Carter had it tough because he wasn't really up to the job and was a slow learner when dealing with the Soviets. Oddly enough Obama is reliving that with the Russians.

Feed Techdirt: Tom Lehrer, Culture And Copyright After Death (google.com)

If you don't know who Tom Lehrer is, well, you've missed out for a long, long time. Still, it's never too late to catch up, and there are plenty of great sources, including the The Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel on YouTube (though, hardly a "rare cut" this remains my favorite). Of course there's much more to the lore of Lehrer than just his music, and Ben Smith at Buzzfeed has an has an excellent long discussion of Lehrer's life, including his very brief, but massive, music career, and his life for the past half a century in which he more or less tries to hide from or live down that whole episode of his life. It's a great read.

But what caught my attention was some discussion that Lehrer has had with certain fans concerning the copyright on his works, whether or not it's okay to put them online and what happens to them after his death. The simple answer seems to be that Lehrer couldn't care any less about all of it.

While Lehrer has made startlingly little effort to ensure a future for his work, a handful of superfans have filled in the gap. One is Erik Meyn, a Norwegian who manages the Tom Lehrer Wisdom Channel on YouTube, a feed of performance videos and playlists that has received more than 10 million views since 2007. Meyn originally posted content to the channel without Lehrers permission and called him from overseas in December 2008 to apologize, a conversation he later posted on the Tom Lehrer! Facebook page. An excerpt:

TL: Well, you see, Im fine with that channel.

EM: Youre very kind. But my question is: Who in your family will take care of your copyright and your songs in the distant future?

TL: I dont have a family.

EM: OK, but what do you think will happen to the channel and your songs? And if you have someone who will act on your behalf, could you give them my name in case theyd want the channel taken down?

TL: Yes, but theres no need to remove that channel.

EM: I was just wondering what will happen in the future, because youre certainly going to continue to sell records.

TL: Well, I dont need to make money after Im dead. These things will be taken care of.

EM: I feel like I gave away some of your songs to public domain without even asking you, and that wasnt very nice of me.

TL: But Im fine with that, you know.

EM: Will you establish any kind of foundation or charity or something like that?

TL: No, I wont. Theyre mostly rip-offs.

There's also the discussion with a fan who has been in contact here and there with Lehrer for the past 20 years or so, who stopped by his house once, found Lehrer's master tapes, and Lehrer just gave them to him:

In 2011, Morris was rummaging through the Sparks Street basement, and alongside the collection of books and records Lehrer referred to as his Noel Coward shrine were two boxes marked masters. They were, to Morris, the holy grail. These were the original recordings of the 1959 album More Songs by Tom Lehrer: the orchestral session and outtakes and Lehrers recordings. Morris offered to help Lehrer remix them from half-inch tapes into stereo recordings.

Well, why dont you just take them with you? Lehrer said.

I was like, Are you kidding?! These are the master copies! Morris recalled. I was just trying to reassure him, Ill be very careful with them, I wont let them fall in the wrong hands, Im not going to distribute copies to anyone without your permission.

I dont care! Lehrer told him. Theyre not worth anything to me.
None of this is to suggest that any other artists should necessarily follow down the same path. But I always find it interesting to see artists who decide that the traditional concepts of copyright don't make any sense to them, and just choose not to have anything to do with them. Given that Lehrer is so influential on so many people in so many different fields today, it seemed worth sharing this little tidbit.

Yep, and you need a 30-100 MB app for pretty much every little task you do. A good OS, built the right way, provides a strong set of basic tools that can be used together to do almost anything the user wants. Personally, I *do* want a real OS on a tablet - because there are just way too many real-world tasks that tablets either can't do at all or can only do with ridiculous levels of complexity and frustration. Real filesystems are just the beginning. FWIW, I'd rank the usability of tablet OSes for real-world use as first, Full Windows, then WinRT closely followed by IOS, with Android bringing up the rear. If there were a Chrome tablet (and WHY ISN"T THERE?), it would likely fall between the two Windows versions, and Ubuntu could well grab the lead if they can find any good hardware to optimize for...

Mark Shuttleworth and the rest of the Ubuntu guys get this, and that's why they're plowing ahead no matter the naysayers. Also, "full-fat" doesn't necessarily mean actually fat - IIRC, the first Unix System 7 CAD workstation I used had 4 MB of RAM, a huge 40 MB hard disk, and a stunning 1 MIP 68K processor with an incredible 1280x1024 display. Today's mobile processors have compute power only found in supercomputers not many years ago. Look at Puppy to see how slim you can make a "full-fat" Linux OS, even with a modern kernel and apps...

BTW, no OS exists in today's tablet/GUI world to let you easily snap together your own tools from a rich set of components - that requires GUI integration of the stream/operator paradigm as implemented in UNIX (but with different syntax and semantics making the gozintas and gozouttas intuitive), transparently merged with the browser and able to leverage not only local, but also remote web assets and applications. Add touch and non-touch dynamic gestural interfaces, and you've really got something...

In what way? I have personally found that there is not much difference between the two since they are both Word processors. Of course if you want professional documents you could always go for LaTeX which is surprisingly easy to use since you only need a text editor or you can use a graphical interface as well, however there are commercial type setter software packages as well. It really depends what the user or organisation require (Note: I did not use the word "want", there is a huge difference) to get the job done.

Similarly, Photoshop is bad, and Gimp is worse.

Again how are these products bad? They both can do some quite amazing things with images since they are both image manipulation software.

Why is the open source community incapable of outdoing commercial de-facto standard apps with poor UIs?

I don't think it is a matter of "free open source software" (or FOSS) outdoing commercial software since it would be difficult for FOSS to match a commercial company in features and they also run the risk (especially in the US) of infringing software patents. However if a FOSS product will do everything that the user or organisation requires then why spend money on the commercial software,

As for poor UI's you should elaborate on that. If the UI does the job efficiently then what is the problem? What do you expect a "telepathic" or some other "magical" interface? :)
