As a counter-anecdote, last week I was in France for a music festival, and one of the bar staff there was clearly american. I'm not french and so she wondered where I was from, I answered and her immediate response was; 'I have no idea where that is, my geography is terrible, I'm from the states'.

If you are losing billions due to a CPU architecture bug then you are an idiot.

Even if you are somehow sure that the CPU has no bugs, you can't be sure it won't suffer from power glitches, cosmic rays and innumerable other things that can make it crash or get the wrong result. Not to mention the rest of the computer - ECC RAM can only correct single bit errors, assuming it has no faults.

Sure, lots of little things like the cpu will crash in some cases if a second level shadow of the carry flag register is set immediately after some other thing... so the fix is for the microcode to reorder the operations a little bit so that operations that target the carry flag are on the shallow side of the shadow registers... or at least never in that 2nd slot.. shit like that aint nothing

It is the parallel execution itself that isnt working here. Wrong results are produced. It isnt that performance is bad, or a core locks up... instead bad values are produced. Its a horrible bug at least as bad as FDIV.

You may want to actually learn a damn thing about European politics. Right-wing parties have been on a wild rise for the last 15-20 years, and it's only recently that the left has managed to push back and cause a small move back towards more sensible politics.

These are rollbacks on exchange accounts. Those transactions never entered the blockchain. An exchange account is like an IOU while the exchange backs those IOUs with real coin in an internal wallet until such time as you send a coin transfer from your account to an external address. Only then do the transaction get recorded in the blockchain.

What GDAX is doing is simply restoring those IOUs for people whose IOUs got wiped out. At the same time, they allow the people who scooped up those IOUs for cheap to keep them, whether they are still there or not. Since part of their own assets are company owned coin (which is probably separate from the exchange hot wallet) all this means is that they suck up the financial hit for the sake of PR.

The blockchain was not altered in any way. There are no holes, and it is only possible for GDAX to reimburse the GDAX customers that were affected by the flash crash.

Was not even mentioned in the summary. You can run multiple cabins in the same shaft, saving precious floor space (and move the cabins horizontally if they need to pass each other, or you can just assign up and down shafts). Thus, for larger buildings this type of elevator can actually be a major cost saver.
