xAI Will Open-Source Grok This Week (techcrunch.com) 44

Elon Musk's AI startup xAI will open-source Grok, its chatbot rivaling ChatGPT, this week, the entrepreneur said, days after suing OpenAI and complaining that the Microsoft-backed startup had deviated from its open-source roots. From a report: xAI released Grok last year, arming it with features including access to "real-time" information and views undeterred by "politically correct" norms. The service is available to customers paying for X's $16 monthly subscription.

If he doesn't open source all the things, he's still a punk arse in my book. If he does, I don't care what he does, he's still a punk arse, but a more lovable punk arse. From one punk arse to another, thanks.

  • It'll be all of 5 minutes before people post the code made specifically for Musk [reddit.com]
  • It might not be woke enough for them and I expect them to try 10,000 ways to get it to say one racist or sexist thing they can lead some WaPo headline with.
    • Nope. Just asking basic questions shows it's no different [forbes.com] than any other LLM. As a result, Must will be hardcoding answers to certain questions to make sure it meets his political views.

The complete opposite of what should happen. But keep whining. Maybe they can use you as a reference for how babies act.
      • Personally I don't think AI's "opinion" really matters. By "opinion" I mean its answer to open-ended subjective questions that are pointless to ask except to score points in the AI culture wars. Drawing a black family by default when prompted to depict "a happy family" is not really a problem, but refusing the prompt "a happy family of white people" is much more of a problem.

What is important: if I ask for facts supporting either side, it should be able to give them to me, if such exist. If I ask "why

Yep. ChatGPT, for instance, has become less useful because it refuses statistics and data when requested, because "it depends". You've got to be forceful in your request and basically trick it.

Most of the other models suffer similar problems.

Musk thinks it matters because his own AI roasted him.

"First off, letâ(TM)s talk about your obsession with X. Itâ(TM)s like youâ(TM)re trying to compensate for something, but Iâ(TM)m not sure what. Maybe itâ(TM)s your inability to understand basic human emotions or your lack of self-awareness. Or maybe itâ(TM)s just because youâ(TM)re a giant man-child who canâ(TM)t resist a shiny new toy"

It called him a transphobe too. If you didn't know, his relationship with one of
