    I've been running it under the Berlin windowing system on my GNU/Hurd box for 12 hours, and it r0x...

    Its really helped my productivity. I've got an amazing amount of work done today.

      This is something that pisses me off about many free software projects these days -- artificially low version numbers. It always used to be the case that 1.0 was the first public release of something. You'd reserve 0.x for a limited beta program, typically only lasting a couple of months at most to shake out any major bugs before release. But nowadays, it seems like the vast majority of free software is pre-1.0. You can't reasonably claim that Enlightenment

        Or maybe proprietary software has inflated version numbers. Version 1.0 doesn't have all the features that the product *should* have. Version 2.0 doesn't change the file format or indicate a complete rewrite.

        For Chrissake, look at the version numbers on Illustrator or Photoshop.

    I remember in years past, you had to really look closely at a /. story on April 1 because the fake stories were so well-woven. This year, they aren't even trying and even worse, they're posting dupes!

        • Japan uses 4/1 also, but they prefix the year. That is the best way, with 0 padding on the month and day so sorting is easy. 04/01/2003 is just messed up, 01/04/2003 is a bit better, at least it is consistant in ordering. But 2003/04/01 is the best for any big endian number system.
    • I don't know the Gentoo RPM one almost made me have a heart attack until I realized it was April 1st...but oh well :)
    • Pay more attention my friend! The Whitespace and the Peter Jackson/King Kong ones are real. No joke. I've never seen the wool pulled over the /. masses eyes as easily!

    • I agree, these types of jokes are so much better if you can put up an actual file for download.

      I remember the lzip [sourceforge.net] (lossy zip) compression files from a few years ago...that was one of the best April Fools Day joke I've ever seen. Check out some of the files in the tarball, README, for instance. The idea of lossy file compression could work out in the future though..if only they could fix that blue-shift...

    Providing a clickable like in the article which immediately shows the story to be false just isn't clever enought to be funny

    Wow! I just grabbed the tarball, and did the autoconf, configure, make jig. I must say I am impressed! First of all, the size of the installation is pretty small compared to all other environments. AND... this really beats the pants off of KDE and GNOME. As usual, there is lots of innovation. All the window widgets can be moved around to suit the needs and tastes of the user rather than forcing them to use one style. They've added the ability to incorporate scents into the themes! (I am using the Evergreen scent right now... Ahhh fresh!) But what's impressed me the most so far is the predictive nature of the interface. There is some mechanism that Raster has worked out to detect the readiness potential in your brain before you actually click on something. This results in menus and objects performing operations just before you actually decide to utilize those menus and objects. Pretty slick! So far it's been dead on every time. as I think, Mozilla is loading up web pages and links in extra tabs behind this page. Kind of interesting to find out what you are going to look at just a fraction of a second before you realize it. The file manager is JUST INCREDIBLE!!! No more of that silly hierarchical jazz... Now we finally have a file manager that works just like we think. For any document you create, the files are offloaded to paper hardcopies. This results in a more tangible object with a limited, but pretty reliable user interface. To re-open and edit the file, You just slam it on the flatbed and E 1.0 will automatically scan and OCR it back into the application of your choice! How cool is that? the best thing is that you no longer have to worry about magnetic media failure with regard to your docs. Ahhh.. I think I'm in love! Enlightenment 1.0, you light up my life!

This is my usual rant about Slashdot articles announcing that Some-Random-Name has reached Version N+1 or added Some-Generic-Feature-Like-Themes without saying what the product actually is or does. (Of course, people who don't know Enlightenment's version history won't get the April Fools' Joke here...)
  • I would have expected better co-operation on this prank. I'm guessing Rasterman went to the effort of editiing the webpage in the new section. The stable version on the top of the page is/was still listed as 0.16.5 and CVS as 0.17. That was a dead give away.

    Now, if this story gets posted tommorrow then I will be happy since it will presumably be true. Otherwise, the mods are definately slacking off.

  • Apparently I am the sucker born every minute. I actually bought this for a whole 20 seconds while I clicked over to the Enlightenment website and stared at it in confusion.

    They don't have to be realistic (take the BBC's Spaghetti Harvest prank, which still ranks No. 1 of all pranks, for all its age), but they do need to be convincing enough to hook the victims, and diverting enough that they'll want to stay hooked.


    I think geeks need to improve in this department, somewhat. The Spaghetti Harvest was a work of sheer creative brilliance, despite the simplicity of the sketch and the simplicity of the props.


    These are the kinds of pranks that work well, and are remembered. So simple, it's "got to be true", without assuming that the audience is as simple as the prank.


    I'll give this year's attempts a 3/5 for effort, 4/5 for volume, and 2/5 for the "got to be true" factor. Hey, that's not a bad score, but it does show that this is an area that needs practice.

    The Hurd was certified gold and was adopted by Microsoft as the replacement kernel for Windows Server 2003.

    Asked whether a name change may be on the horizon for the Windows line, Bill Gates thought for a second and replied: "Yes. Yes, I think there might. How does Gnudows sound?"


    Microsoft shareholders could not be reached for comment.
