For the longest time, I was a holdout. I dropped one phone way back in the Android Cupcake days - the 2nd day I had it. Ouch. But I vowed to be more careful.
Fast fordward and now I use the most minimal of cases, mostly because the phones are so slippery that it's hard to hold on to them now. One phone (Nokia 7.1) I nearly dropped taking it out of the package because it was so slick!
It's sad to ruin the beautiful form of some of these phones with a case! It's balance of money and beauty.
Beautiful form? It's an expensive low powered computer in the form of a rectangle made of plastic, metal and glass. I've put a case/cover on every phone I've ever owned so they don't break when I drop them.
I even put a case on my work phone. (At my own expense.) It was worth the minor expense for the peace of mind of knowing that if I dropped it I have a better chance of it not breaking. Also the case makes it easier to hold onto.

I replaced the battery on my 5yo Xperia Z3 for $75. Where do you take your phones that they charge $350+ just to replace the battery? (Mine didn't have a removable battery, the phone was sealed)
I would not buy a $700 phone. I am guessing that's how you got to $350 there.
The inexpensive phone that I noticed was a little over $100, but I don't have the firm figures for my current phone. It was bundled with my phone contract and I think its street value was over $200.
The raw battery for a previous phone was somewhere over $30, but that was a replaceable battery. Unfortunately, by the time the battery was worn out and I wanted to replace it, the battery was no longer available. Apparently at any price
I've never had a case on any of my cell phones. I've also never damaged one by dropping either. All of my other family members do have a case for their phone.
Never dropped mine either... twice I've had it sitting on a desk, and someone else has knocked it off. *You* may be careful as heck, but you can't do anything when you're the second car in line and someone rear-ends you at a red light. I do have a case.:)
Why would your phone safely in your pocket (or pocketbook) suffer any damage when you get rear-ended at a light? When that happened to me recently, my phone was just fine.
I haven't used a case until the work iphone 6 and now Note 9. They're both just so slippery that it didnt' take long until just slid onto ground from a briefcase pocket or off a bench. I didn't want to expalin to my boss why I needed another $1000 phone so I just bit the bullet and got the case. The flip caseon the Note in particular makes it huge, but it does have a slot for a card and acts as a stand in a pinch. I wish they'd just made them out of reinforced PA6^ or something reasonable and not glass/alum
Why would anyone in their right mind carry around what amounts to a $500+ Faberge egg on them without some means of protecting it from the surrounding environment? For those unconcerned about replacement cost, there is at least the inconvenience of the phone being rendered temporarily inaccessible due to a shattered digitizer or screen. For me, the texturing on iPhones in particular develops extremely low friction with my skin, and they will spontaneously break grip due to slight accelerations of e.g. a bum
I bought a case with the phone, a note 3 and the case with the phone in it, makes a tight fit for shirt pockets and I can bend over and the phone in the case will remain tightly ensconced in my shirt pocket. Not a smooth case but a fake leather case with a front cover to protect the screen. So phone in case in shirt pocket, way more comfortable than back pants pocket or trying to jam it into front pants pocket. Very few shirts have a pocket that is too small, so yeah, put case on phone to help it stick in
Why would anyone buy a phone as fragile as a Faberge egg? Why would anyone make a phone that requires a case?
A ruggedized phone is far better than a fragile phone with a case. Alas, few agree with me and ruggedized phones are becoming harder to come by.
Why would anyone in their right mind carry around what amounts to a $500+ Faberge egg on them without some means of protecting it from the surrounding environment?
Why would anyone in their right mind carry around what amounts to a $500+ Faberge egg on them without some means of protecting it from the surrounding environment?
Every time I held $500 in cash in my hand, or set it down somewhere I was never so negligent to let the wind blow it away, let somebody tear it from my hands, or leave it somewhere unattended. My phone is no different. You are correct; it is a $500 asset. However, it is a $500 asset that I grip tight, I keep protected, I don't leave it unattended, and so on. I haven't dropped, lost, broke, or a damaged a mobile phone period.

