And that is because brick-and-mortar stores, by and large, suck. Do you go to a brick-and-mortar store, find exactly what you want, pay, and leave? Rarely. OK, so you don't see what you want and ask a salesperson. What do you get? A dumb look, often enough. Suppose you get the salesperson to understand and help... "Oh, we don't have that but we can order it for you if you come back in a week". Yeah. I could have done that myself, genius.

Even worse if the item you're looking for was advertised recently. Then it will be out of stock, and you'll have to choose between paying full price for the similar substitute, taking a raincheck (if the store offers such) and waiting, or giving up.

There are stores which don't have these problems; they're not the ones Amazon is eating the lunch of.

How do you KNOW that? There are plenty of times when I may want to take a call if it's important.

How do you KNOW that? How do you know its important until you answer it?

And if you don't know, but expect it might be important, then you'll need to check. Checking your phone to see who is calling is just as obnoxious as checking your watch. Moreso probably because after checking your watch, you have even less time to answer it so your panic answer dance will be that much more urgent.

I do that too but it's not AS EASY. Again it's the layering you are missing here.

Its pretty easy. Certainly not difficult enough nor something that occurs frequently enough for being able to do it from my watch to to even register as a "layer" of value.

.That relies heavily on services from a single manufacturer, and it fairly useless without.

As I said, it works with cyanogenmod meaning the "single manufacturer" is less critical to its continued operation or functionality. Google could vanish off the face of the earth tomorrow and android would live on.

Android Wear is every bit as pigeon-holed, in fact moreso ...[...]

False.

there are already far more Apple Watch apps to gain non-Apple functionality.

Lol. Seeing as they are inextricably tied to itunes and ios, calling it non-apple functionality means what exactly?

The pebble has non-apple functionality, you can toss your iphone in a ditch buy and android and keep using your pebble.

Android wear at least works with android not-tied-to-google (cyanogenmod) and may work with other OSes such as sailfish etc.

The apple watch? Not so much.

i see it as the genius of biochemical warfare by plants

our livers have been in an evolutionary arms race with plants for hundreds of millions of years. they make a substance that kills, maims, disorients, or deters us. one up plants. our livers do their best to mop it up. one up animals. rinse repeat

perversely, we've developed a taste for some of those substances. like cayenne pepper or horseradish, as a paradoxically enjoyable taste. or heroin or cocaine, as a disorienting drug

in a way, the plant still wins when we get addicted to them, like these bees. drug use is just slow motion suicide. it might not kill us immediately, but it brings us back for more, and more and more, to finish the job

What worries me is the concept of deconstructed foods. Applied to pudding it would go something like this presentation:

1 Plain, unflavoured cooked flour+egg pudding
2 A side of pudding flavoured sauce, like apple sauce
3 The missing bulk sweet ingredients that should have gone in the pudding e.g. vanilla essence, dried fruit and spices all mixed up as another side.

To eat it, you get a bit 1, a bit of 3 and a bit of 2.

As a metaphor, it describes the human condition, but you always wonder if the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

It's more like a digital copy sort of thing. A particle gets sucked into a black hole. But there is radiation (emanation) on the edges of it that send the particle back into the universe, except it is quantum linked to the particle that's still inside. That link is a wormhole.
Therefore the black hole seems to sample the particle (maybe adds some drm to it) and spews out a particle linked to the particle that got sucked in.

So now we've got all these linked particles floating around space, quantum linked with particles inside a black hole. Weird.

If the GPU is doing the decoding then you just record frame buffer.

Just under 4.5 Gbps. 2 hours gets you just under 4 TB.

You can take advantage of the pre-existing chroma subsampling to reduce that, and you can do as much encoding (lossless or not) as you can keep up with to reduce it further. But even at full, lossless RGB, 23.976 FPS 4K video recording is easily achievable today.

Just checked a torrent site for Game of Thrones S05E01

Res:624x352, Size:424 MB, Seeds:8622, Leeches:399
Res:720p, Size:1013 MB, Seeds:6849, Leeches:643
Res:1080p, Size:2.66 GB, Seeds:2181, Leeches:171

So it looks like about 10% want 1080p, 40% want 720p, and the remaining 50% are fine with 352p
From that, I'd guess 80% of the market can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p.

But the main takeaway is that most care more about the story than they do about resolution - the acting isn't any better at 1080p.

The first 4 episodes of season 5 were leaked before episode 1 (of season 5) premiered.
That leak was SD resolution, and it's throwing off your stats. A lot of people are seeding it because it came out first. A lot of people are getting it because it's listed alongside the torrents for episodes 2, 3, and 4 in many places across the web.

The comparison between 1080 and 720 is more valid.
