  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

The logos are all available at http://slashdot.org/logo15.pl [slashdot.org].
      • by antdude (79039)

Thank you. I missed a few and now can vote the best one! :)

      • I was happy to get into the additional ones also, but I think it can use some explanation. It is the second form the bottom on a black background (Avrum Cohen).
It is 15 years of planetary motion, with the % of orbit and size of planets to scale. The distances of the orbits are definitely not to scale. I sent it to a couple of friends and they did not get it. They referred to it as "bubbles"

      • Thanks. This poll really is, as the saying goes, "worthless without pics".
      • Thank You. Note that I still can't find "Avrum Cohen's robot bugs".

        • by rb12345 (1170423)
They're the animated entry for the 10th of October. The "bugs" appear as white circles moving randomly, and when they collide with the centre of a letter stroke (or a stopped bot) within the letter outlines, they stop.
          • by rb12345 (1170423)
Replying to myself, the date each logo was posted is the number to the left of the logo. If you just want to see the robot bugs, the image is at http://a.fsdn.com/sd/logo15_jacsba8.gif [fsdn.com].

Okay, I see now. When I first viewed it, the animation for that one was broken for some reason (on my box), so I only saw the finished product. Now that it works, the description makes sense. Mystery solved. Thanks.

I would have voted for eldavojohn's tessellation but it ain't listed, it's Bebb's Saturn for me. I can't believe that pacman who eats non-blue ghosts is winning; that's disgraceful.
    • I rather liked the Pac-Man tribute logo. Even if you don't, I'm not sure why you think it being (at one time) in the lead is "disgraceful". It seems like a very silly thing to get worked up over.

I think disgraceful part was about the fact that pacman is eating non-blue ghosts. In the game, you could only eat ghosts once you picked up the "pill" that made them go blue and run away from you, or otherwise, they would eat you!

    • I voted for other as eldavojohn's was my favorite of them also.
    • I really liked the tessellation one but it doesn't fit with the background color as well as a borderless logo does. Thus, I chose my second favorite logo which was one that blended in with the background color and would make more sense with their site design.

I would have voted for eldavojohn's tessellation but it ain't listed, it's Bebb's Saturn for me.

Thanks Fast Thick Pants! Kind words on Slashdot are rarer than a Nexus 7 tablet so I'll take them over the device :-) I really did only spend a half hour on it so I would feel guilty if it went up against some of these logos that obviously took a lot more time. My vote went for Avrum Cohen's robot bugs, though. I used to write software for multi-agent systems in graduate school and I felt like this one was a great marriage of form and function -- on top of that it was one of the most tasteful gifs to me.

When I was a kid I used to make tessellations non-stop of anything and everything. All you needed was graph paper.

One of my ideas that never worked out was to do a Back to the Future gif since that movie takes place in October but the number of pixels just wasn't enough to make meaningful digits on the display or do a DeLorian or anything. So I went this route instead. Also, I agree with other posters that my logo didn't quite mesh well with the background. What I would have preferred to do was complete like a 4x3 block of the logos (which would have made like a postage stamp size) and put a slightly thicker black border around that ... but again, the pixel limit! Still a fun thing to do! Glad you enjoyed my logo!

      • >Kind words on Slashdot are rarer than a Nexus 7 tablet so I'll take them over the device...

Bah! I only entered for the tablet :-)

I take comfort in knowing that mine was too complex for the unwashed masses of /. to understand, and hence it didn't make the final multiple choice cut... :P

I have to agree. I like original a lot better than any of the submissions. One could have been better with a little work (Samitra Kale's) but the animation sequencing ruined it for me and it needed a little polishing.

That said I really love the nature of eldavojohn's and the colour choices are excellent and it worked well - but not as a logo. It was also clearly the work of a brilliant and sick mind which is probably why I love it so much. Toned down it would make a great background. Or the brown turned into a large Slashdot it would make a great logo. As it stands though it just doesn't work as a logo no matter how much I love it.

My vote has to go with the existing logo.

Maybe someday the poll interface will get a revamp. (I can think of some ways to improve it!) For right now, though, there actually is a hard-coded limit of 8 options, hence 7 named picks plus wild-card option :)

  • We are to choose the best logo, but according to what criterion? Should it be the one that surprised or amused me the most? The one that represents Slashdot the better? The one most likely to increase slashdot audience? The fastest to load?

Yep. I chose the memory test, because it brought back fond memories of trying to get that extra 3kB of base RAM so Wing Commander would run with speech enabled. I did have computers before that (TRS-80 and C64) but that logo stuck out the most for me.

Pong was my second choice. It'd be more interesting for everyone to pick their top three in the poll and see how that changes the results.

Long-lost-twin brother, is that you?? That was exactly the same thing I was thinking of when I saw that logo. Aaah yes... getting those last few kBs somehow to hear those terrible, but terribly cool, Wing Commander voices.

While some of the logos are great artist creations, they were mostly, or totally I can't remember exactly, animated. Web page logos shouldn't be animated. Anything animated calls or attention to it and distracts us from the rest of the page. If the purpose of a web page is to show off animated icons, then by all means, proceed. But if the purpose of a website is to provide content to the user the best thing you can do is banish all animation.

  • I hate animated gifs so much I turned them off in my browser. Most of the animated logos are just blank or near-blank to me.

I like Jack Thomson's one best.

  • I had to vote for 4 and 18 (the elfish script). Both have meaning. I do love the saturn and sputnik after that.

  • Sean Murphy's from Oct. 31st gets my vote.

Are you really going to choose from one of those logos? They are interesting as a contest to see who creates the nerdiest animated gif, but none of them work as a serious logo.

  • Loved eldavojohn's logo from the 21st. Very strongly hated all animated logos after the 10th iteration through the loop.

  • I liked the "tessellation" by eldavojohn - Oct21. That looks cool. ...and the "memory test" second.

  • If you must have a pong, Heiko Selber's honourable mention beats Piotr Dabrowski's hands down, in my opinion -- yours is pretty classy Piotr but I prefer the full field, myself (same reason I detest tablet-ized interfaces).

But I don't think the logo should go crazy on sideways references; hence I cannot vote for any of the other "presented" options. My top 6 are, therefore, #1, #7 and #9 from the accepted list, and Pocholo Peralta's, Erik Berglund's and Pete Mendoza's honourable mention entries.

I admit I liked Jack Thompson's S/ashd.t idea. It would be even better not capitalized as s/ashd.t.

The logos in the poll are awfull.

  • Where can a person look to view the images? Text descriptions with dates do not help me decide.
  • Those animated logos were bloody annoying. They are the modern day equivalent of Blinking Text.
I hope they are never incorporated into the page, regardless of how clever each of them was.

In Other News: Get off my lawn, you pesky kids.

  • None of these are good logos. Almost all of them are good tributes. I vote for either the pre-October logo or a new, good, logo.

I mean no offense to any of the contributors - I like almost all of them a lot, but I don't think they make good permanent logos.

    • The logos from the contest were only for displaying in October. The person with the best logo is winning a Nexus 7, not replacing the permanent logo.
  • Rub your pillock against another bloke's arse, and toss him off at the same time.
  • I like the Pacman one from Barbara Selber, but I find it a little irritating that Pacman is munching normal coloured ghosts without suffering any ill effects.

Normally Pacman can only munch them when they've turned blue after he's eaten a power pill :)