I like to buy unlocked iPhones a few models back, always less than $200. Which is the reason I do not have to put up with a case. I made my kid get a phone case though.
Why would anyone in their right mind carry around what amounts to a $500+ Faberge egg on them without some means of protecting it from the surrounding environment?
Oh, simple. I value being able to easily slide the phone in and out of my pants pocket. A case makes it harder to do that. I could get a thin case but then it's not doing much useful so what's the point?
I also value light weight. And I run with my phone and don't want to swap between a case and an armband. So net-net, I'd prefer to be careful with my Faberge egg.
(Full disclosure: after having three smartphones over ten years, I finally cracked my first screen. Dang. I'm going to see how long I can stand it

I use cases for either utility (wallet cases, cases with a "kickstand" for setting on the table watching videos,) or style. I gave up on "protective" cases long ago.
I switch cases either when I need the utility, or when the mood suits me. None of my cases (other than a battery case, and I don't even have one for my current phone) cost over $15. So I have multiple. For my current phone, I have five cases. A leather, a wood (just the backplate, the "mounting" part of the case is rubber/plastic,) two differe
The past 20 years were like this: 1. I get a new phone without a case 2. After 3 months I drop and break it 3. I get a new phone with a case 4. After a three or four years it dies from old age and the cycle repeats.
Ah that pregnant moment when time slows to a crawl, the phone slips from your hand, and you watch it in slo-mo headed for that concrete sidewalk. One of those was enough for me. Since then I use an OtterBox and it has yet to let me down.
The screen on my work phone didn't survive its second fall out of my shirt pocket onto a concrete floor. After replacing the screen, I now have a bright pink phone case on that phone.
I've got an old candy bar Samsung non-smart phone, it's been dropped, and even thrown against walls... just pick up the parts, put the battery back in, and you're good to go.
Non-smart phones are only good at voice calls and suck at sending text or using apps. And voice calls are like the one thing you don't want to happen in your day. It's a tedious interruption that provides no satisfaction. R.I.P. flip phones, we hardly knew thee.
Are there really people on slashdot that use a phone for making calls? I only do that while driving, or when connecting to the"old economy", like my electrician or plumber. It's email or messaging for everyone else. Even my partner hardly ever answers her phone during the day. Unnecessary interruption, and we don't like to discuss private things when people can listen.
I used to use a hard clear case on my Treo 650 and in the early days of using my N900, but these days I don't do one unless I'm doing something outdoorsy where the phone is more likely to be damaged. I've never owned super-thin phones so the extra bulk of a case is really inconvenient.
There's little point in cases these days... phones have grown large enough that a bit of rubberized cushion around a 5+ inch screen isn't going to do much in a real drop from any height except protect the corners without absorbing sufficient impact to actually protect the screen from scratching or cracking. Shorter falls don't damage modern screens. I'd rather just replace it yearly than deal with a case adding a lot of unnecessary bulk and very little extra protection.
Phone case wallets make perfect sense to me. Have a phone case that can carry few cards like three in my case. One driver license and two credit cards. I can swap the second credit card with something like a library card or a national parks pass depending on my plans for the day. I even manage to keep a half folded $50 bill between the phone and the case as a emergency cash. For days where I need some physical cash like some ethnic restaurants who only accept cash.
This is pretty much exactly what I do. I’ve been through several iterations of wallet designs; but the one I now use has lasted 2.5 years so far - and I like it because it doesn’t interfere with the phone’s function and also holds multiple cards.
This is what I use. Magnetic opening for three card slot doubles as a stand for your phone. Case even features a storage for a extra sim card and sim card removal tool.

Haven't bothered because I can't walk into a store to get a case for it. I can order one online (only one choice), but because I can't touch/feel it, I don't know if I'm wasting my money or not.
I have a great idea. If everyone puts his phone into plastic, just make the back cover out of plastic! Or fake leather. It will also make it thinner, because there is no extra layer. Am I a genius or what.
I've been through a succession of cases from all the top rated manufacturers. It wasn't until I spent real money on a SCF carbon fiber case for my Galaxy S10+ that I discovered what a real phone case is
Historically I have. I recently moved to a (Really Nice) Pixel3A, and I actually have the case sitting on a table. But it makes it so much thicker I have not put it on yet.
D roped it trying to keep it dry the other day. It cracked the screen, and as I saw if float downstream on top of the water, i was thinking it would not survive. It di dthough. Impressive as it is not rated as weatherproof at all.
I work in harsh environments and I'm extremely tough on equipment anyways. The last phone I had that didn't have a cover on it lasted 2 days, I replaced the screen myself and broke it the same day. Have had cases on ever since.
Phone was an iPhone 6 i broke that fast.
Exactly this. A cheap $20 case to protect a $500 phone. Also, with a cheap case, you can easily replace it anytime it gets scratched. My current case currently has a bunch of scratches on it but for $20 it will look like new again. Without a case, instead of replacing the case, I would have to replace the entire phone to fix scratches. My son's last phone, he broke his screen protector probably once a month but never broke his actual screen. At $1 for a new glass screen protector versus $50+ for a new scr
I have a Moto X (4). The thing was so damned slippery that it was sliding all over desks and tables. And out of my hands. So I put on a cheap-ass silicon case that was on clearance at Best Buy for $5. Originally it was clear, but now it's slightly yellowed. Remember, cheap. It might add a whole 16th of an inch to the phone thickness, and it doesn't slide. The only phone I've ever rendered unusable, either with or without a case, was a phone about 10 years ago that I slammed in a car door. Surprisingly that
- Worst case I drop it and my mom makes me get it repaired with a new display. - But sometimes they just trade out the whole phone with a new one instead of repair. - Best case I drop it harder and my mom buys me a new phone.
The only time I put a case on a phone was for a Motorola I had a couple of phones ago. The plastic was so smooth it hardly stayed put on my desk. Otherwise, I just take care of my phone.
First two phones were Nokia...used them until they became obsolete. Now carry an iphone for work, and a Samsung Galaxy for private use. Yet to drop/smash a cellphone. Everyone else in my family has a case, and they each have dropped/broken at leasst 1 cellphone (yes...with cases. LOL)
I like to keep my phone in my pants pocket. With a case, it would be too hard to slide it in and out, and it would be too thick. I have yet to seriously damage my phone by dropping it, so I'm not in any hurry to get a case.
I'm also using a Cat S-41 [catphones.com] that despite not having a case, pretty much has a case. This thing is a solid chunk of rubberized phone that can get submerged in water just fine. No case, but unlike most other phones doesn't need one.
Had one on my previous phones....
For general use I highly recommend the phone, incredible battery life and it can take some abuse. If you intend to takes pictures, well, you probably want something else.
The top of the line smart phones are remarkable objects of elegance in design. They are also sleeker so that they can fit in your pocket. For me, the phone case turns a beautiful product of industrial design into a truly ugly object. It also makes the phone too large to fit in my pocket. At 49, I'm starting to fill my pants more, and I hate the thought of paying $30 or more to make this beautiful practical object ugly and impractical.
My 2-year-old, $1200 iPhone X has a few scratches on it, but it's still
I have a Samsung S7 - I found it difficult to hold with a light grip due to the slippery finish. I bought a very cheap case simply for better grip.
I got my 1st cell phone in '98 or '99 and have yet to break one, not even a cracked screen. I've had a few drops over the years but all that may have resulted was a small scuff.
I also never get the latest model, so when I upgrade my phone very 3 or 4 years, I'm only paying $100-$200 for the new one.
My previous phone I did not use a case. I liked not having a grippy/bulky case to catch on things, which I felt was more dangerous than no case. I never dropped it or broke it in 4 years. But I did have an issue with it because it didn't have a case. Once when pulling it out of my pocket a thread caught the edge of the power button and pulled it out! I ended up losing it, but was able to scavenge the power button off of my wife's phone (same model) that was broken. It happened again with that one, but
I make my own phone cases, you insensitive clod! I've dropped my phone in parking lots multiple times. I can't say my case saved the phone, but it still works fine and is unscratched. If you have a 3D printer, it is a fun and educational project to design a case from scratch.
Any case 5hat actually provides sufficient protection is too bulky. I use a tempored Glass screen protector and a skin from either dbrand or slick wraps. That and I stick to mid-range phones, currently the pixel 3a. Perfect phone perfect price.

Shorter falls don't damage modern screens. I'd rather just replace it yearly than deal with a case adding a lot of unnecessary bulk and very little extra protection.
