Chrome 83 Released With Enhanced Privacy Controls, Tab Groups Feature (zdnet.com) 20

Google has released today version 83 of its Chrome web browser, one of the most feature-packed Chrome updates released since the browser's initial launch back in 2009. From a report: Today's v83 release includes a slew of new features. These include enhanced privacy controls, new settings for managing cookie files, a new Safety Check option, support for tab groups, new graphics for web form elements, a new API for detecting barcodes, and a new anti-XSS security feature, among many many others. The reason why Chrome 83 includes so many features is because Google canceled the Chrome 82 release due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. As a result, some of the Chrome 82 features were pushed into Chrome 83, while others were rescheduled for later this year.

Companies like Google, Microsoft and Apple cannot be trusted with privacy/security.

  • Was concerned, didn't know if they were to assist piracy or prevent it.
  • Why didn't this come on by default? It's not like the feature is somehow intrusive.

    • It should not by default modify the environment in a destructive manner. Determining whether an option is destructive or not requires a simple assessment of whether it changes anything about ordinary operation. Since tab groups are a destructive feature (they modify core functionality and force users to adapt) they are enabled only at user discretion. This is a rare example of good software development practice! Are you here complaining about not having your user rights taken away in advance?

    • I would recommend you attempt to create a fully fresh profile on a fresh install of the new version before you determine whether the option "comes on by default" or not. It seems likely that since the option to enable was not present in your existing configuration the compatibility default (disabled) was used.
  • a new API for detecting barcodes

They are trying hard to emulate Netscape's bloat.

  • "the most feature-packed Chrome updates released since the browser's initial launch back in 2009" so no reason to update since it is just enhanced telemetry for google and pretend features as the bait and switch reason to upgrade.

    Just my 2 cents ;)

All the rest is done with Firefox ESR, with the relevant ad-ons for adblocking and anti-tracking.

So, for me, no reason not to upgrade. As I already did.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but since the security patches are bundled with the "pretend features" and the "enhanced telemetry", I'd wager you are better off upgrading than using an unpatched version of chrome.

Or, if you are so disenchanted with chrome, follow my lead and move to another browser. Can be brave, can be opera, can be firefox, safary, edgium...

  • Wow, I think software development gets us somewhere?

But I admit, I have seen the future, in the past, in Opera 1X.XX not Chropera!

And Firefox will get this too? Or a decent bookmark management and a light weight eMail-Client totally satisfying the customers?

Sorry for the sarcasm, but if this is "news" then our current browsers do lack good features and have an abundance of crap features.

I have "Tab Groups" and "Tab Groups Collapse" enabled. and tab groups work, but the collapse feature doesn't.

Left-clicking on a tab group name is supposed to collapse that tab group, but it acts the same as right-clicking it and doesn't collapse the tab.

    This is on Windows 10.

  • Why cant I have the tabs on the left instead of at the top?

Each new tab reduces the amount of title visible in the window. Having a simple left window to show more of the title and more tabs. I had a firefox extension that could do this.

  • An option was added back in to display the full URL instead of hiding the protocol or "trivial" subdomains. No more extensions or startup parameters required.

Enable the flag chrome://flags/#omnibox-context-menu-show-full-urls [chrome] and right click the Omnibox to show the context menu with the option to always show the full URL.

I guess we can file that one in the peculiar design choices folder right next to "Move the option to show the website certificate to the developer tools" and "Remove 'close other tabs' op
    • Do you know when they changed those last two things back because right now for me it's two clicks to view the certificate from the omnibox chip and the "Close other tabs" option is in the context menu still?

      • I don't remember the exact date. The "close other tabs" was fairly recent and they very quickly reverted it. The certificate thing was a while back. I think that was when they redesigned Chrome to the whole big button look (or I guess you could say more touch screen friendly UI).
  • "...Giving users the ability to delete a cookie on a per-site basis lets users debug broken login experiences without having to clear cookies on all sites" (TFA).
Maybe the Linux version has always been different, but I've been using this feature for ages in Chrome < 83.
  • software_reporter_tool.exe - Grinds some PCs to a halt, looks at everything on your PC, and then feeds the data back to Google.

Trying to be happy is like trying to build a machine for which the only specification is that it should run noiselessly.

Working...
