Brazil's Top Court Says X Paid Pending Fines to Wrong Bank (reuters.com) 83

An anonymous reader shared this report from Reuters: Brazil's Supreme Court said on Friday that lawyers representing social media platform X did not pay pending fines to the proper bank, postponing its decision on whether to allow the tech firm to resume services in Brazil.

The payment of the fines, which X lawyers argued that the company had paid correctly, is the only outstanding measure demanded by the court in order to authorize X to operate again in Brazil... Earlier on Friday, X, owned by billionaire Elon Musk, filed a fresh request to have its services restored in Brazil, saying it had paid all pending fines. In response to the request, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes requested the payment to be transferred to the right bank. He also determined that once fines are sorted out, Brazil's prosecutor general will give his opinion on the recent requests made by X's legal team in Brazil, which has been seeking to have the platform restored in the country.

Following Moraes' decision on Friday, X lawyers again asked the court for authorization to resume operations in Brazil, denying that the company had paid the fines to the wrong account and saying they do not see the need for the prosecutor general to be consulted before the ban is lifted.

      Uh-huh... Accident.

Sure it was "accidentally" sent to the wrong account... It's not Musk trying one last trick to thumb his nose at the law.

A guy with an Indian accent phoned me and gave me each and everything you need to know. It's a bank that holds your money safely out of the way of scammers and the Brazillian Government until you need it, and it doesn't cost you a penny. Tranactions are done via gift vouchers. If Musk would like to contact me I will give him the details in case he forgot to write them down.

His name is Prince Adewale Johnson of Nigeria. He sent me an email stating that he very recently came into a considerable amount of money and needed someone to cash the check on his behalf. This must be Musk's money.

Misinformation is just an excuse for censorship.

        • No, misinformation is stating factually incorrect things as if they are true. It's a fancy word for lying. The big question is what we can do about this. Ignoring it doesn't work; point out doesn't work; censoring it doesn't work. Mocking it sometimes works.
          • by guruevi ( 827432 )

So why can't you just say they are lying, you don't need a fancy word. Because lying is constitutionally protected as free speech. The only solution is more free speech, not less.

            • In some ways lying is better. One person choosing to misrepresent something can be corrected and held accountable. Misinformation is more insidious; people pass that along believing it to be true, but it isn't. You can't just shame them, you have to educate them.
              • by guruevi ( 827432 )

Yes, educate them, censoring them just pushes it underground and doesn't resolve anything.

Are you sure you want to be celebrating this quite so much? These developments are not a good thing for anyone who prefers democracy. I get that you don't like Elon Musk (for which there are many good reasons), but that's not some sort of democratic awakening that's good for the citizens of Brazil, either.

So what is your solution - world war 3 to foce universal free speech? First thin is you need to determine if Space Karen's version of free speech is actually free speech. Wh8ile he brags about bveing an absolutist, his actions show otherwise.

The far right version of free speech is being allowed to scream out that you are allowed to say anything from lible, to outright falsehoods and perjury, but other people do not have the right to react to it. That isn't free speech at all. And WW3 to enforce the Repu

The irony is, and St Elnor is clearly not a student of history (decades past or recent Trump), dictators generally screw over the people who helped them into power, Stalin and Trotsky, Hitler and Rohm... List is endless and never ends well for the useful idiot. If Trump ever gets near power again, there will be an American night of the long knives.

I would concur. There are followers that believe they can bend him to their will or even control him. Assuming that he does what he says he is going to do, they will eventually end up on the wrong side of whatever thoughts pass his mind.
