If you can automate yard to yard long haul deliveries, then you can use your humans for last mile.

Longhaul is almost a solved problem as far as automation is concerned, and certainly not complex.

Automating inter-city deliveries is WAY more interesting, because it's way more complex - and also way more useful. It replaces couriers, taxis, inter-city shipping drivers, and probably also buses (because if you don't have to pay for a driver, something like Uber gets way cheaper). Why would you take a bus that plods along on its own schedule with stops, when for a little less you get a private car that picks you up where you are and takes you where you are going?

Linux does not support the apps nor drivers that would allow a significant percentage of our users to migrate off Windows. Supporting multiple managed environments is going to be more expensive than one, so why would you?

People want something that they can use. It doesn't need to be the most powerful, the most flexible, the most capable—but it does need to meet some standard of usability. Linux is very versatile, and provided you have someone like Google putting an interface layer on it, you can sell it to hundreds of millions of people. But where do I tell my mother to go buy a new Linux box? Who troubleshoots it, since I live 3500km away? How do I tell her how to integrate it with her iPad, the single most usable bit of tech she's ever had?

I don't. I tell her to go to the Apple store. The people there are friendly and always help her. They don't get mad if she goes back with the same questions. They don't judge her if she doesn't get it. Linux doesn't need marketing, it needs a usability budget, or frankly, nothing at all. Just because I don't have any jackhammers at home doesn't mean jackhammer manufacturers just need to get the word out, I have no use for a tool that powerful.

Linux will almost certainly never take over the desktop, but I still have no idea why anybody cares. What about my mother switching to Linux would make anything better for anyone? Linux and FreeBSD and their ilk are power tools for power users who have time and energy for that stuff. That used to be me, but it's not even me anymore. (I don't even use my desktop Mac anymore. I'm typing this on my iPad.)

Yeah. Star Trek might have been science fiction when it started out, but it didn't keep up with the possibilities of modern physics, and a lot of it is just silly. Please do quote. It IS about 3x as expensive according to PG&E's data. Also, California is seismically active and has forest fires, the ground shifting or the ground getting really hot still causes issues and fixing underground cables is a lot harder.

Your pilot should be there for perverse instantiation situations like the Boing 767 Max accidents but should have full override capabilities. Most planes have fly-by-wire anyway so the pilot's actions can be analyzed for machine-learning. The one thing we have to be careful of is that the machine-learning is also used to train new pilots on how to handle the aircraft in a real-world simulator as well as in practice. Losing the skill will be disasterous. Also, the pilots should have training in emergency procedures and understand basic avionics so that they can cope with novel situations like in the unrealistic but possible movie with Denzel Washington. Just because it's never happened doesn't meant a novel situation is never needed.

that's the part that worries me. I'll admit I'm a NIMBY (though pretty much for everybody's backyard) because I don't trust private corporations to maintain the safety of nuke plants as they age. And I don't trust Americans (of which I am) not to privatize publicly run plants.

What would make me get behind nuclear is a plant that's just as cheap (or more so) to run safely. And not "cheaper than cleaning up the disaster". Again, I don't trust Americans to hold corporations accountable. We couldn't even do it when Equifax leaked every single person's credit information.

Given how expensive it is, if I can get something that just covers the functionality I need at a dramatically reduced cost, why wouldn't you? Particularly if that solution still outputs files readable by other office suites?

We used to get around this problem with giant resistor banks, even coal and other plants had these problems of scaling up and down fast enough well through the 80s (before computer-controlled solid state regulators became a thing), the extra energy was dumped in giant resistor banks into a pool of water.

With nuclear you can power all sorts of 'fun stuff' too, you could actually make wind turbines produce wind or melt some sand for energy storage.

Makes sense to who? Investors are behind the money which is making this work, investors invest so they can see a profit not provide a service to the community (consider that a general comment, obviously there are exceptions.) No business case no money spent, pretty plain stuff. If it makes sense to you to fund this under the current system then go ahead. However I am guessing you cannot afford to, the people who can afford to are the ones who need to decide how to spend their money, not me or you.
