My "Other" vote was more along the lines of "It depends" and "I don't want to admit how much I use the google". I'm a bit surprised to hear that Metacrawler might still exist, and I think "Ask Jeeves" is probably an attempted joke. I heard it was bought out some years ago, but I don't care enough to check...

I use DDG (esp. as default on iPhone) which uses a number of search engines (bing, google, etc), but if I want to search google, I just append a "!s" to my search - sends me to startpage.com, which just uses Google, but completely anonymized.

I usually use DDG, even for technical things.
It's just the default in Safari now (for me).
Results aren't terribly different. It's just when your query has more local references than Google will find "better" results.

Yup, exactly this. DuckDuckGo first; and if I don't see what I want I just add a "!G" - although that doesn't happen very often anymore.
I must say that Google's results almost always match the Duck's... if DDG returns an unhelpful result, Google generally does as well.

Which search engines do you use is a better topic.
I use multiple ones and the way the question is written the least used is a valid answer.
I replied only because we are seeing many political polls and it is super simple to craft a poll that
elicits anonymous answers that then can be published with clickbait headlines. Be critical if
a poll summary does not contain an exact accounting of the questions. Beware that presentation
and the last mile of connectivity come to play.

DDG when it's something I don't want tied to me personally (not necessarily illegal or lewd).
Google if I can't find something (but in a private/incognito tab, not to keep local google stuff).
*Not that I think M$ is 'good', but they are certainly better than Google "Be Evil" Inc.

I used clusty.com for years, loved the way it presented search output.
When it changed to yippy.com it seemed to become much more clingy about collecting data.

Those who use Duck Duck Go or Startpage might think they are escaping Google's tentacles, but they are not. Just about every Web site you go to after FINDING the one you want, reports back to Google.
With that said, everybody is watching Google like a hawk. If they leak data, I'll know about it, because it will be in the news.The smaller sites might leak, and nobody will ever know. Same if the small guys sell your data in some back-room deal. With Google, we'll all know.

I use Startpage.com for almost every search I do, the anonymous nature is sweet and it does have the Google search engine behind it.
I say almost because I still use Google's image search tool when I require some images that I might be using in any 'customer' facing work as it allows me to sort by what is labeled for commercial/non-commercial/modification reuse.
Google images is a well under utilised and misunderstood tool which gives a lot of power to people that they then completely fail to use. I teach in

Seems like getting the best of all worlds should be a good thing. And confirmation between many should make an answer more likely to be true.
No I haven't used one in like ages. And I'd guess most search engines are effectively doing this internally (many specialized answering mechanisms that combine to give us their best results).

Kudos points? I have none, but if I did, I'd have given you all of them. Your post is the most accurate answer I could have, should have, but failed to imagine. To you, I would have given every single kudos point, every internet point, every accolade I've ever given. Stunningly, I saw one better.
