Intel CEO Says the Chipmaker's Technology Is Central To AI Boom (bloomberg.com) 12

Intel Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger, plotting a comeback for the once-dominant chipmaker, made the case that the company's technology will be vital to an industrywide boom in artificial intelligence computing. From a report: Speaking at Intel's annual Innovation conference, Gelsinger pointed to advances that his company is making in production technology and software developer tools for AI. The opportunity will only grow as more artificial intelligence capabilities are powered by personal computers, he said. "AI represents a generational shift, giving rise to a new era of global expansion where computing is even more foundational to a better future for all," Gelsinger said.

"For developers, this creates massive societal and business opportunities to push the boundaries of what's possible, to create solutions to the world's biggest challenges." Gelsinger is trying to fire up interest in Intel's technology and return to an era when its annual conferences offered a road map for the whole computing industry. He argues that artificial intelligence use won't be confined to the data centers of giant cloud providers, which rely heavily on chips from Nvidia. Instead, it will fan out into new areas, including the now-moribund PC market.

What is this, like 6 months now?
    • It's not pump and dump. The word AI may be meaningless nonsense but what technology underpins it and actually does will be with us for a long time. It is being baked into very common every day tools, and will definitely benefit from some form of hardware acceleration. It's about as much of a fad as 3D acceleration, and just like 3D acceleration I don't think Intel's products will be a meaningful player.

  • Seriously by the time Intel catches up the fad will be over with all customers having used NVIDIA's products instead.

    • nVidia's new memory interconnect will ensure Intel never catches up.

They may be out of business before they can field a decent chip at this rate.

Nvida would be fucked if for whatever reason TSMC stopped making chips for them. We've had two black swans in the last 3 years (COVID, Ukraine), but apparently trillion dollar semiconductor companies with no fabs of their own (Nvidia) have nothing whatsoever to worry about.

  • I mean, there is no way anybody can do AI on an ARM chip... right? Actually, there is an implication they will use graphics chips instead of Intel CPUs.. Nobody out there is using Intel GPUs unless they don't have a choice.

We have had absolutely nothing to do with the current AI fad. We desperately want to be part of the current AI fad. Therefore, I will wishful thinking myself into believing we are absolutely central to the current AI fad, and our technology will absolutely provide the backbone for some market babble daydream in the future when AI moves off the big rigs and into PCs. We don't know how this will happen. We don't know why this will happen. We don't even know if it's possible for it to happen. By we will not stop until we force it to happen, reality be damned!

WE WILL MAKE MONEY ON THIS FAD!

Try to ignore the part where you see him sobbing as he walks away from the podium, repeating in a breathy whisper, "We will make money on this fad. Marketing and sales promised. We will make money on this fad.

  • They're hoping for the nVIDIA AI stock price bump. GLWT.
  • Intel can't even make a competitive GPU rivaling Nvidia and AMD. They really think they're going to be able to beat either at AI?
  • Intel is needed for AI because AI can be trained on all of Intel's bloviating about how needed they are for AI.
