Actually, I can. Come to think of it, it's not so far-fetched to state that over 5.2 billion people think KDE sucks. This multiple choice poll just proves it!
Wish I could moderate polls as trolling. I at least expected Gnome (which I also dislike). Long live Windowmaker!
Well, even with standard "multiple choice," you still make only one choice - you choose only one thing. "Multiple option" may be a more accurate term, since it avoids the ambiguity of the word choice in this instance. That being said, "multiple choice" is unfortunately so ingrained in society's lexicon that it's probably impossible to change, but maybe some day someone will see the light, and things will change.
I suppose it's a good thing that Slashcode does a little error checking. I tried to vote for arbitrarly-selected option 2 [slashdot.org] by creating my own poll url, and Slashdot responded "Your vote (2) was rejected."
I suppose option 2 is "Windows XP" anyway. Good thing/. rejected my vote.
Lighten up, it's just plain funny. Even when I used to work with the IceWM team, I would have found this absolutely hilarious. Just like now, and I'm not involved in any desktop/WM teams.
I would have to say this is one of the most clever, and well executed slashdot polls ever.
Really? Could you please qualify yourself as to be the definitive master as to what makes a joke well executed?
You must have an impressive resume as a comedian to carry such weight. But, I do beg to differ with your definition of what happened. You see, the poll itself was a joke. And it was a joke posted on a website. Therefore, it was a joke. I hope I haven't lost you so far. Now, since it was a joke, and it was based off timing, and environment, which is really the most important part of having a joke be funny (Timing, and environment). In the words of George Carlin, every funny joke must have an exaggeration -- that's why rape can be funny. Picture Porky Pig raping Daffy Duck. Now, this joke's "exaggeration" comes in the form of only one option on a multiple choice poll.
Now, because there is a method of execution for any joke whether it be funny or just plain stupid, it can be said to be well executed or poorly executed. Because of the release of KDE 3.0 and the typical Slashdot poll guidelines, the execution was quite satisfactory and quite funny. Hence, this was well executed.
As for the linguistics lesson, I think you need to go take a few courses at The Lighten-Up-And-Appreciate-Humor Institute.
i'm still undecided on this one folks: should i now formally uninstall KDE from my box or just post a flame? in case you couldn't tell, i use gnome, because my eyes are too sensitive to ugliness.
This poll was very confusing to me. I clicked on the little circle next to KDE3, but my vote seems to have been registered to KDE3. I suspect that this whole thing was presented in such a complicated way to lure some votes to KDE3 from us people without a high-school diploma (who traditionally vote KDE3).
You can either choose to vote and say, "this is how many/. readers think KDE is the best". OR you can chose to not vote, and learn that a substantially larger number of/. readers don't give a hoot about KDE.
I supose this poll will get may be around 10,000 or so votes. That's out of half a million subscribed/. readers. By that number, only about 1/50 people think KDE is good, where the other 49 think something else is good. By the Pigeon Hole, I'd say that the 4 or 5 other desktop environments will each get a significantly larger count of approval than KDE.
This poll only proves how much KDE sucks. Great work. Should have thought this out if the submitter was KDE fan. Otherwise, great way to futz the numbers!
The average poll gets about 30,000 votes total (if it is up for 1 day or 3 days this seems to pretty much be the trend). So check back after the next poll is up and see how many people votes.

I'd explain to you what apathy is, but I don't really care enough.
By the Pigeon Hole, I'd say that the 4 or 5 other desktop environments will each get a significantly larger count of approval than KDE.
No, by the pigeon hole, _at least one_ of the 4 or 5 others has a larger count. Remember it's entirely possible to have 10,000 for KDE3, 2 for GNOME, 3.5 for windowmaker, 2*pi for icewm, and ~489,990.22 for KDE1 running under Qt console [slashdot.org] in a fullscreen xterm. Well... almost entirely
If it werent for GNOME and all the "monkeying around" with the direction of their project, it would be THEIR name in lights here, not KDE. Instead, GNOME has fragmented like a cream pie hitting Gates' face, Ximian Here, Bonobo there, Mono Mono Everywhere.
Meanwhile, the KDE guys continue to build KDE, and nothing but KDE. Its no wonder they won the desktop war, IMHO.
I keep playing around with gnome and kde of various levels of development, and while they offer some really interesting features, I don't really use those features and the speed, while not unbearable, is atrocious when compared to Wmaker+ROX combo. I login, and have wmaker and rox in less htan a second, I can open up directories in rox pretty much instantly, and it doesn't look too shabby either. For experienced users, this sort of thing is perfect... Of course, subsitiute the window manager of your choice, but windowmaker offers a lot in the way of session management/application management not offered by other windowmanagers. I have blackbox, sawfish, and icewm to play around with when I get bored... Gnome and kde are also there for the libraries and to occasionally play with those too...
But no matter what I try, I keep coming back to windowmaker and rox, and it always feels nice and comfortable...
Really, if the poll is this loaded, I have to conclude that anything less than 20,000 resonses means KDE 3.0 is not a favored desktop environment. 'Nuff said.
Especially fun to see people get their panties in a bunch about it - people, it's a joke/. poll about KDE, we don't really need to consider the "social and ethical ramifications" of it; try to get out more:)
I am now searching for Slashdot members who are willing to be the named plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit against Slashdot. This suit will seek both injunctive relief and damages for the named plaintiffs on behalf of themselves and all other similarly situated Slashdotters for injuries proximately resulting from the willful and wanton omission of the mandatory CoyboyNeal option in today's poll.
Any Slashdot member with positive Karma who has suffered pain, suffering, mental anguish, loss of consortium with loved ones (including loved desktop environments on loved computers), dizziness, fatiuge, nausea, or loss of bodily functions resulting from the loss of a CoyboyNeal choice in this poll should contact me by selecting and voting for the CoyboyNeal option in this poll.
I'm not sure if you're kidding or not, so I'll respond.
Once you post a comment to an article using your own name (not anonymously) you lose your ability to moderate on comments for that article. This was done to prevent people from moderating down posts that rebutt their own. You should still be able to mod on other articles until you run out of points or your mod-time expires.
I know that I can't moderate a particular story's thread once I post in that thread (and i thought I pointed that out in my post, apparently not skillfully enough). It was when I first loaded the story, before I posted, that I had a page with the "You've got Mod points" message and the "Moderate" button, but the little click and select boxes to choose the moderation category were not on the page (or at least weren't visible). Usually they're there, they just "swim" on the page so that you can't tell which goes with which comment.
Well, you are right about the distinction, but I would say windowmaker goes above and beyond a window maker. Maybe not the level of KDE or gnome, but at least somewhere in between. If you can call CDE a desktop environment, I think you could call WindowMaker an environment. It does not come with a lot of utilities, but it does manage sessions and applications in more of an environment style, and includes WINGs, a toolkit that *could* be used to build applications consistant with the stock windowmaker dialogs' look and feel.
So, I would say you have for Desktop environments, CDE (hah, yeah right), KDE, Gnome, XFCE, WindowMaker, Rox (basic session management and framework, awesome file management), and Windowmaker. One could probably make the case for other "window managers", but those are the major classes I use that feel more like an environment than a mere window manager. For example, sawfish is very clearly a mere window manager. enlightenment probably the same way, fvwm, etc.. I personally combine ROX and windowmaker for an excellent user experience, and have made applications using the ROX framework..
