Quora Launches Poe, a Way To Talk To AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT (techcrunch.com) 25

Signaling its interest in text-generating AI systems like ChatGPT, Quora this week launched a platform called Poe that lets people ask questions, get instant answers and have a back-and-forth dialogue with AI chatbots. TechCrunch reports: Short for "Platform for Open Exploration," Poe -- which is invite-only and currently only available on iOS -- is "designed to be a place where people can easily interact with a number of different AI agents," a Quora spokesperson told TechCrunch via text message. "We have learned a lot about building consumer internet products over the last 12 years building and operating Quora. And we are specifically experienced in serving people who are looking for knowledge," the spokesperson said. "We believe much of what we've learned can be applied to this new domain where people are interfacing with large language models."

At launch, Poe provides access to several text-generating AI models, including ChatGPT. (OpenAI doesn't presently offer a public API for ChatGPT; the Quora spokesperson refused to say whether Quora has a partnership with OpenAI for Poe or another form of early access.) Poe's like a text messaging app, but for AI models -- users can chat with the models separately. Within the chat interface, Poe provides a range of different suggestions for conversation topics and use cases, like "writing help," "cooking," "problem solving" and "nature." Poe ships with only a handful of models at launch, but Quora plans to provide a way for model providers -- e.g. companies -- to submit their models for inclusion in the near future.
"We think this will be a fun way for people to interact with and explore different language models. Poe is designed to be the best way for someone to get an instant answer to any question they have, using natural conversation," the spokesperson said. "There is an incredible amount of research and development going into advancing the capabilities of these models, but in order to bring all that value to people around the world, there is a need for good interfaces that are easy to use. We hope we can provide that interface so that as all of this development happens over the years ahead, everyone around the world can share as much as possible in the benefits."

My platform is called Ho and it does the same thing, but all the answers are basically "You ain't paying me for this so do your own google search."

Sounds more like it should be called "No"

    • If there ever was a concern AI would wipe out all of humanity, this is it. Connecting tbe Quora userbase to an AI?? I got so tired of all the fucking retarded questions in my inbox I tried my best to get banned. These fucking retards couldnt tell you how a pencil and an eraser works. Even I think they should be lobotomized. An AI is bound to extrapolate the entirety of humanity needs to be purged if we let it get exposed to Quora.
  • ChatGPT has become more and more popular, so there are too many topics to debate about it The highlight is the comparison between ChatGPT and Google. Now ChatGPT is available on Google Extension and you can use 2 in 1 xD https://chrome.google.com/webs... [google.com]
    • ChatGPT doesn't know if anything's true or not. LLMs just reformulate & regurgitate responses according to statistical linguistic probabilities. I'm guessing OpenAI have been very selective in what language samples to feed into their LLM so the answers come out as mostly true & within their own (biased) parameters, according to statistical probability. However, it often gets things very wrong, especially when you prompt it to elaborate with how & why questions.

Then Googling isn't much better b
      • BTW, there are these people called "experts" who sometimes write books about stuff that are usually pretty good.

The problem comes when you try to pick a reliable expert on a controversial matter (even if the controversy isn't at the expert level).

E,g. a question about cosmology will probably assume that relativity and the big bang model are correct. There's a controversy at the expert level, but it's muted. And there's a controversy at the superficial level, but it tends to accept the dominant cosmological model.

So if you're trying to decide which expert to pick, you likely will get one that ignores the MOND model,

          • In every scientific field, there's accepted, uncontroversial knowledge & as yet unresolved, uncertain knowledge. The debate is usually healthy & productive & most academics enjoy engaging with each other over differing interpretations of phenomena. In science, disagreement & differing opinions are good. It's good to keep knowledge alive like this.

to a certain (and unknown) extent, neither do the self-declared experts on Quora. Or Wikipedia etc.

Not happy with human-generated wrong answers, they have decided to enroll bots in the work actively.

It has launched, or maybe not. The app immediately declares you are on a waiting list. Deleted it, maybe I'll check it again some day.

Also, why would I want to talk like ChatGPT, regardless of whether I'm talking to AI Chatbots or not?

      • by HiThere ( 15173 )

Well, they don't need everyone, and a lot of people *do* want to talk to ChatGPT. Why is probably variable.

FWIW, I talked with Eliza for while. (Well, it was a grossly simplified version of Eliza. but it was interesting...for a few hours [over several days].)

  • It's not clear to me why I would want to use Quora for this. Signing up with OpenAI for an account is painless, and afterwards you have direct access to ChatGPT. It's not like this is difficult.

I guess you can argue that they will ultimately unify several different bots under the same interface. However, if I want to compare different bots, I won't want to see their results filtered through someone else's UI.

It looks like they're just trying to boost their popularity by piggybacking on other people's wo

  • The Quora Prompt Generator, which Quora uses to generate traffic, is the epitome of stupidity - which means something in a site like Quora, where (purportedly) humans often formulate the most ridiculous and stupid questions.
  • ... which they try to lure people into installing, most certainly in order to harvest data and to annoy with advertisements. I see no reason to try this, at all.
  • If they were serious, they wouldn't have developed it on Tonka Toy computers.

  • I tried SeeBorg, Rbot's markov, Alice, etc. They're OK. I wonder if there are any better ones. :)
