Super Smash Brothers Wii, Featuring Solid Snake 292

mcc writes "In a surprise news conference this evening, Nintendo unexpectedly revealed Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, and released a promo video of the title. Smash Bros. Brawl will feature online play; a Nintendog item that blocks your view of the playfield by jumping up on the screen and demanding to be petted; bizarre Dragonball Z style superattacks; your choice of traditional Gamecube or motion-sensing Revmote control; and new characters in the form of Samus (without the suit), Meta Knight, Kid Icarus (!), and... Konami's Solid Snake, complete with a cardboard box he hides in. The only bad news is despite earlier reports it would be a launch title, Smash Bros. Brawl will not be out until 2007."

From the Wikipedia article [wikipedia.org] on it:
Japanese fans are currently being asked to submit their desired characters and themes to Nintendo's website, the most popular of which will be incorporated into the game. It is currently unknown if this will eventually be opened for overseas fans as well.
The site where you can vote [smashbros.com] (Japanese only I guess) and the IGN article [ign.com] on it.

The XBox 360 had a mild welcome in Japan ... Is Nintendo playing favorites in order to win a solid monopoly on the Japanese market?

Maybe I'm just jealous. I want to vote for Bub & Bob (Bubble Bobble [wikipedia.org]) as a counter pair to fight those damned Ice Climbers!

That doesn't seem to be true from what I can see. The following is taken from the article at IGN.

    http://revolution.ign.com/articles/707/707504p1.ht ml [ign.com]

Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.

"We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been," said Sakurai. "The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."

    • Just because iy doesn't use the motion sensing feature doesn't mean it can't use the remote control. Chances are they won't require you to have a gamecube controller (or any accessories that aren't included) in order to play the game.

Its looking very likly they will include atleast one "classic" controller with the console. But for many games the GC controller might be better. Am i the only one who LOVES button layout for the GC controller?
        • Actually, I love the GCN controller, too. And they're sturdy, too. I've broken PS2 controllers easily, but I've had my GCN controllers longer. Other than needing the occasional cleaning with alcohol, they work as well as the day I got them.

And am I the only one who did a spit take when he read this headline? Solid Snake? Jesus Christ, Nintendo, I get it. I swear, I will be standing in line to get a Wii, whenever it is released. Really. You don't need to persuade me anymore.

IGN's quote is taken out of context. Gamespot's [gamespot.com] is more in detail.

Another question was presented to Sakurai. "How will Super Smash Bros. Brawl take advantage of the Wii controller?" The designer said he had been working with different ideas, and had found that too much use of the controller's pointing and motion-sensor functions was not a good thing. He then dropped a hint, saying gamers may not want to throw away their old GameCube controllers, which the Wii supports. Sakurai then said he wants to support the console, but offer something different than other Wii games.

He's not saying that you can't play it with the Wii controller. Just that it probably won't use many (or any) functions of it. Keep in mind that SSB doesn't really need much more than an analog stick and two buttons, which the controller and nunchaku have.

And if that's all you use, you could use a GameCube controller as well, if you felt like it.

    • Those comments about the motion-sensitive controller not being good for this signature game are kind of interesting. What title in Nintendo's own stable seems like it's meant more for a sort of wild, frenetic party atmosphere? Super Smash Brothers should involve some smashing, and yet here's the developer saying it gets in the way of the game?

At least he said the "too much" part. Hopefully people who use the Wii controller will have some sort of fun with it and N's just working on getting things just so.

      • Well, keep in mind that this is a sequel to a very successful and well regarded franchise. If they changed it too much, it would no longer be a Smash Bros. game, it'd be it's own beast, even if it contained the same characters and was named similarly.

Perhaps there is a lot of potential for a game with a similar premise, which uses the Wii controller in some crazy ways, but that's not where they decided to take this game. I'm all for innovation, but sometimes it's a good idea not to throw away what already w

Recent developments sure lead me to believe that Nintendo has become the next Apple. They have followed the same path over the past two decades, from a strong company with a very popular product who is rapidly downtrodden, only to wallow in their own despair for years. Thankfully for those who remember them in their heyday, they manage a holy redemption and become leaders in their field once again.

It looks like they both used the same strategy, too. Both Apple and Nintendo have taken the route of offering trendy, innovative products of a very high quality. While their competitors aim only for the most powerful system (which will soon by eclipsed by PCs in a year or less), Apple and Nintendo both produce hardware and software products that maximize the user's experience.

    • You forgot the fact that Nintendo doesn't overcharge for all of its products. It seems with Apple you get charged an extra 20% per "i" included in the product name. If Nintendo followed that trend...i'd probably still buy their products.
      • Funny, am I the only one who remembers the price on a NES dropping after Nintendo was hammered (antitrust?) for its price fixing practices?

