The screen is refreshed more often the higher the refresh rate, less opportunity for tearing. Are you a gamer? If not then you probably don't need a high refresh rate monitor. Higher refresh rates open up more frame rate caps for smoother play. My monitor is 240hz, I generally lock the frame rate on games at 80 fps. 40 fps is a nice compromise frame rate for consoles that is not available on a 60hz display, you need at least 120hz.
