Paul Krugman Awarded Nobel Prize For Economics 425

zogger writes in his journal, "The guy who put together the concept of geographical location combined with cheap transportation leading to 'like trades with like' and the rise of superindustrial trading blocs has won the Nobel economics science prize. He's a bigtime critic of a lot of this administration's policies, and is unabashedly an FDR-economy styled fella. Here is his blog at the NYTimes." Reader yoyoq adds that Krugman's career choice was inspired by reading Asimov's Foundation series at a young age.

Measuring the "Colbert Bump" 674

An anonymous reader writes "Democratic politicians receive a 40% increase in contributions in the 30 days after appearing on the comedy cable show The Colbert Report. In contrast, their Republican counterparts essentially gain nothing. Moreover, even a cursory analysis demonstrates that despite being a comedy program The Colbert Report appears to exercise 'disproportionate real world influence' — likely due to the 'elite demographic' of its audience." In my home we refer to Stephen as "Loud Daddy" because my child would scream bloody murder when we paused him (and only him) on screen. Even at 8 months old the kid has strange taste.

Judge Demands Information About Missing White House Emails 209

Lucas123 writes "A District Court judge has ordered the Executive Office of the President to tell the court by May 5 whether any e-mail server backup tapes were kept for a period from March to October 2003 to cover controversial issues such as reasons for starting the war in Iraq, the release of a former CIA operative's name and the US Department of Justice's actions. The White House has been working for months trying to fend off a lawsuit filed last May in federal court in Washington by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics. The judge cited what he called an apparent contradiction by White House CIO Theresa Payton as to whether backup tapes had been preserved. He also recommended that White House employees be ordered to turn over any flash drives or other portable media that may contain e-mails. The White House missing email scandal has been developing for some time now."

Pentagon Manipulating TV Analysts 361

gollum123 notes an extensive article from the NYTimes on the evidence that the military, since the time of the buildup to the Iraq war, has been manipulating the military analysts that are ubiquitous on TV and radio news programs, in a protracted campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration's war efforts. "Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity of military analysts on the major networks, is a Pentagon information apparatus... The effort... has sought to exploit ideological and military allegiances, and also a powerful financial dynamic: Most of the analysts have ties to military contractors vested in the very war policies they are asked to assess on air. Several dozen of the military analysts represent more than 150 military contractors either as lobbyists, senior executives, board members, or consultants. Records and interviews show how the Bush administration has used its control over access and information in an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse — an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks. ...[M]embers of this group have echoed administration talking points, sometimes even when they suspected the information was false or inflated. Some analysts acknowledge they suppressed doubts because they feared jeopardizing their access."

Submission + - Fitna [the banned film] now online on LiveLeak

Qwrk writes: Right-wing politician Geert Wilders released his controversial movie "FITNA" through LiveLeak just an hour ago. The strip managed to get outright condemnation of Muslim world-wide, and even the faint Christian-Orthodoc Dutch Government was inclined to bow under pressure NOT to have the film appear. Google can be your best friend or check http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=ee4_1206625795 for yourselves, before the onset of international protests. [Tibet is a far more important issue IMHO...]

Submission + - Fear affecting both Google and Network Solutions

Ombudsman writes: In an interesting move, both Network Solutions and Google are blocking access to http://www.fitnathemovie.com/ by Dutch politician Geert Wilders. In a story in today's Washington Post, Brian Krebs ( http://blog.washingtonpost.com/securityfix/2008/03/networksolutions_precensors_an.html?hpid=sec-tech ) talks about the decision by Network Solutions to block the domain, not in response to any actual complaints, but by the fear of the type of violence sparked by the 2006 cartoons of Islam ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/30/AR2006013001316.html ).

What makes the story all the more interesting is Creeping Sharia ( http://creepingsharia.wordpress.com/2008/03/22/google-removes-fitna-the-movie-from-search-results ) reports that Google now filters these results, while their competitors at http://www.yahoo.com/ does not.

The whole episode is interesting since none of this is in response to either government sanction nor to any threat or complaint. And of course, as usual, nobody will officially comment on the matter.

Network Solutions Suspends Site of Anti-Islam Film 874

h4rm0ny notes the furor over an anti-Islamic movie due to be released on the Web in the next week. After Pakistan disrupted YouTube worldwide over an interview with right-wing Dutch MP and filmmaker Geert Wilders, Network Solutions, acting as host as well as registrar, has suspended Wilders's site promoting the 15-minute film "Fitna" (a Koranic term translated as "strife"). The site now displays a notice that it is under investigation for possible violations of NetSol's acceptable use policy. According to the article the company's guidelines include "a sweeping prohibition against 'objectionable material of any kind or nature.'" The article describes the site's content before NetSol pulled the plug as a single page with the film's title, an image of the Koran, and the words "Coming Soon." No one but Wilders has seen the film to date. The Dutch government has distanced itself from the film, fearing Muslim backlash. A million Muslims live in The Netherlands. Wilders's party, which controls 9 of 150 seats in the Dutch parliament, was elected on an anti-immigration platform.

Submission + - Jerry Pournelle undergoing radiation therapy (brucefwebster.com)

bfwebster writes: "I just found out that Jerry Pournelle — science fiction author and BYTE columnist for decades — is undergoing radiation therapy for a brain tumor or growth of some kind. I've known Jerry and his lovely wife Roberta since the mid-80s, when I wrote for BYTE myself, and I've had the privilege of visiting them at home and having them in ours. While some disagree with Jerry's political and/or technological views — and while he certainly doesn't suffer fools gladly — Jerry is one of the brightest and most broadly- and deeply-read people I have ever met in my life. Stop by his blog to track his progress and wish him the best."

Muslim Groups Attempt to Censor Wikipedia 1730

Nom du Keyboard writes "The New York Times is reporting that Muslim groups are attempting to censor Wikipedia because of images of Muhammad contained in the article about him. 'A Frequently Asked Questions page explains the site's polite but firm refusal to remove the images: "Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with the goal of representing all topics from a neutral point of view, Wikipedia is not censored for the benefit of any particular group." The notes left on [online petitions against the page] come from all over the world. "It's totally unacceptable to print the Prophet's picture," Saadia Bukhari from Pakistan wrote in a message. "It shows insensitivity towards Muslim feelings and should be removed immediately."'"

The same thing is happening anywhere someone can be sued, not just the President.

Many companies (like Microsoft) are trying to keep email useful by making it company policy that email is not preserved.

Once you have something that could be preserved... the temptation is powerful to require people to preserve it, and thereby stifle it's use.

Imagine what will happen once all phone conversations could be preserved. With all calls going over VOIP systems on computers, it's only a matter of time before it happens.

Submission + - 57 mpg? That's so 20 years ago 6

maclizard writes: "I wish my car got 57 miles to the gallon.

From the article:
'The CRX HF got an Environmental Protection Agency-estimated 57 mpg gallon in highway driving. Today, the most fuel-efficient non-hybrid Civic you can buy gets an EPA-estimated 34 mpg on the highway. Even today's Honda Civic Hybrid can't match it, achieving EPA-estimated highway mileage of just 45 mpg. The Toyota Prius, today's fuel mileage champ, gets 46 mpg on the highway.'"
