Microsoft is Testing Skype Meet Now Integration With Edge (neowin.net) 11

Although Microsoft Edge has recently faced a lot of ridicule because the Redmond tech giant keeps adding what many consider as "bloat" in its web browser, it seems that the company is hell-bent on this path. Now, it appears that a Skype Meet Now panel is being added to Microsoft Edge. From a report: The integration was spotted by eagle-eyed Redditor and regular Neowin news tipster u/Leopeva64-2, who spotted the change in the latest Edge Canary build. Essentially, you now have a new toggle in the Appearance setting that adds a Skype Meet Now button to the Edge omnibar. Clicking on it in the omnibar opens a Skype Meet Now panel directly in Microsoft Edge.

I thought Skype was devoured by Teams. I haven't seen a Windows machine without Teams recently. I'm guessing it was installed as part of some sort of update.

Microsoft is a good example of what happens when a company has too much money. They have to figure out a way to spend all those billions so they keep cooking up all sorts of stupid pointless shit.

      See also, Google, Facebook, Apple.
  • Great that they have merged two products I'll never use. Makes it easier to avoid accidentally installing them!

Don't worry. They'll soon make Edge your new desktop, to better serve you those tasty tasty personal ads you've always wanted.

      • Honestly? At the rate they're bloating it up, they might just be aiming at making Edge the entire OS. That sweet, sweet low-budget market is getting gobbled up by Chromebooks. Microsoft wants their version.

As Microsoft has told us in the past, the browser is so deeply intertwined with the OS that it would be impossible to separate them. Now we're learning that Skype is similarly intertwined, with no hope of ever removing it from Edge/Windows. Soon you, too, User, will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

This has to be a Gen-Z idea - everyone else lived through Active Desktop was when it was tried the first time.

  • In other news, nobody cares about Edge. But it's baked into Windows 11 and if you use the widgets bar or the search function at all, it launches Edge (not the browser, msedgewebview2). So when you see the usage statistics, understand that they are being bolstered by people who don't even know they're using Edge (and Bing for that matter).

This is what they have to resort to, because nobody cares about Edge or Bing. It's stillborn. It's an ego project because of NIH syndrome.

Haven't you caused enough damage to computer systems yet?
