I read roughly two meters worth of books per year, which comes down to six or so per month. Obviously it depends a lot on the books themselves: a 1500 page monster will take considerably longer than a pocket. And collections of short stories take forever, since I tend to stop after each story to ruminate on it.

This number is considerably higher than five years ago, because back then I was mostly reading magazines. I decided to give up on that particular hobby and start reading books again - in part because I had so many unread books lying around. At the current speed, it will take another four years or so to get through the backlog.

This month I read the Witcher saga. Of course I can't help comparing it to the games, which I also played. In the book Geralt bows to anyone and everyone (unlike the game, which informs you he has a reputation for never bowing to anyone), and is a hell of a lot more sexually repressed. His combat style, full of pirouettes, is easily recognizable, but he seems to completely forget about his ability to cast signs during the course of the story.

The first two books basically read like a collection of side quests from Witcher 3. The next five books are the main quest, which centers on the war with Nilfgaard, and focuses on Ciri more than on Geralt. I found I didn't really appreciate the writing style: too much of the story is told from the point of view of various future historians, there is too much attention to minor characters who usually die soon anyway, the story jumps haphazardly through time and space, and the author has an unpleasant knack for throwing in tiny details that have huge repercussions, winking to the reader to show how clever he is. These are not major irritants, and the whole saga is certainly worth a read, especially if you liked the games as well, but I think it would have been more enjoyable had it simply focused on Geralt and his adventures as a witcher.

Submission + - Following Equifax Breach, CEO Doesn't Know If Data Is Encrypted (techtarget.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Equifax alerted the public in September 2017 to a massive data breach that exposed the personal and financial information — including names, birthdays, credit card numbers and Social Security numbers — of approximately 145 million customers in the United States to hackers. Following the Equifax breach, the former CEO Richard Smith and the current interim CEO Paulino do Rego Barros Jr. were called to testify before the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation this week for a hearing titled "Protecting Consumers in the Era of Major Data Breaches." During the hearing, Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) questioned Smith and Barros about Equifax's use of — or lack of — encryption for customer data at rest. Smith confirmed that the company was not encrypting data at the time of the Equifax breach, and Gardner questioned whether or not that was intentional. "Was the fact that [customer] data remained unencrypted at rest the result of an oversight, or was that a decision that was made to manage that data unencrypted at rest?" Gardner asked Smith. Smith pointed out that encryption at rest is just one method of security, but eventually confirmed that a decision was made to leave customer data unencrypted at rest. "So, a decision was made to leave it unencrypted at rest?" Gardner pushed. "Correct," Smith responded.

Gardner moved on to Barros and asked whether he has implemented encryption for data at rest since he took over the position on Sept. 26. Barros began to answer by saying that Equifax has done a "top-down review" of its security, but Gardner interrupted, saying it was a yes or no question. Barros stumbled again and said it was being reviewed as part of the response process and Gardner pushed again. "Yes or no, does the data remain unencrypted at rest?" "I don't know at this stage," Barros responded. "Senator, if I may. It's my understanding that the entire environment [in] which this criminal attack occurred is much different; it's a more modern environment with multiple layers of security that did not exist before. Encryption is only one of those layers of security," Smith said.

Impeachment requires a majority vote of the House. It's likely that the Democrats will take the house in 2018, so that's a possibility. It requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate to convict and remove from office, and that's exceedingly unlikely. If the Democrats sweep all Senate races in 2018, they will not control nearly two-thirds of the Senate. Removing Trump from office would require a lot of Republican cooperation.

The GOP has basically fallen in line behind Trump. There's a solid core of maybe a fourth or a third of the electorate that's behind him, and they will not be swayed by any rational means. They're not enough to get a candidate elected, except in particular spots, but they are enough to sway a Republican primary. Any Republican senator who votes to convict Trump is in great danger of losing the Republican nomination to a Trump-supporting Republican.

Therefore, impeachment and conviction is extremely unlikely to happen.

Trump could be temporarily removed by the Twenty-Fifth Amendment process, but that process says that, if the removed President claims to be fit for duty again, that person is reinstated unless two-thirds of both the House and the Senate disagree.

Unless President Trump dies or is legitimately incapacitated, or decides to resign, we're stuck with him until January 21, 2021.

Then you are a fool. As a canadian, I've been in physical encounters with people where they have drawn weapons. If I or they had a gun instead of a knife, things would have ended much worse for someone.

It is nearly impossible to get a legal handgun in canada. Most guns used in crimes are smuggled from the USA at extreme risk. And if you carry it around and someone sees that, you are going to jail.

Like it or not, if you want to change the culture of gun violence in the USA, you have to start by restricting gun sales. That means depriving people of owning guns that are not meant for hunting. All automatic weapons, all hand guns, and probably more types too (i am not an expert on guns, nor would i care to be). It means getting people to give up the "personal self defence" aspect of gun ownership. I doubt anyone has guns for that purpose in canada, simply because they are so restricted with how you can transport them and use them, any situation where you would need to have the gun "at the ready" for defence, simply wouldn't be possible.

So i would argue that you have no idea about canadian gun laws and how they are influencing society. The laws shape the culture. I'm not sure how you could possibly miss that fundamental point. When americans say that the government can't take away their guns, that statement is clearly part law and part culture. Change the laws and you would change the culture, for sure.

All at once? Of course not. Over the span of several hundred years? Yes.

Over time, "Lake Okeechobee" would become MULTIPLE lakes... Okeechobee, defined by its current dike... a new freshwater lake comprising what's now the "everglades" portion of Broward & Palm Beach counties (let's tentatively call it "Lake Seminole") connected to the original lake via canals, a new brackish-water lake between Tamiami Trail and I-75 (let's tentatively call it "Lake Miccosukee"), Florida's new Caribbean Coast (so named to disambiguate it from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts) occupying western Dade, eastern Collier, and basically all of mainland Monroe county, and another new freshwater lake north of Lake Okeechobee (let's call it, "Lake Kissimmee", because it would occupy most of what's now the agricultural part of the Kissimmee Valley... and point out to non-Floridians that it's a "valley" only in the sense that Floridians call an area where the terrain is 10 feet higher than the surrounding area "a hill").

The four lakes would get most of their water from direct rainfall. None would be particularly deep, but they'd get plenty of water because they'd span a geographically HUGE area that gets massive amounts of rain. They'd just dump less of that rain into the Gulf & Atlantic than they do now.

Plus, rising sea levels will happen slowly enough that most urban areas will get raised by redevelopment long before it becomes an existential threat to the area.

I'd argue that higher water costs will perversely drive INCREASED development in Florida... as water becomes more expensive, agricultural users will start selling off their land to developers, who'll build new condos, neighborhoods, office parks, golf courses, and discount retail outlets... the new development will drive up land prices, and induce even more agribusiness owners to sell out to developers. To a residential customer, a $10/month difference in the water bill is gripe-worthy, but not the end of the world. To someone like ConAgra, a $20,000/month difference in the water bill could mean the difference between oranges and office parks.

It really CAN'T be any other way. Florida's biggest single industry is its own growth. It might not be "sustainable" in any way that respects the natural environment, but that doesn't mean it won't continue for centuries until the entire state of Florida consists of 3-6 megalopoli sitting on terrain that's about as "natural" as lower Manhattan (there's actually a swampy island buried underneath the concrete, though post-9/11 was just about the only time we actually got to SEE evidence of its existence).
