Walmart Seeks Crypto Expert To Oversee Digital Currency Push (bloomberg.com) 36

Walmart is looking to hire a cryptocurrency expert to develop a blockchain strategy, joining a growing number of major corporations exploring the viability of digital currencies such as Bitcoin. From a report: The position will be responsible for "developing the digital currency strategy and product roadmap" and identifying "crypto-related investment and partnerships," according to a job posting Sunday on the retail giant's website. The senior director will be based in Walmart's corporate offices in Bentonville, Arkansas.

While Walmart's specific intentions weren't immediately clear, the job description refers to the "broad set of payment options for its customers" in stores and online. The company didn't immediately respond to a request for additional information. The recruitment effort by Walmart comes several weeks after a similar job posting by rival Amazon.com, indicating that the biggest retailers in the U.S. may soon let customers use cryptocurrencies to pay for their purchases. PayPal Holdings began letting select customers of its Venmo app buy, sell and hold digital currencies earlier this year and expanded the effort last week.

  • After Apple announced Apple Pay, and then there was also Samsung Pay and Google Wallet...Wal-Mart did this super convoluted QR code thing, that then got turned into a dedicated app...and nobody uses it.

I'm completely sure this time it will be different.

    • Google Wallet was pointless because nobody wanted to use. Bitcoin is so technically inept that it can't actually be used for anything. So this time is different in one regard: besides the usual fails, there is an additional fail on a higher level, where even if the other fails were not failing, it would still fail. This is good for Bitcoin.

    • Walmart can't even get NFC in it's stores and they want to try crypto? LOL.
      • Somebody told Wally what he really needed was NFT. Wally knows that cybers are great, and cryptos are even better. But how does it all work? That's what he needs a Senior Director of Crypto to tell him.

But where to find such a knowledgeable, experienced individual? It'll probably take 7 figures. Most of them have already found good jobs in marketing on Slashdot, or getting third-rappers to promote Pussycoin. [youtu.be] All the cryptowizards have been snapped up.

    • That uses one of the credit card back ends and a simple exchange to do an extremely roundabout way of paying with crypto currencies. Cryptocurrencies are way too volatile for any retailer to touch hands on. A few of them have dabbled in the 10-ft pole approach that involves using a payment processor who uses a convoluted system to offload the risk. My guess is Walmart will implement this not for purchases of things from Walmart but for purchases from the third party sellers they allowed to sell on Walmart.c

All right, let's unpack this. Walmart has identified their biggest competitive challenge. Their number one corporiate priority. Their major strategy going forward. They're betting the company on it. What is it?

    Blockchains. And digital currencies.

    [clap clap]

How brilliant! That'll leave Amazon in the dust! Amazon is so stupid! They have no digital currency. And they have no blockchain to parade around their corporate headquarters.

Walmart's firmly established on its track of evolving into the next Sears & Roebuck.

  • I didn't look at the job posting, but Walmart has been studying blockchain for quite some time. There are many uses for the technology other than digital currencies.

  • While Walmart has a wide customer base, I can't really imagine what segment will be in a position to use (or want to use) Bitcoin for their purchases. Also, can't imagine paying w/Bitcoin will speed up the checkout line...

    • Well Home Depot has integrated PayPal payments. I don't know if anyone uses it or even if I used it.

But I know that Home Depot payment process is maybe the best I've seen~~everything is fast and clear, you can look up your past orders on the same credit card, points accumulate even if you don't have an account with them, etc.

So if HD was adding some more payment options I'm sure it would work out great and not be distracting. Maybe Walmart is in the same category.

  • Is an RFP for crooks and grifters as much as it is an RFP for genuine work.

      It's a fishing trip.

Interview blockchain experts with probing questions: "If you were in this position, how would YOU use blockchain to boost Walmart profits?"

After a dozen interviews, Walmart will have a fair idea of whether there's anything worthwhile in it, and it costs them nothing for the information.

Nope. The smart money will all be moving into Wallycoin.
If you like I can help you convert all your old worthless bitcoin, into shiny new Wallycoin.

Meanwhile, there's a GoFundMe account to pay the moving expenses of Biden and Harris, as Trump has been reinstated as president last Friday.
