JPMorgan Chase has curbed its staff's use of the ChatGPT chatbot, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday, citing a person familiar with the matter. From the report: The artificial intelligence software is currently restricted, the person said, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. The move, which impacts employees across the firm, wasn't triggered by any specific incident but reflects normal controls around third-party software. ChatGPT became an internet phenomenon in recent months. The fast-growing technology generates text, images and other media in response to a short prompt.

ChatGPT might be people trying to do things like offload the writing of some tedious financial document.
Unfortunately, ChatGPT has the habit of subtly fudging specifics, and those specifics can be a huge liability in the context of their work. It is popularly perceived as incredible with no significant downsides, and only in certain specific circles do you see people calling attention to the mistakes that it makes. So it makes sense for a company to impose safeguards to keep their employees from going all in with unacceptable risk.

This is no different than a company blocking Reddit, or Slashdot. Company security policies shouldn't be news.
Uh, "ChatGPT" is the new "crypto" when it comes to media buzzwords.
And "slow news" was replaced by clickbait a few billion in revenue ago. You should see the massage room the company security department just bought.

Based on what Satya Nadella has been saying, you will have to block a lot more than just ChatGPT if you're worried about your employees using this technology. His plans seem to be embedding these capabilities throughout Microsoft's suite of products. I doubt you are going to see companies block Word and PowerPoint any time soon.

Having worked for a similar firm in the past, we also were not allowed to use Google Translate, and when I discussed it with the people who made the decision, they said the concern was about accidental leakage of confidential information more than anything else. I presume the concern is similar here. Since GPT learns from submitted data, it would be possible to upload client data and then have it spit back out to someone else, which could expose the firm to financial liability.

JPMorgan business involves insider financial knowledge. Maybe the bosses were concerned that ChatGPT would be asked to work on something that contained privileged information.