Maybe Nintendo doesn't over charge right this moment, but I'd bet good money that if they found themselves in Apple's shoes (popular boutique product recognized as the "BMW" of its niche), they'd charge a premium too. Remember that Nintendo is the underdog in the US market right now--they're probably willing to narrow their margins in order to win back the very mindshar

Nintendo's a one hundred and sixteen -year old company.

Nintendo has always made sure to expand its market to ensure that it's not ever in any danger. They own the Seattle Mariners, branched out into the taxi business as well as sex hotels [wikipedia.org] and vacuum manufacturing.

Video games really made them a household name, but Nintendo has always been worried about being tied to a too-small portion of the populace. Then again, you don't get to be a 116 year old company without that worry.

I hope the Wii does well. This is not because I am a fan of the company (though they've done great work which has brought me much pleasure), but for a more pragmatic reason: I intend to buy one, and want lots of third-party support.

This is excellent news for people like me, and presumably Nintendo itself, because:
    a) SSB has become a marquee title for Nintendo, and it will be good to have this out in that first 6-months-to-a-year period
    b) this gives everyone an early answer on the question of GC controllers. Namely, on games where it's appropriate, we CAN expect the option of using the GC controller.

Though my budget for games seems to be much smaller than a lot of the people on /., I think I will be able to scrape up the funds for a Wii and a game every couple months. The way things are heading, I will have a huge supply of desirable games to choose from.

Don't get me wrong, I'm porbably as psyched as everybody else that's ever played an MGS game to see Solid Snake making an appearance in Super Smash Bros. But considering all of the MGS games are either exclusive to, or arrive a year or more sooner on Sony systems (including their handhelds), is it wise to place him in Super Smash? Doesn't that sort of promote him/MGS, which in turn indirectly promotes PS3 and PSP (where those games appear)? Of course, on the other hand, maybe it's more likely to motivate the MGS fans who were plannning on buying a PS3/PSP and MGS games any way to ALSO purchase a Wii so they can play yet another game with Solid Snake... I guess I can see it going either way, but I really wish Konami/Kojima could show Nintendo some more love (since that's where he got his start) and do at least ONE exclusive Metal Gear game for the Wii...

Apparently they just didn't want it on the XBox. But he has already appeared on the Gamecube with Twin Snakes (a gorgeous remake of the orignal Metal Gear Solid).
      • I'm aware of Twin Snakes, but again, that's a remake (and Snake appearing years after he appears on Sony's console). I'm looking for something more along the lines of more than just a nod to Nintendo--something like an exclusive Metal Gear game or at least a Metal Gear game that appears before (or even a simulataneous launch with the Playstation version). And there HAS been a Metal Gear game for XBox as well (which was also a remake of the original Metal Gear Solid--I know it was referred to as MGS 1.5 whil
        • Well, there's also the fact that the original two Metal Gear games appeared on NES. Yes, you could easily argue it was due to NES supremecy at the time. But you're right, it's about the money. They'll make games for the most popular systems. And it looks like PS3 isn't going to be as popular as its little brother.
        • The MGS game on the XBox was NOT the first one, but rather a sort of "director's cut" of MGS2. It was subtitled "Substance", which is part of why the MGS3 special edition is called "Subsistence".
    • I think it'd attract more PS fans than lose Nintendo fans. There may be a few MGS fans that will buy any and all MGS related stuff but there are probably no Nintendo fans that will up and buy all games related to characters in SSB. Honestly, I don't think it'll have much effect either way but, if any, it would be more PS going toward the Nintendo game (especially since the Wii is likely to be cheap).

This is great. If they could push this out before August, we'd have a perfect opportunity to tie the game to a movie that is completely unrelated.

    What you'd have to do:
    1) Have Solid Snake as one of the fighters
    2) Choose one of the levels where you battle on Fox's ship
    3) Have everyone shout "SNAKE'S ON A PLANE"
    4) Profit/giggle madly

Jokes aside, this looks awesome. Well worth the wait for online connectivity.

One thing I don't see a lot of comments about is the "Super Smashes" (my term, not theirs). If you watch the trailer, at one point Mario grabs a sphere with the SSB logo on it, and does a little "charge up" animation. After which, he unleashes either a HUGE flame on everyone, or unleashes a thousand flame punches (I couldn't really tell). Kirby is also shown charging, and then we see Mario in a pot. Link appears to have some sort of mutli-slash that creates Triforce images around the character.

Most likely, these would all be activated by the "Super Smash Sphere" (again, my term) which would be a very rare item. These look to have a lot of potential.

Finally, some predictions for other new characters:
    -Waluigi
-Captain Olmar (he'd control a small herd of Pikmin or something)
-Paper Mario (he'd have the hammer, be able to turn side ways, would float down)
    -hopefully no more Pokemon
