Submission + - Smelling This One Specific Scent Can Boost The Brain's Gray Matter (sciencealert.com)

Researchers from Kyoto University and the University of Tsukuba in Japan asked 28 women to wear a specific rose scent oil on their clothing for a month, with another 22 volunteers enlisted as controls who put on plain water instead.

Magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI) scans showed boosts in the gray matter volume of the rose scent participants.

Submission + - Firefox TOS change has an over reaching data grab license term (mozilla.org) 3

agristin writes: Recent update to the Firefox license ( https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/... ) has this disturbing little TOS addition:

"When you upload or input information through Firefox, you hereby grant us a nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to use that information to help you navigate, experience, and interact with online content as you indicate with your use of Firefox."

Seems like an over reach.

Submission + - Slashdot Dies A Slow Death with Crippling Advertisements (slashdot.org) 2

zamboni1138 writes: Anybody familiar with the technology news web forum known as Slashdot have known about the recent decline in quality of stories and comments. Recently Slashdot decided to "upgrade" their advertisement experience resulting in an almost broken user experience for users that implement any kind of ad-blocking technology. Over the last week visitors to the site using ad blockers have noticed a unique experience with javascript alerts explaining "This page could not be loaded properly due to incorrect / bad filtering rule(s) of adblockers in use. Please disable all adblockers to continue using the website. (click OK if you'd like to learn more)". These notices are almost non-stop while trying to load/read a page making the site unusable.

Submission + - Slashdot goes mental with advertising 9

sizzlinkitty writes: Has anyone else noticed Slashdot failing to load because of your ad blocker? I know I sure have and it's breaking my user experience like no other.

Please post the blocking patterns you're using to make Slashdot usable again.

Submission + - Slashdot is dead and has been replaced by an ad-saturated shithole (slashdot.org) 1

Between all the Trump-supporting shitheads that permeate this place, and now ads everywhere you look that can't be blocked without blocking the entire site, I declare Slashdot to be dead.
RIP Slashdot.

Submission + - SPAM: Storm communications recommendations for 2024 2

evil_aaronm writes: With the recent storm, Helene, and others sure to follow, impacted areas commonly lose communications with the outside world due to downed telecoms and power line poles. How can local communities, in 2024, keep in touch with outside aid providers to coordinate rescue and aid operations? Are there radio rigs we "concerned citizens" can use to help these communities keep in touch? Things to consider are portability, including power, and operator licensing. For example, how useful are those systems that anyone can buy advertising ranges of 15 or more miles? Would those be on a band that local authorities can receive? Or do we need something more sophisticated?

Submission + - If you are an immigrant, you're 'an animal' according to Donald Trump (x.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Trump supporters of Slashdot: you sure this is the sort of country you want to live in, where people you've lived and worked beside for years and years, people who are your friends and co-workers, are being called 'animals' by the President of the United States, whose words will incite violence against them? Who will want them all rounded up and deported, regardless of whether they're legal citizens or not?

If you support this man, you're anti-American, plain and simple, and perhaps YOU are the ones who should be rounded up and deported.

Submission + - Windows Update Flaws Allow Undetectable Downgrade Attacks (securityweek.com)

wiredmikey writes: Researcher Alon Leviev is calling urgent attention to major gaps in Microsoft’s Windows Update architecture, warning that malicious hackers can launch software downgrade attacks that make the term “fully patched” meaningless on any Windows machine in the world. During a presentation at the Black Hat conference today in Las Vegas, Leviev showed how he was able to take over the Windows Update process to craft custom downgrades on critical OS components, elevate privileges, and bypass security features.

A Microsoft spokesperson told SecurityWeek the company is developing a security update that will revoke outdated, unpatched VBS system files to mitigate the threat.

Submission + - China on track to reach clean energy targets six years ahead of schedule (electrek.co)

Uncle_Meataxe writes: China, the world’s largest pollution emitter, will likely reach its 2030 clean energy targets soon. The country is on track to achieve its target of 1,200 GW in wind and solar installations this month, about six years ahead of the original timeline of 2030. Solar and wind power have seen exponential growth. According to a recent report from Australia-based Climate Energy Finance, China is the current world leader in renewable energy capacity.

Solar power led capacity additions, with 79.2 GW installed between January and May 2024, accounting for 68% of total new capacity. A total of 19.8 GW of wind capacity has been added so far in 2024, or about 17% of the total new additions.

China's clean energy push has been driven by government policies and market forces. The government heavily subsidizes renewable energy projects and implements regulations to curb carbon emissions. Advancements in technology have made solar and wind power cost-effective further accelerating their adoption. Though China has become a global leader in clean energy adoption, it still relies heavily on coal-fired power plants and will need to replace those facilities with sustainable options in order to truly offset its CO2 emissions.

Submission + - Texas Spot Power Prices Jump Almost 100-Fold on Tight Supply (yahoo.com) 1

ArchieBunker writes: Texas electricity prices soared almost 100-fold as a high number of power-plant outages raised concerns of a potential evening shortfall.

Spot prices at the North Hub, which includes Dallas, jumped to more than $3,000 a megawatt-hour just before 7 p.m. local time, versus about $32 at the same time Tuesday, according to data from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

This morning, Ercot, as the state’s main grid operator is known, issued a “watch” for a potential capacity reserve shortage from about 7-9 p.m., meaning the buffer of spare supplies could fall to low enough levels to call on back-up generation, cancel or delay outages or curb usage.

The conditions are the tightest of the year so far and raises the risk of prices rising to the $5,000 cap — which they last did on April 16, when Ercot also warned of a potential shortfall. Unusually hot weather in the region has boosted demand for cooling and lowered the efficiency of many power plants. Wind output has also fallen from a day earlier and there are more outages.

“Ercot has not called for conservation this evening,” it said by email. “The grid is operating under normal conditions at this time.”

That subscription is going up 43%, from £34.99 to £49.99 per device, per year, for basic plan customers.

Its customers appear not to to agree.
