I've never met anyone who can argue successfully against action on climate in an open debate.

Well, since you are being the judge of 'successful,' I'm not surprised you've never seen that. You are no different than most people in that you don't like to lose your own argument.

In the case of climate change, people and politicians are happy to help the environment. You will rarely see a politician who says he wants to hurt the environment.

It's only when you get down to specific propositions that people object. How much are you willing to help the environment? Are you willing to double the price of gas (to decrease demand)? Are you willing to significantly increase your electric bill? The answer to these for most people is no, they aren't.

But if it's just 'doing something', sure, I'm in favor of 'doing something,' as long as it doesn't negatively effect me.

lately, US news and politics are more vapid and transparent than grumpy cat's take on things. the reality is that our political system is really because voters are gullible enough to thing they have a choice about what happens when it's really a one party system. the news spews lies about everything like it's DEFCON 1 everyday when they are speaking of meaninal bullshit. meanwhile there are serious matters that has caused a massive schism in the middle class and shit is hitting the fan. if you protest you are either cordoned off and ignored and/or abused by the police which are not help accountable for their actions. can you blame us for wanting an escape? Or better, test your aid to make sure it's actually working. A technique could work in multiple studies of competing hypotheses and still not work later on.

But if you are spending millions of dollars without checking how well it's working, why not?

but you could turn it around the other way and say that fads involving big ideas are hurting science as well

I'm not sure that's relevant. Deworming kids isn't exactly a big idea.

The only way to reduce carbon emissions is to improve our technology to the point that non-emitting technologies are cheaper than emitting technologies. Electric cars, etc.

The reason politicians won't come to a meaningful agreement is because the population doesn't want it. Most people aren't willing to give up their car (or even double the price of gas) for the sake of global warming.

It would be easier to get everyone to agree to switch to nuclear energy than to agree to meaningful limits on CO2 emissions, and you should be familiar with how difficult of a political problem that is. People don't want to switch to nuclear because of.........actually I don't really know why, but even in countries that actually want to do something about CO2 (like Germany) are switching away from nuclear, so that tells you how hard the problem is.

Remember the boost India got from British law, civil organization, and railroad engineering?

When the British arrived in India in the 1600s, Indians and Britons had roughly similar levels of income. By 1947, when the British left, Indians had less than 5% the income of Britons, and India was one of the poorest countries in the world. In the decade prior to independence, three million Indians starved to death.

Kind of hard to find a job in the middle of the great recession combined with massive outsourcing and legal/illegal rampant immigration.

Baloney. Go early in the morning to any Home Depot or other home improvement store, and you will see a crowd of day laborers in the parking lot. By late morning, most of them have found work for the day. Do a quick demographic survey, and this is what you will find: Number of white people: 0%. Number of black people: 0%. Number of Hispanic people: 100%. The reason is that the Hispanics can't get paid to do nothing. The problem is not a "lack of jobs" but a lack of easy jobs that people are willing to do. Necessity is the mother of the work ethic.

Sorry, but you are a fool. High carb diets promote hunger, which is what leads to larger portion sizes. It's a vicious cycle, and you aren't going to stop it by attacking the portion size. That just leaves people hungry, and they are going to cheat on their "diet" and it gets worse. You are spouting the EXACT SAME BS that has been spouted in the US for 30+ years to the exact opposite effect. I try low carb and in six months I lose what it took my 13 years to gain, no hunger, no exercise. Sure, I eat less than I did, but that is BECAUSE THE FOOD IS MORE FILLING, not due to some superhuman feat of willpower on my part.
