The real problem I see with SLS is that it's a rocket without a mission that no-one expects to fly more than a couple of times, so there's no real incentive to do a good job.

Can you point to a single state's laws that use that terminology? I've never heard of one. It's all about "fired for cause" vs "fired without cause". You may prefer the terms "fired" vs "laid off", but that's a newish meaning for "laid off".

What really matters to me is "do you get a respectable severance package?" You don't necessarily get one even if you're 'laid off", as some companies are really broke, and some are complete assholes.

Care to add any facts to that statement? So-called "organic" produce requires a shit-ton more chemicals than the 'regular' or GMO plants. GMO plants require the least amount of chemicals by simply altering their genes. The plants are not producing any synthetic pesticides. We've been GMO-ing our crops for the last 10,000 years, lately we're doing it on a bit more advanced level than your average farmer to understand and suddenly it's "witchcraft"?

But if that pesticide has no biological mechanism of interacting with humans, being scared of it is stupid.

On my Windows boxes, the (soft) power switch works just fine, thanks. It's set up to do a graceful shutdown, so it won't shut down if an application foolishly needs to ask me whether or not to save changes, but that's mostly the application's fault (see Notepad++ for how to do it right), and I could set up the power button to do a "maintenance shutdown," which force closes everything, if applications were written better.

Powering off without any notice at all, safely, would really limit performance in many ways - I'm just as happy to wait a second or two for unsaved changes to be parked, all the write caches to flush and so on.

Basic physics will keep persistent storage slower than volatile memory, but if you're content with 1990s performance, you could probably build a PC that worked that way. Heck, it probably exists for some exotic use case.

The marketing was good. The device sucked, and beyond the touch screen and including an actually adequate browser, was barely an incremental improvement over what was out there. Yeah, Pocket PC and Windows Mobile sucked, but the iPhone only sucked marginally less (and they had apps, the iPhone didn't).

The only thing Apple did aside the incremental technical improvement, was strike a deal for unlimited internet with a major carrier (which didn't last, btw), which got attention. More importantly, they managed to make it cool and hip, instead of being a geek toy. With those 2 things, Apple could have pushed out a white Pocket PC/Windows Mobile phone exactly like the ones that existed at the time, and ended with very similar results.

Mann developed look-through reality mediation/augmentation devices back in the 90s and the technology has progressed easily to the level of mass marketability since then. Yet another "here's a small screen bolted to your head" device is as useful as just hanging my cellphone from a hat.
