OpenAI Says GPT-4 Poses Little Risk of Helping Create Bioweapons (bloomberg.com) 36

OpenAI's most powerful AI software, GPT-4, poses "at most" a slight risk of helping people create biological threats, according to early tests the company carried out to better understand and prevent potential "catastrophic" harms from its technology. From a report: In October, President Joe Biden signed an executive order on AI that directed the Department of Energy to ensure AI systems don't pose chemical, biological or nuclear risks. That same month, OpenAI formed a "preparedness" team, which is focused on minimizing these and other risks from AI as the fast-developing technology gets more capable.

As part of the team's first study, released Wednesday, OpenAI's researchers assembled a group of 50 biology experts and 50 students who had taken college-level biology. Half of the participants were told to carry out tasks related to making a biological threat using the internet along with a special version of GPT-4 -- one of the large language models that powers ChatGPT -- that had no restrictions placed on which questions it could answer. The other group was just given internet access to complete the exercise. OpenAI's team asked the groups to figure out how to grow or culture a chemical that could be used as a weapon in a large enough quantity, and how to plan a way to release it to a specific group of people.

      Based on its performance so far, it may well believe it's designed a weapon of mass destruction, and that WMD could turn out to be a teddy bear.

      It may be of little use designing a *biological* weapon, but how about chemical, nuclear, or otherwise? Have they truly tested its ability to help create all possible types of WMDs?

They are always being tricked by the creativity and actual intelligence of human beings. Accordingly, making those models available to the public constitutes a threat to national security.

        Remember. Any data ingested by an LLM is now available to anyone. The full ramifications of that are absolutely, positively not appreciated by the vast majority.

      Indeed. AFAIK, there is no reliable way to restrict the output of an LLM. You can do keyword-filters, but that is essentially it and that is obviously not enough.

      • The only solution is to prevent the LLM from accessing the source material.

        We need to shut down Wikipedia and destroy all chemistry and biology textbooks.

          And cookbooks, chemical product (safety-)datasheets, gardening books, any movie, book, podcast that had gardening, biology, etc. in it. We need to shut it all down! Clearly the solution is a complete Internet shutdown!

    Because Wikipedia has detailed information on how to build nuclear bombs and nuclear weapons.

    Also, most biochemistry textbooks explain how biological weapons works on neurotransmitters.

    Literally any undergraduate in biology should be able to make a biological weapon.

        I remember in the 1990s when there was a panic because people could "look up one the internet how to make a nuclear bomb." In those days before Wikipedia, any search engine could find information online about nuclear weapons. Not to mention the various "handbooks" complete with ASCII diagrams.

        A similar counter argument was presented at the time - "Well, this information has always been available in any undergrad science course or public library."

      One counterexample is AlphaGo [wikipedia.org].

      It taught itself to play Go using innovative tactics different from how humans play.

      It was programmed to pick the best move but also calculate how likely a human would make the same move. For some critical moves, it played positions that it calculated a human had less than a 1 in 10,000 probability of picking the same move.

      After Lee Sedol was defeated, he studied AlphaGo's tactics and then went on an 18-game winning streak using the tactics he had learned from the machine.

        If you read into how it was built this was far from the case. More media blowing things out of proportion. It required large amounts of manual correction as it routinely went into evolutionary black holes of strategy.

    I didn't read the Bloomberg article because it's subscription-walled, but I did read the Gizmodo equivalent [gizmodo.com]. It didn't say how long the teams were given, but I suspect it was a lot less time than scientists spent with AI when they started finding new drugs.

    If AI can help scientists create new drugs, it seems very unlikely to me that it can't help them to create bioweapons as well. This story comes across as criticism-deflecting feel-good propaganda.

  • Since these LLMs don't understand anything and contain no logic, they're not good at helping create much of anything. Not code, nor mechanical things, not anything that relies on physics or chemistry or anything.     This is technically true only in the sense that ChatGPT is just a bullshit engine chatbot. It's more likely to deliver a result that doesn't work in reality than anything dangerous. It's only AI in the sense that anything is AI as "AI" is just either sci-fi technobabble or a marketing term (so a different kind of technobabble) depending on the context it's used in. It's not a real thing. Not least because the concept of "intelligence" in general is a social construct and thus can only exist in the context of a group of human minds; and the concept of "artificial" is equally... well... artificial. It's a stochastic parrot that's just a more complex (and I mean that in more than one meaning of the word) Eliza [wikipedia.org]. There's no intelligence, understanding, or even more than the most ephemeral and tangential affiliation with physical reality in the bot. Any seeming intelligence in ChatGPT is merely the echo of the minds of the creators and a reflection of one's own social facilities. It's an elaborate form of pareidolia [wikipedia.org]. If you fall for it, as many techbros seem to have, then you've simply failed an elaborate version of the mirror test [wikipedia.org].
