Umm, many times in human history we had to make assumptions for things we could not detect or see. In the past, we attributed lots of those things to magic and deities. Now it's dark stuff. But, we will eventually figure it out and it won't be so magical once we figure it out.

And on the flip side, there is a galaxy (Dragonfly 44) that from gravitation lensing seems to be as massive as the milky way, yet is only 1% as bright. Easy to explain with the dark matter theory, but difficult with the modified gravity.

More CO2 distributed throughout the atmosphere will shift the lower samples up by some (colder) and the higher samples up by an amount which is less (warmer).
