I believe that the math supports creating a biosphere that would persist on human timescales, just not geologic ones.

IE we could create an atmosphere that would last for 10K years, but would eventually be stripped in 1M years.

If that's worth the effort remains to be seen, but some do think that yes it might be.

I watched the "Project Turntable" video, and that is unbelievably cool.

To work, the AI has to recognize what the drawing represents, figure out how to reverse-transform the 2D representation into a 3D object, and work out what the hidden parts should look like. It's amazing.

It's only a short step between this and working out walk cycles, matching mouth movements to dialogue, adding facial expressions, etc.

This will revolutionize 2D animation.

Yep, you're right 1 hour max /s.

Browsers are the most insecure attack surface of any aspect of modern computers. Apple's s/w is built using standard engineering decision-making - can we rely on X being there ? Why yes we can, so we can delegate this function to that system framework which we've tested is all secure.

Except that all breaks down when someone installs a 3rd party browser. Now the security model of the system depends on the security model of the installed browser, and that's just not acceptable. It may be the user's fault that they installed but you can guarantee that Apple will be holding the can at the end of any argument over why their nudes are now all over the internet.

If you have a headset, and you haven't tried VR Porn filmed with a 180 camera, you're missing out.

I've watched porn since the birth of the internet, always for free. VR Porn is the first time I've ever actually paid for it. A lifetime subscription, in fact.

The "full eye-contact" appeal has been mentioned, but let's not forget having the talent whisper in your ear while she sits in your lap. Mind blowing.

I believe that the killer app for VR is 3D spreadsheets.

Going from 2D (x,y) to 3D (x,y,z) allows you to cube your information density. You can go from tracking a single cause, effect, to adding a literal new dimension of cause, cause, effect.

And, it would lead to a network effect: if you weren't visualizing your biz data in 3D, you'd be behind the times and left out of the conversation. Everyone that wanted to look at the same data would need the same 3D app, which means a VR headset to do it with.

Also, in terms of graphics overlays, it would be fairly low demanding, so you could do it on basically anything.

I remember leaving /. for reddit and being amazed at the ubiquity of community moderating. Anyone could vote as many times as they wished on any topic. Seemed liberating!

OFC it was ripe for abuse. The "brigading" that you can get there never happens here. You perhaps do need to have a stake in a community before being allowed to shape the conversation.

In retrospect, /. moderation seems mature vs. reddit's adolescent approach, and I'm glad that /. is still here (and I still remember my login).

Reddits open forums breed interesting sub culture, but frankly if Reddit's IPO fails and shutters, I expect to go back to text Usenet, provided it's still around. Obviously light moderation, but still a panolpy of opinions.

There is no love list between Apple and Meta at this point.

While true, it is true. Fiat has a monopoly on the force that is used to back it. Crypto, without such a force, does not have that backing. And crypto is very unlikely to ever get it.

You might be upset that fiat has that monopoly by proxy, but you can be upset all you want, it's not going to change anything.
