That's a lie for good programmers, for mediocre ones, it might be true.

And, NAICT, it only applies to "tech industry" jobs. Every time I see a picture of a team working the Shuttle software, or the flight control software for a major civil airframe, etc... etc... it's older programmers. The "kids" are the minority.

I don't think you understand how amplification attacks work.

I wrote advisories on that more than 10 years ago, so please go ahead and lecture me.

Your home network should not allow a request with an IP that doesn't belong to it out. If I'm the router that connects 1.2.3.0/24 to the Internet, I shouldn't put a packet that claims it originates from 5.6.7.8 on the wire.

The only places where a package that isn't part of my network should be routed through is when my network is a transit network.

I know from my own experience how right you are, but that, exactly, is the problem. This "it didn't crash in 10 minutes, ship it" approach is utterly horrible. It's become industry standard instead of being taken out back to be shot, and that is a really serious problem.

People shouldn't be used to computers crashing - they should demand that they don't do so.

Prosecutors Raid LG Offices Over Alleged Vandalism of Samsung Dishwashers 87

As reported by Reuters, Korean manufacturing giant LG's Seoul headquarters have been raided over allegations that LG employees sabotaged dishwashers made by rival Samsung. The Samsung machines were "on display at two stores in September ahead of the IFA electronics show in Berlin." From the article: On Friday, investigators searched the Seoul offices of LG Elec's home appliance head, Jo Seong-jin, and others and secured documents and computer hard disks related to the IFA fair, Yonhap News Agency said. They also combed through LG Electronics' home appliance factory in the southeastern city of Changwon, the report said. ... Samsung sued LG Electronics employees after the incident in Germany, and LG said the company has counter-sued Samsung employees on Dec. 12. Media reports have earlier said prosecutors banned LG's Seong-jin from leaving the country ahead of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to be held January 6-9.

If your answer is corruption, be prepared to be laughed at and asked why the heck this elimination of privacy would make corruption harder instead of easier. It's one less branch of the system you need to bribe.

Trading freedom for safety does not work. For a proof, just look at the ultimate exchange of freedom for security: A jail. Now, do you want to tell me that inmates are SAFE in there?

The Open Bay Helps Launch 372 'Copies' of the Pirate Bay In a Week 63

An anonymous reader writes isoHunt, the group now best known for launching The Old Pirate Bay, has shared an update a week after debuting The Open Bay. The Pirate Bay, the most popular file sharing website on the planet, still isn't back following police raids on its data center in Sweden, but its "cause" is very much alive. So far, 372 "copies" of The Pirate Bay have been created thanks to the project. The torrent database dump, which combines content from isoHunt, KickassTorrents (via its public API), and The Old Pirate Bay, has seen 1,256 downloads to date.

"Just make all the STEM programs FREE."

I know this wasn't the main thrust of your comment, and I agree with everything else in it. But whenever people say "make college free" I find that they're submerging critical questions about for whom, and under what circumstances, it's free.

Free for whom? Are there residence or citizenship requirements? Are there age requirements? Are there entrance requirements? Do they get free housing? Do they get free food? Do they get free health care or insurance? Do they get free travel? (For several of these: if "yes" then you'll get a bunch of scammers gaming the system, if "no" then only people with a certain wealth level can take advantage.) Are there criteria they must meet to stay in the program? If they fail those criteria, is there allowance or incentive to pay out-of-pocket for the remainder of the program? For how long?

Romanian Cybersecurity Law Will Allow Warrantless Access To Data 62

jfruh writes: The Romanian Parliament has passed a bill that will allow its security services widespread access to data on privately owned services without a warrant, and once the president signs it, it will become law. The law would have widespread impact beyond Romania because the country is a hub for IT outsourcing.

Example of legal punishments handed out a few years ago when transit workers went on strike in NYC:

Other states are not quite so codified; but here's a ruling in California that establishes "essential" workers cannot strike, including police & firefighters, possibly nurses and teachers:
