    • by MBCook ( 132727 )

No kidding. I don't expect high quality, but this entire "article" could be summed up in three pictures. The first would show the old and new controllers, the second the dev box, and the third a screenshot of the interface.

Those three pictures already exist and are on the 'net.

I'm used to somewhat pointless articles, but this is a new low. With a title like "A Look Inside the PlayStation 3" I expected someone managed to get the cover off a retail or development box (specifically the latter based on the su

    So Zonk didn't RTFA either?

    • Well, when I saw the Hamster cage, I have to admit, that was kind of shocking.
      • The worst part was that the hamsters were sleeping on the job. I guess they're not excited about the release games.

It's hard to get hamsters excited about FPS games, considering their lack of opposable thumbs. And they're just not as keen on sports games, since they tend to huddle in their little Cell processor cages hoping not to get trampled by the football players.

So since you're implying the mouse isn't the optimal FPS controller, what is? Because I can say with damn near certainty and 8 years of experience that an analogue stick isn't.

the mouse isn't the optimal FPS controller, what is?

Subjectively, whatever device the user is most comfortable using is the optimal controller. The mouse and keyboard were not designed for games, but people had become very comfortable using them by the time 3D games came along, therefore this became the standard. Most great gamers play with a keyboard and mouse because that is what they've learned to use and feel comfortable with (and because they've bought into the smug snobbery of the "Real Gamers onl

Actually, they're incorrect. The optimal controller is a Light gun as it allows for more accurrate snap-shots on targets. Light guns are available for PCs (but haven't been in common circulation, especially for IBM PCs.)

But can you turn the camera with a light gun, other than with the aim-at-the-side-of-the-screen hack that Goldeneye 007 in R-trigger mode uses? Unless you can turn 180 degrees, jump, and fire a rocket at the same time, light guns aren't going to replace a mouse any time soon.

As a long-time (but dormant for a couple years now) FPSer, that statement actually sums up everything that I grew to dislike about FPS gaming.

Just exactly why should you be able to turn 180 degrees, jump, and fire a rocket (accurately!) at the same time? Picture trying to actually do this. Even if you're the stereotypical cybernetically enhanced supermarine capable of singlehan

That's what I said when I heard about the PS3 price too!
    • Apparently, when they heard about the price, the Japanese market said this: ...

Ever since I played Chrono Cross for the first time, I've been trying to figure out exactly how to say that.
      • by Jerf ( 17166 )
I can say it, but it's more of a gesture, really. You look your conversation partner (or whomever you're responding to) right in the eye, you inhale loudly, you lazily point your finger at them, and you exhale loudly and cut it off sharply, like you were going to say something. (You do those things in order, not all at once.)

Used sparingly it's good for a laugh every time it's even remotely appropriate.

The Wiimote is central to Nintendo's plans for the Wii. The PS3 controller, on the other hand... isn't so critical. Nintendo want the Wii to be to the Gamecube what the DS was to the GBA. Sony, OTOH, want the PS3 to be to the PS2 what the PS2 was to the PS1.

If Sony have to ship with standard-issue PS2 controllers, so be it; the motion sensor jobs will ship

I just hope they haven't turned their PS3 manufacturing over to the same guys that manufacture their notebook batteries.

  • I love how the controller takes the movement detection from the Wii, the "Guide" button from the 360 controller and the wireless ideas. They also changed some of the shoulder buttons to be more like trigger buttons..hmm..this controller is sounding more and more like..the 360 controller! Even their menu system sounds a lot like the 360's blade system. Oh well, "innovate" ideas that work well, that seems to be Sony's new motto.
    • The PS3 menu system is just like the PSP, as the article noted - the PSP shipped well before the 360.

As for the other features, even if Sony borrowed some of them is that not a good thing for gamers? I am happy to have Nintendo and Microsoft and Sony steal the best from each other because I as a consumer get to enjoy the results. Unless you are employed by one of them why does it bother you so to see elements of one design used in another?
      • by Shados ( 741919 )
You are correct. My only gripe, is that Sony stated a while back that Microsoft was just copycats stealing of their ideas.

While Microsoft is definately a copycat of extreme proportions... Sony really has no room to talk =P So, while its perfectly peachy that they steal stuff...its hypocrite like hell, thus gets attention.

Yeah cause, god forbid someone borrow the little dpad controller design from Nintendo or the concept of wireless controllers from (some 3rd party) or having a menu button (like most DVD players). I don't care if they borrow from each other; I care if they lie (we invented this, this is new!) and I care if they make it work well.

I'm pretty sure I haven't heard Sony claim they invented something new that wasn't in fact their own and from history I'd say they'll do a good job of making it all work together we

      New motto?

The PlayStation controller is the Super Nintendo controller with two shoulder buttons added and little wing things added to the front. (Really. The shape is practically identical, the button placement is identical, the only thing that's missing is the connected D-pad, making the PS controller suck and the SNES controller rock. The button coloring scheme is also surprisingly similar to the SNES controller, except with yellow replaced by pink.)

Hold on -- don't get ahead of yourself. The PS controller (at least, using my PS2 controller as a reference) is connected, but that's a bad thing (and likewise for the SNES controller). When I use it for DDR (yeah yeah, it's just to practice rhythm), I can see how the D-pad is all one piece so pushing one will pull the others down. The middle part is just covered up, that's all. "The first thing we can talk about is the controller. When we last saw the controller for the PlayStation 3, it was a shoddily put together, almost third party-like unit with ugly red sensors on the top and a lack of weight. However, in the redesigned version that is much closer to the model that will reach consumers, the controller has been weighted down with a considerable amount of 18 carat gold. The fans are folded origami, made from 3-ply $100 bills, rolled on the thighs of Cuban virgins. The model we tested had some problems maintaining sync at times, because of the impurities (elevated diamond content) in the Quartz crystal used, but we expect this problem to be solved in the budget bundle."
