I wish I could remember the author and title to that story, and no it wasn't a bad episode from The Simpsons either. It was one of those cheezy 1940's or 1950's sci-fi stories in a cheap paperback book full of such stories that was common to that era.

If you don't think tht Tau'ri is a micpronounciation of Terran, try getting someone who only knows Vietnamese to pronounce 'school' correctly. It can be a very enlightening experience: completely different sound sets.

Imagine how backward we'd appear to any extra-terrestrial life that was to visit us now - we fight amongst ourselves, over ideologies and resources, we let billions live in poverty without adequate food, water, healthcare and shelter, and we constantly poison ourselves and our environment. To any visitor, we'd appear no better than cave dwellers.

Hu-man is kinda generic, too. You just need to say it in a deep and ominous voice. Same with Lunch, except add more gnashing of teeth and slavering.
Tau'ri is from SG-1, the Stargate TV series currently to be found on Sci-Fi Channel.
I think the 13th Tribe is a Battlestar Galactica thing, but I'm not sure.

13th tribe is definitely Battlestar Galactica. Still remember the spin-off series Galactica: 1980 where they actually found the earth (several centuries behind in technological development), which IMHO lost a little on the original, but all in all the series still made for great TV back then. Now that Babylon 5 is starting to come out on DVD, it'd be nice if Battlestar Galactica would be released on DVD as well...

So, what do we do? We take the word "Earth" from a parent or cousin language, and apply our grammar rules to it. Then, we have a word that means the same thing, and we can "-an"erize it. Terran.
