If these students have a moral objection to "dirty oil companies" I sincerely hope they are living in caves and shunning all oil-based products and technologies used in modern society. When you challenge someone on moral grounds you need to first look at the ground you yourself are standing on.

I'm looking for a small desktop BSD, something that runs Xorg and fits in a GB or less of disk, so I can run multiples of them as virtual machines. I need some kind of browser that can run YouTube, plus ssh, and otherwise I don't much care what it does, but small disk is good.

Yeah, there are some websites you might want to go to that still need Flash or some equally ugly support to get video to work. Right now I've been trying to get SliTaz Linux to let me watch YouTube as well as finding the right operating system and VMware settings to make the display resizeable, but I'm also trying out DragonFly BSD (still at the "installing Xorg" stage.)

If you really need computational horsepower, get yourself some kind of PC with a fast graphics card and run CUDA or one of the other GPU-based computation packages. (In my case, I went with a Raspberry Pi :-)

I hope they at least let you mount disk drives using Samba or NFS or whatever from your own file server at home, in addition to whatever walled-garden functionality they may be selling. Much of their target market is going to include people who have those, either purpose-built servers or terabyte-disk USB/Ethernet external drives or their old Windows box with file sharing turned on.

Ok, some jerk actually managed to steal enough Dogecoins a few months ago to be worth actual money, which is so not the point of Dogecoin. I mine them partly because they're worth basically zero while still being cryptographically interesting; six months of one CPU on my old lab PC might have added up to 25 cents, but it's still in the "Reddit tip jar" range, not the "So wow! HLS should teach vocabulary on the first day of class to 1Ls - particularly the meaning of the words "frivolous" and "standing". Sad that these students managed to get an undergraduate degree without understanding the meaning of those words and their applicability to lawsuits.

You are not the only person around and not the only person who helped other and no, we should not have 'support systems' if they are based on initiating of violence by government against an individual. It is immoral because it relies on violence against people and bad economic policy as well, because it leads to growth of government power and of the welfare state that eats itself to death.

There is no such thing as 'regulated free market'. Regulated means not a free market and what we have today across the globe is failure socialist/fascist policies that presents itself in the increasing economic downturn, reduction of standard of living for all people, you are pulling everybody down with your edge case based policies. Somalia has nothing to do with free market capitalism, it is a country that had to fight one war after another against the occupying forces.

There can be no compromise, income taxation, business regulation and money printing (inflation) are immoral and are leading towards economic disaster in countries that practice it, while those who are reducing the government pressure are building up their capital and wealth as a result (China as an example).

History has shown us exactly what happens when role of government is reduced - people become free and build the strongest economies in the world. We also know what happens when governments grow in power regardless of the reasons (and they always promise a free lunch for the majority), everybody becomes a slave and a poor slave at that.
