Minecraft Has Sold Over 300 Million Copies (theverge.com) 31

Minecraft already has the distinction of being the bestselling video game of all time. Today, it adds more down to that particular feather in its cap with the announcement that it has sold a staggering 300 million copies. From a report: "As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold, a milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks," Helen Chiang, head of Mojang Studios, said in a statement. Even the second bestselling video game of all time, Grand Theft Auto V, doesn't even come close to Minecraft's numbers, topping out at 185 million reported sales.

  • That's a nice comment and all, but sales figures are subject to some funny accounting practices.

For example, im not even sure how you measure sales these days. Minecraft on android and iphone remains a $7 purchase, so how many of those 300 million sales are mobile edition purchases?

Another thing that's interesting to consider is the revenue flows from the market place content. At this point, i wonder when they are going to make Minecraft free to play and sales figures become irrelevant. It would be interest

  • I found a review [youtube.com] a while ago that is still unmatched. It captures my sentiment for this game perfectly.

Especially where he compares it to building a model train set, a hobby you spend countless hours on that would feel a little less of a waste if you could just find someone to appreciate and praise it.

Maybe that's why there are probably more hours of video of various Minecraft worlds than there are ever going to be people spending those hours to watch them.

    • No thanks. I stopped trusting him when he gave Undertale game of the year.

Their heyday is probably past at this point, but for many years there were whole youtube channels and even entire creator networks devoted entirely to Minecraft content because of the sheer amount of hours watched of it. It took awhile to get going but a lot of stuff was appreciated and praised for a long time. I've seen some arguments made that Minecraft content was such a huge percentage of youtube consumption overall for awhile that it was a big contributor to the dominance that YT has today.

I had that same feeling, but enjoyed watching HermitCraft, so I thought playing online with people would probably be better. I joined a "HermitCraft-like" server and indeed I had a good time building stuff other people could visit, and visiting stuff other people made. However, it only keeps going so long as everyone's interested in it. The guy who ran the server was very sensitive to decreasing interest, and once people weren't playing enough (what *he* defined as enough) then he chose to wrap it up two
  • Bought Minecraft for the Xbox360. Bought it for the PC. Bought it again for each of my kids because the world decided kids need their own copies now instead of how it used to be where one FAMILY bought a game. Want to play Monopoly with 3 people? Go get 3 licenses plebs... Bought it again to get it on the Xbox One. Then bought the Java edition because I had family who couldn't play with my kids.

I AM DONE BUYING MINECRAFT ANYMORE! DONE!

  • It is important to remember that games use other games as inspiration all the time. Notch credited Infinimer [wired.com] as the inspiration.

Like most evenings after work, Markus was on the computer when he stumbled upon an indie game he hadn't tried before. It was called Infiniminer. Markus downloaded the game, installed and clicked it into motion, and then almost fell off his chair. "Oh my God," he thought. "This is genius."
