AFIK, ATT has NO plans to provide fiber to the entire state.

Of course not, because providing fiber to small towns and isolated homes is not profitable and arguably not efficient. However, they are aggressively rolling out fiber to homes now in many areas, including Silicon Valley. The homes less than 0.5 miles from us had fiber many years ago. This past summer, AT&T not only installed fiber but send hordes of salespeople knocking on all homes in our neighborhood. I'm glad that we now have an alternative to Comcast to provide some price competition. I just switched to AT&T fiber at $50/month for 1 Gbps plus a $200 gift card.

A slowdown of any magnitude compared to many competitors that are going full-steam ahead might impact the IPO. Guess which motivation is going to win out? Sure, Amodei is saying all the right PR stuff right now, but is Anthropic AI development actually slowing down? Amodei could have announced that Anthropic is unilaterally slowing down AI development, but he didn't and won't. He's just trying to attract the PR while cashing in on the IPO.

Unfortunately, the abuses, including perverted uses, are too numerous. The privacy invasions are arguably not even the biggest problem. The bigger problem is that the good uses will be killed by the abuses.

Unfortunately, the reason for Trump doing what he did was simply that he could. He had the power to do something that no one else in the world could do, so he did it to show that he could do something that no one else could do. The great irony is that Trump is consumed with his appearance and yet his actions make him look bad. The only reason he doesn't recognize the obviousness of the badness is that he has surrounded himself with yes-men and carpetbaggers that inflate his already enormous lack of awareness.

Engineers need to remember that time exists.

You have three months to teach a teen how to control a robot with a microcontroller.

OK, how much of that do you budget to CS and assembly?

Month 1: Architecture and data structures? You have 18 40 minute periods and maybe homework assignments.

Half of the class won't even gain mastery in that time. By time your class is over they will still be having memory management problems.

So then you've failed to achieve the goal.

There are engineers who remember that time exists and for the rest we have engineering managers. Not ideal, just how it is.

To be sure engineering schools are doing a bad job at teaching reality. Even in a dx/dr environment, it's so weird.

Ugh...had to get on ChatGPT and find out what the fuck 12C was in F.

Ok, so about 54F...roughly. That's cool...I guess depends a bit on how high your humidity is. In the New Orleans area, it can be 54F and very humid...if the wind is coming in off the lake it can be quite chilly....but if lower humidity, more into winter months,...that's not too cold...I'd be wearing a sweater or a jacket....not both.

You can't get a couple window units to have AC when you need it?

You can put them up and take them down pretty readily......better than baking/roasting on those days when you really don't need to.

rarely do temperatures in the Bay Area exceed 80 in coastal areas or 90 inland

The Bay Area is famous for extreme microclimates. While San Francisco may be on the chilly side, Livermore in the East Bay is the opposite. In the past month of August, it experienced 15 days of 90+ weather, plus another 5 days of 88-89 weather. That's not that unusual for the East Bay.
