How many sick days do you get? How many paid holidays (vs personal days).

At my US job I officially have 0 sick days and 0 PTO. I am paid a salary whether I work or not. I can arrange to not show up to work and continue to get the same salary. But there is no written standard for how much I can take, and I do not accrue any PTO that I can collect as a check when I leave.

This sort of weirdo policy is starting to become popular in the tech industry, especially in Silicon Valley. And it makes comparing job benefits almost impossible.

Submission + - Hubble finds something astronomers can't explain

schwit1 writes: The Hubble Space Telescope has spotted the explosion of a star that does not fit into any theory for stellar evolution.

The exploding star, which was seen in the constellation Eridanus, faded over two weeks — much too rapidly to qualify as a supernova. The outburst was also about ten times fainter than most supernovae, explosions that destroy some or all of a star. But it was about 100 times brighter than an ordinary nova, which is a type of surface explosion that leaves a star intact. "The combination of properties is puzzling," says Mario Livio, an astrophysicist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. "I thought about a number of possibilities, but each of them fails" to account for all characteristics of the outburst, he adds.

We can put this discovery on the bottom of a very long list of similar discoveries by Hubble, which this week is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its launch.

Honestly though the only reason to get an Explorer instead of a minivan is because you don't want to "look" old even though you are.

Either that, or the fact that the Explorer has a 5,000 lb. towing capacity vs. the 3,500 max you get from most minivans, and also has higher profile seating, etc. I was worried about functionality more than anything else. But yeah, the Explorer is the typical "go-to midlife crisis chick magnet" vehicle that most older guys get, so there's that too.

Here's what I think of when I think of "progressives". And this. These people would be more than happy to harm you if you don't "smarten up" and conform to their world view, so don't you dare think you have some sort of moral high ground to stand on.

Why do people want to drive these things? They aren't attractive, they don't stop/go fast, they can't carry much stuff.

Can't speak for the pathfinder, but I have a 2015 Ford Explorer XLT & it rocks. We get a ton of snow in the winter, so AWD is a very nice convenience. Also, the height of the vehicle is helpful for seeing other traffic over snowbanks at intersections.

The EcoBoost V6 has plenty of spunk -- enough that the local sheriff's office & the state police have some in their fleet, and I have a ton of hauling space if I put down the 2nd & 3rd row seats. Right after we got it, we bought a new kitchen sink, cabinets & countertop, and were able to fit everything in one trip.

We also have the tow package so we can haul a pop-up camper we were given as a hand-me-down from my folks.

Finally, my dogs love it. We can fit our Dane's memory foam bed in the back with the 3rd row down, and he can sprawl out. Much easier for him when we go on long trips.

The whole idea of faith is belief without proof; if God "proved" himself then we have proof, and no faith. Or something like that, is what all the religious people tell me.

No it's not. All the religious people you've talked to have gotten it wrong. Even Jesus asked his disciples to make their decision about him based upon what they had witnessed:

If God is real, and requires his followers to do all the anti-humanity acts in the various texts, that entity shouldn't be worshiped anyway.

Why not? How can you, in a universe without objective moral truth, say anyone should or shouldn't do anything and be able to have any legitimacy? The very best you can do is state a preference, but you can't make a moral judgement.

God is quite a violent entity; I'd rather have us go it alone than have some homicidal, all-powerful creature just waiting to burn me forever in hell because I mowed my lawn on a Saturday.

I wasn't sure that last part was the case, so I searched and found this on Wikipedia:

A coin is fiat currency to the extent its face value, value defined in law, is greater than its market value as metal.

However, this appears to have happened in the United States almost 10 years ago.

Submission + - Federal agent smashes cellphone woman was using to record police activity... (latimes.com)

schwit1 writes: After high-profile uses of force caught on video in places like South Carolina, New York and L.A.'s skid row, officers in the Southeast L.A. suburb had been told to take filming in stride. If you're not doing anything wrong, police brass reasoned, what do you have to worry about?

So on Sunday, when a lawman was caught on video snatching a woman's cellphone in South Gate as she recorded and smashing it on the floor, it was with relief that South Gate police said the officer wasn't one of their own but a deputy U.S. marshal.

There's a difference between invasive and non-invasive probes. Finding molecules outside your car is non-invasive. Projecting an EMF beam into it is.

This is why I included infrared in my sample of possible devices/methods. An infrared camera type device simply detects the radiation leaving your personal/private property/vehicle/home that a human cannot see with their eyes, the same way a biological sensor called a dog detects scent molecules outside your personal/private property/vehicle/home that a human cannot detect with their sense of smell.
