HP Teases 'Next Gen' VR Headset Made With Microsoft and Valve's Help (engadget.com) 21

HP is teasing a Reverb G2 VR headset developed in tandem with Microsoft and Valve that should be "more immersive, comfortable and compatible" than previous-generation hardware. Engadget reports: The first Reverb wasn't a revolution in design, but it did stand out with a sharp 2,160 x 2,160 pixels per eye. It won't be surprising if HP pursues bragging rights once again, especially when its Twitter teaser claims the new Reverb is the "next benchmark" in VR gear. We wouldn't count on Valve dramatically influencing the design given that the Index remains its pride and joy, though. The new Reverb may be more gamer-friendly, but this is still likely to be aimed as much at professionals as it is enthusiasts.

It will come with a 100gb driver and require new ink for 50 bucks every other day.

    • And it will fail within a year and you will have to argue with them about it for hours even if you have a three year warranty.

      • And even if doesn't they'll stop supporting it in 2 years and no drivers will allow it to work with the latest version of Windows. (And no Linux support.)

Yeah... this sounds like PR fluff.

Every few years there is a VR hype - and every time it falls short.

The last time I thought it miss the target on cost. The displays were good. They seemed to have cracked the 'language' of VR.

So a breakthrough in VR to me is... reducing the cost dramatically. Get a system under $100 and I will buy impulse buy it to try.

I don't entirely disagree, but I do think that's going to be an even more difficult nut to crack.

A 2160x2160 VR headset is going to basically require an RTX2080 or some other very-expensive GPU to power it...and a desktop to use it. Even if the VR headset was free, the rest of the requirements are going to be the barrier to critical mass. Sure, HP can build a computer + VR headset and sell it as a kitchen-sink package, but that's still going to cost more than pretty much anyone is going to be okay with spen

I think the company best poised to make VR happen is Sony. If they can make a VR headset that's not crazy expensive, but still looks good, and is drop-in compatible with the Playstation 5, I think the install base, combined with the known quantity of a game console, and the ability to have first party games made with VR compatibility is a set of advantages that HP doesn't have.

You can get a Samsung Odyssey+ on Amazon right now for $330. About the closest thing you'll get to "entry level/impulse buy" that'll work with gaming, especially if someone already has a VR capable PC. No more expensive than grabbing a new video card or some (really good) RAM.

Watching HL:Alyx play videos would have me very strongly thinking about getting one myself except for the fact that my wife just had a baby literally and month ago and so would kill me if I spent a couple hundred dollars on computer

So you've never heard of Moore's law? The nut will crack with time (or more investment).
We're still on track - (doubling compute power) - so all we need do is wait. We will have a $100 phone that will do this... "soon"

VR headsets have widely been sold out since December.
The number one streaming game on Twitch yesterday was a VR game.

I'm not sure why you think a gaming headset + gaming controller should be cheaper than a garbage monitor and a chinese imported keyboard. The Index is an oddity but at present there are other headsets on the market which are cheaper than buying a gaming monitor + xbox controller. Definitely cheaper than buying a decidedly middle of the range GPU, actually cheaper than the first ever 3D GPU th

The Oculus Go is fun, you can pick one up for less than $150 retail

      And still no groin attachment.

  • Aka building a MS Office killer with the scripting language of MS Office [thedailywtf.com].

Or in this case, building a MS/Valve VR headset killer with MS/Valve VR headset bits.

  • Not even if this is a WMR or SteamVR headset. Still, at least HP hasn't given up, and there are rumors Samsung might have something else coming up too.

My Samsung Odyssey was a great value but everyone else has been moving ahead and MS, high on their cloud fumes, seemed to ignore the field since then. At this point they really just need some minor tweaks to the optics and hand tracking and i'll be a pretty awesome headset.
