And if Sony handled it like you say Audible did, there'd probably be fewer complaints.

So far as I see it, it shouldn't matter whether or not Sony retains the rights to sell licenses for some content, unless they explicitly stated that at the point of sale. I never had a PlayStation account, so I don't know how that process works. I know that on Amazon, it says RENT or BUY. If Amazon told me it couldn't play something in my library of purchased things because of licensing, I would pitch a fit and take it to... hmmm... the FTC I think. False advertising for renting me something and calling it a purchase.

I'm rarely in favor of government intervention in the markets, but this would be a legitimate place. This is an issue that needs to be cleared up. It creates too much uncertainty. People may need to sue Sony to get it going. Or, a federal legislator seeing that their copy of their favorite movie is gone.

I'm not sure about the legality. If you illegally download a copy of windows but activate it with a legit key, MS won't call you a pirate. If I download a DVD rip of some Red Dwarf episodes because I don't feel like looking for my DVD or hooking up a player, have I violated my license? Certainly not in spirit, but I don't know what the law might think. If I have a Netflix account and download a copy of One Piece for whatever reason, does Netflix care or have a cause to care? I don't know. (Don't care much either, I'm still going to do it)

And if it's all just licenses, then what's wrong with me downloading a BDRip of something I bought on VHS? I have little doubt that MPAA lawyers would take issue, but that doesn't mean much to me. I care what other people think, and lawyers gave up the right to be people when they joined the bar.
