The bigger the group of people who have access to resources that are to remain secret, the bigger the threat that the secret gets out. It just takes one link in the chain to break it, and only one to talk to render a key useless.

Or, in other ways, while breaking a key may be impossible, breaking a kneecap isn't.

Hadoop is good at generally running massive queries of tons of data in a relatively efficient amount of time. I say efficient and not fast, becuase the requests can vary from well structured for grid data sets to massive bloated ugly queries that would be massive bloated and ugly in any DBMS environment. If you want to talk about regulation, etc.. I think you're batrking up the wrong tree with Hadoop. If you're concerned with regulation, seed the DB with unique though meaningless data when importing and avoid all of those problems.

You're right, but it's not always the devices within the same product category. A lot of stuff that's in consumer devices begins life in very niche applications (e.g. military or medical devices) to get the first bit of R&D funding and then needs another big chunk to become cheap enough for consumer devices.

War? You mean, like, with weapons and shit?

Don't be silly. Today you don't go to a "hot" war with an enemy of similar strength, with a coequal opponent you go for an economic style of war. Literally so.

The goal is not to bomb them back into the stone age. Only to fleece them. I.e. pretty much what has been going on the past decade or so.

Welcome to the new war.

It's not clear that Apple could survive in isolation. A lot of their components are only as cheap as they are because of other lower-margin companies paying a big chunk of the R&D costs. When Apple was using PowerPC processors and were the only customer for IBM or Motorola for a particular chip, they found it very difficult to compete. They're designing their own ARM cores now, but they're benefitting enormously from the thriving ARM software ecosystem.
