The ironic thing is that most of the projects in MAKE really require more financial investment to execute than they would if you bought prefab. The things in MAKE that supposedly save you money actually assume that you already have a shitload of spare parts and accessories that are not cheap to accumulate.

i think i could go through most/all the projects and show that many of them are cheaper than buying things already made. we have a $14 camera stabilizer, the same ones sell for $400+...modding disposable cameras for kite photos...some things we show to make you can't really buy, like a spud gun. that said, that's not the point - making a water rocket for example might take a little more time than buy a version at mall, but building it together with your kids/friend/etc is really where (i think) the value c
