I always though IBM hardware was boring and dull office appliances. That couldn't be further from the truth. Their enterprise hardware is well engineered and so different from anything in the PC (or even old UNIX) world. You can order a new mainframe today that will natively run binaries from that S/360 machine. The AS/400 is another architecture that is utterly alien when compared to everything else. You want to talk about hypervisors and virtualization? IBM was doing that at the hardware level in the 1970s. Do yourself a favor and read up on this old hardware, its fascinating.

To me, the mind-boggling part is Google actually have 552 domains for tracking you.

Or, IOW, you need to block 552 domains to have some effect in stopping Google from digitally stalking you.

It's fun to see them after they explode; sometimes they become literal paper confetti. The downside is when the exploding cap damages nearby components.

Or they might target the ones parked either side of you.

Seriously, these butt-ugly things are going to sell in the hundreds of thousands, possibly millions. 150k are pre-ordered already, most of those high-end options. In two months people will get past the gag reflex upon seeing one, and in two years they will just be "meh".

I don’t think most modern US police officers consider protecting and serving their highest priority. I think that police officers, being human beings, place their own safety, job security, income, and self-interests, over that of the general public. Try as we have, we’ve never been able to reliably train other humans to be self-less. It’s simply not in our DNA. The best we can do is train people to act like they put the interests of others above their own, and this illusion can be maintained for awhile so long as we don’t look too closely.

This is also why things like moderation, generally, falls way short of its goals. The human ego has great trouble assuming good-faith when faced with opinions that differ from one’s own. Instead, the psychological comfort of "no one can sincerely disagree with me, they most just be trolling, since deep down I’m sure they must agree with me”, is just too hard to resist.

Human self-centeredness governs all interpersonal interactions.

If you're driving up into the mountains, then you can probably regen all the way back down, making the solar panel nice, but not essential.

I consider phonics to be a stupid concept. Personally, I don't generally look at individual words as pictures, I look at groups of words and entire sentences as pictures, and I read very quickly. I have read thousands and thousands of books, and I couldn't even begin to estimate how many books my reading online equates too.

Though, I do occasionally come across a problem where I know a word because I've read it, and then I try to speak to people about it who are educated in the subject rather than self taught, and I pronounce the word improperly and look foolish even though I have a perfect understanding of what it means and how to use it.

Which is just another black mark against the phonics concept as far as I'm concerned.

If you want to read well, you can't say, "It was hard, so I didn't do it, and it's the education systems fault." and expect to be taken seriously. Perhaps you're just lazy and stupid.

That was my whole point. It is a Constitutional (5th Amendment) issue, so SCOTUS presumably has authority over State or lower courts. Those lower court rulings should not have any relevance.

(I refer here to mainstream legal convention; some people argue that Constitutional issues only apply to the Federal government, despite Amendment 14, Section 1: "No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States.")

Oops... my mistake. I see that it was a Federal Appeals Court which actually ruled on the password issue, not SCOTUS. Still, it is very clearly a 5th Amendment issue.

As for upskirt photos, as abhorrent as most people (I assume) find the practice, if I were a judge I'd have to take that on a case-by-case basis. If someone were sitting in bleachers in a short dress across from someone else and presenting a clear view, I think I'd have to rule that it was public, and therefore allowable. No matter how many may disagree on moral grounds, we have long-standing legal precedent (and for very good reasons) that what is public is fair game.
