U.N. Backs Down on Partnership With Chinese Firm for 75th Anniversary (foreignpolicy.com) 31

The United Nations has backtracked on a pact with the Chinese telecommunications giant Tencent Holdings to provide videoconferencing and text services for the international organization's 75th anniversary, following backlash from U.S. officials and lawmakers as well as human rights groups. From a report: Critics claim the arrangement rewards a company that has enabled Beijing's digital surveillance efforts and stifled free speech on the internet in China. Late last month, the U.N. sparked a political firestorm when it announced plans to enlist the help of the Chinese social media and video game giant to serve as a platform for an online discussion with millions of netizens around the world on the future of the U.N. in the run-up to its 75th anniversary observance. Over the following weeks, U.S. lawmakers and human rights advocates pressed the U.N. to ditch the deal, saying it would tarnish the international organization's reputation as a champion of free expression and human rights.

"U.N. Backs Down on Partnership With Chinese Firm for 75th Anniversary" makes it sound like the U.N. caved in to the Chinese firm. The U.N. didn't "back down" at all, it "back tracked," "cancelled," or "withdrew" but it certainly didn't back down. Thanks to the CCP virus, we're starting to see the beginning of a growing rethink of how business with China is being done. If the CCP thinks things will return to "business as usual" when the virus crisis has passed, they will be in for a rude awakening.

That is the plain absolute truth. I respected the US from the day the Berlin wall fell until the Ukraine aid-for-domestic-political-favors scandal was exposed. At least Iraq was invaded for humanitarian reasons, and then justifiable (but later found false) military ones. There wasn't even an attempt to hide direct graft and corruption in Ukraine in subservience to the greater enemy of Russia. Now I have nothing but contempt for its leadership and must agree with those who found greater systemic faults over

        • But Obama/Biden offering no weaponry as aid was better?
    • ...they will be in for a rude awakening.

Having had two months to prepare for a pathogen with its genome mapped, yet suffering more deaths per capita than a nation with a parity of GDP, but four times the people, should be sufficient "awakening" to sate anyone's sense of proportion.

But, as it's said, you will do you.

Here's the funny thing; people are alleging WHO and other UN agencies kiss up to China for $. If it was JUST for dollars, then shouldn't they be basically be offering to be Trump's side-chick every Saturday night? (The US at 22% of UN budget dwarfs China's 12.5% fwiw the EU as a collective are over 30% but whether they're reporting together or not pretty much changes hourly depending o
