LG Appoints New CEO To Lead Its Beleaguered Electronics Division (engadget.com) 14

LG has appointed a new CEO to lead its electronics business. Starting December 1st, current Chief Strategy Officer William Cho will take over for Bong-seok Kwon as the CEO of LG Electronics. From a report: Meanwhile, according to The Korea Herald, Kwon will head up LG's main holding company. Cho has been with LG Electronics since 1987. Prior to his most recent role, he served as the president of LG Canada, and later had the same role at LG Australia and LG USA. Cho is about to take the reins of LG Electronics at an inflection point for the company. It recently shut down its mobile division in July after the unit failed to make a profit in 23 consecutive quarters. At this point, LG Electronics is probably best known for its TVs and monitors, but there too it faces tough competition from Samsung and a variety of Chinese competitors.

If I remember correctly, LG started the whole "TV spies on you" fashion, back in 2013. I decided I won't let any LG product darken my door again, and haven't seen any reason to change my decision. Even if they change the CEO, I'm sure the spying will continue, or get even worse.

Their OLED TVs are really good - afaik, some of the best available right now. I got one semi recently - and aside from a initial firmware update, it's not been connected to the internet since. I don't care for much of the 'smart' functions built into TVs - I've got other devices connected to the TV that do a far better job of that. The only thing I want from a TV is good picture quality and LG OLEDs tick that box.

Granted, LG still got some of my money despite being a shady company -- but hopefully they

I didn't realize they broke it out that way, so who's going to lead its "Regular" Electronics Division? :-)

LG. Life's Good. Until you buy one.
    • Literally every LG product I have ever owned has failed on me. Nexus 4 (LG E960) and the last optical drive I had fail are the most recent examples. That's when I gave up on their shit forever.

      • I've always had good experiences with LG. Just wish they had stayed the course with their phones instead of becoming yet another 'Let's remove all the features and see how close we can copy eachother!' manufacturer. I'll be using my V20 with headphone jack, SD card, removable batter, IR blaster, and 2nd screen until it physically fails. Not a single phone from the past couple years has all of those (not counting the 2nd screen either, just the rest). Not one.

No LG TV will be considered until LG officially renounces collection of viewing habits for all past, present and future TV models.

    • I bought an LG dumb TV and it doesn't track shit. Has a nice picture, though, the composite video input works great with my non-standards-compliant AVR microcontroller TV out projects, it has a 3.5mm jack in the back for serial remote control. Dual HDMI inputs. USB that probably can play media files, but I only use it to provide power to my digital antenna.

It even has a politely muted logo on the front that is nearly invisible.

My only complaint was that it didn't have a headphone jack, or audio out, which s

LG Fan here... who recently bought a samsung TV, and moved from LG mobile to samsung also. LG we only need a couple of things, but you just wont listen. 1) you need tougher privacy limitations. See the other comments 2) you need higher quality. My last LG tv lost the abaility to turn on or off from the remote just after warranty expired. My LG G4 phone was a real winner, untill all of them died while still in warranty loosing you future sales through the carriers. I used to trust LG to outlast a samsung, but you really need to work on steeping the product reliability up a notch. 3) support. Since my G4 was replaced under warranty I decided to keep running it. I couldnt because security in android was broken and you would just push out an baseline security update. If you did that i'd probably have bought a G6 a year later. 4) no more wierd experimental hardware. The G4 was a winner initially because it was a normal enough phone with a different and classy look and high quality components. The G5 wasnt because.. half the phone unplugs and you can connect proprietry extensions? Nah thats too weird, its obvious its never going to sell. Please fix the above and make good quality high end gear thats supported properly and without outlandish features that scare everyone away (and where there are bootloaders, unlockable please).
  • Some years ago LG sold me a 720p TV marketed as a 1080p TV. They have been dead to me ever since.
  • Every single LG electornics product I have seen has been complete trash with a lot of unfulfilled potential.
