I don't know that I would actually write any of the broken code snippets from the article, but I do know that many of them would slip right by me in a code review.

I like C++. I've been using it for 30 years, and I eagerly await the day I can use each new generation of C++ features, because I think the language is improving. But, I'm also not blind to the fact that it's easy to write code that is badly broken, but looks quite correct. And that's a problem with the language, not the user.

I have a smartphone and a tablet. I use the tablet for reading e-books. My phone's screen is too small for that purpose. I would like to be able to carry in my pocket a device with a screen large enough to read e-books. Enter the folding phone. You are not interested in this; millions out there are.

It seems to me they should have mounted a substantial number of phones in machines that would have folded and unfolded the phone a sufficiently large number of times to estimate the lifetime of the screen and hinge. This then could be folded into the warranty given estimates of how often owners open and close the phone. Currently, it sounds like the lifetime is a few days or weeks.

Exactly, there isn't one. I guess in time that CMake could form the beginning of a package management system, e.g. if CMake allowed software to express dependencies in an abstract fashion inside of CMakelists.txt then they could be pulled down and compiled. At present it can specify dependencies on subdirs, or special FIND_ macros for common packages but it could evolve.

I think even CMake as it is now is a massive improvement over the chaos that existed before. My company had to maintain dozens of .vcproj files with targets in release/debug. I ported it all to CMake (which generates the .vcproj files) because I was sick to death of manually maintaining these files in all their configurations. When we ported our code to Linux, I was able to generate makefiles instead with minimal effort.

It is not as if a computer is really necessary. Good enough textbooks have existed for a very long time. If not for #1, most families would have figured out how to replace teachers with textbooks a century ago.
