slid onto ground from a briefcase pocket or off a bench. I didn't want to expalin to my boss why I needed another $1000 phone so I just bit the bullet and got the case. The flip caseon the Note in particular makes it huge, but it does have a slot for a card and acts as a stand in a pinch. I wish they'd just made them out of reinforced PA6^ or something reasonable and not glass/alum

I bought a case with the phone, a note 3 and the case with the phone in it, makes a tight fit for shirt pockets and I can bend over and the phone in the case will remain tightly ensconced in my shirt pocket. Not a smooth case but a fake leather case with a front cover to protect the screen. So phone in case in shirt pocket, way more comfortable than back pants pocket or trying to jam it into front pants pocket. Very few shirts have a pocket that is too small, so yeah, put case on phone to help it stick in

Because rugged phones suck. Two years outdated and flagship price. A normal phone with a cheap case is much better and strong enough for most people.

Every time I held $500 in cash in my hand, or set it down somewhere I was never so negligent to let the wind blow it away, let somebody tear it from my hands, or leave it somewhere unattended. My phone is no different. You are correct; it is a $500 asset. However, it is a $500 asset that I grip tight, I keep protected, I don't leave it unattended, and so on. I haven't dropped, lost, broke, or a damaged a mobile phone period.

I completely agree. That's why I don't buy a case that inflates the size of the phone making it more difficult (time consuming) to put in and out of pockets. That's why I don't buy a case with screen protector included that degrades the UX and requires repetitive swipes/taps (time consuming) to recognize user input. That's why I don't buy a case that makes includes a ridiculous USB cover/flap which requires you to lift/remove (more time consuming) to plug in.
All of these actions are only 1-2 second incon

Same here. In addition, I'm not some fucking numskull who can't go 10 seconds without playing with his phone. Just today I missed the elevators closing at work, and hit the call button 5 seconds later. The doors opened back up, and some dumbfuck was leaning against the wall in there, dicking around on his phone. He walks out, looks around, and then walks back on. The fucker was so engrossed in his phone he forgot to press a floor button, and thought he had gotten to his floor, despite the elevator not movin

Oh, simple. I value being able to easily slide the phone in and out of my pants pocket. A case makes it harder to do that. I could get a thin case but then it's not doing much useful so what's the point?
I also value light weight. And I run with my phone and don't want to swap between a case and an armband. So net-net, I'd prefer to be careful with my Faberge egg.
(Full disclosure: after having three smartphones over ten years, I finally cracked my first screen. Dang. I'm going to see how long I can stand it

I could make the argument that the majority of the car is a case to protect the delicate operator equipment that is you, at high speeds in dubiously controlled environments.
Of course the # of people dead, maimed or injured in motorcycle accidents continues to justify wearing that big coat of armor.

Two reasons
1. So it can fit easily in my pocket.
2. I have never bought a $500+ phone. A Moto G is less than $200, and can run any apps the pricier phones can run. So it doesn't have a clear beveled edge or a notch. So what? It does the job just fine.

I use cases for either utility (wallet cases, cases with a "kickstand" for setting on the table watching videos,) or style. I gave up on "protective" cases long ago.

I have been more "lucky". My cycle is:
1. Buy new phone without case
2. Drop it, but it miraculously survive, but with a single nasty stratch
3. Hurry out and buy a case.
So always a phone in a case with a single big stratch on it, it wouldn't have it, if the case was always there.

The screen on my work phone didn't survive its second fall out of my shirt pocket onto a concrete floor. After replacing the screen, I now have a bright pink phone case on that phone.

I've got an old candy bar Samsung non-smart phone, it's been dropped, and even thrown against walls... just pick up the parts, put the battery back in, and you're good to go.
I do miss flip phones, though.

Non-smart phones are only good at voice calls and suck at sending text or using apps. And voice calls are like the one thing you don't want to happen in your day. It's a tedious interruption that provides no satisfaction. R.I.P. flip phones, we hardly knew thee.

Are there really people on slashdot that use a phone for making calls? I only do that while driving, or when connecting to the"old economy", like my electrician or plumber. It's email or messaging for everyone else. Even my partner hardly ever answers her phone during the day. Unnecessary interruption, and we don't like to discuss private things when people can listen.

I used to use a hard clear case on my Treo 650 and in the early days of using my N900, but these days I don't do one unless I'm doing something outdoorsy where the phone is more likely to be damaged. I've never owned super-thin phones so the extra bulk of a case is really inconvenient.

There's little point in cases these days... phones have grown large enough that a bit of rubberized cushion around a 5+ inch screen isn't going to do much in a real drop from any height except protect the corners without absorbing sufficient impact to actually protect the screen from scratching or cracking. Shorter falls don't damage modern screens. I'd rather just replace it yearly than deal with a case adding a lot of unnecessary bulk and very little extra protection.

This is pretty much exactly what I do. I’ve been through several iterations of wallet designs; but the one I now use has lasted 2.5 years so far - and I like it because it doesn’t interfere with the phone’s function and also holds multiple cards.

Exactly this. A cheap $20 case to protect a $500 phone. Also, with a cheap case, you can easily replace it anytime it gets scratched.
My current case currently has a bunch of scratches on it but for $20 it will look like new again. Without a case, instead of replacing
the case, I would have to replace the entire phone to fix scratches. My son's last phone, he broke his screen protector probably once

I have a Moto X (4). The thing was so damned slippery that it was sliding all over desks and tables. And out of my hands. So I put on a cheap-ass silicon case that was on clearance at Best Buy for $5. Originally it was clear, but now it's slightly yellowed. Remember, cheap. It might add a whole 16th of an inch to the phone thickness, and it doesn't slide. I'm also using a Cat S-41 [catphones.com] that despite not having a case, pretty much has a case. This thing is a solid chunk of rubberized phone that can get submerged in water just fine. No case, but unlike most other phones doesn't need one.
Had one on my previous phones....
For general use I highly recommend the phone, incredible battery life and it can take some abuse. If you intend to takes pictures, well, you probably want something else.

I got my 1st cell phone in '98 or '99 and have yet to break one, not even a cracked screen. I've had a few drops over the years but all that may have resulted was a small scuff.
I also never get the latest model, so when I upgrade my phone very 3 or 4 years, I'm only paying $100-$200 for the new one.

My previous phone I did not use a case. I liked not having a grippy/bulky case to catch on things, which I felt was more dangerous than no case. I never dropped it or broke it in 4 years. But I did have an issue with it because it didn't have a case. Once when pulling it out of my pocket a thread caught the edge of the power button and pulled it out! I ended up losing it, but was able to scavenge the power button off of my wife's phone (same model) that was broken. It happened again with that one, but

I make my own phone cases, you insensitive clod! I've dropped my phone in parking lots multiple times. I can't say my case saved the phone, but it still works fine and is unscratched. If you have a 3D printer, it is a fun and educational project to design a case from scratch.
