Slashdot PA: Thou Shalt Not Criticize Randian Thought

Comments Filter:
  • It's treating it like an instruction manual that's the problem.
    • Very true. If only people were more aware of when they cross that line. It's not really any different from taking any part of any other religious text and using it in that way.
      • While we're at it, it'd also be nice if most slashdotters stopped using Catcher In The Rye as an instruction manual.
        • More like Lord of the Flies

          • Not enough variety in the userbase.
            • Do they need to be different? They already believe themselves to be different; I suspect that is enough for that to play out. History is littered with the bodies of people who were (at minimum) 99% the same yet they opted to massacre each other over the remaining 1% that they thought they could never overcome.
              • Nah. Story doesn't work when everyone's working overtime to combine the worst aspects of Jack and Piggy into one hideous mutant beast.
                • That's more or less my point. They just don't realize they are building two identical beasts because they are so certain that the group building the other beast is actually building a rainbow striped unicorn. In reality there is almost no meaningful difference between the dominant groups here on slashdot, but they have convinced themselves that there is a great difference because such a difference helps to beautify their narrative of why they need to (at least) be suspicious of the other group.
            • Simple and direct. Cuts to the chase.

  • It's just not worth the hassle because logic and critical thought are beyond them. Just stick them in the same box as Scientologists, libertarians, and anyone who still thinks that Trump is a good president and, while it may not resolve anything, the rest of the world will be a better place :-)

  • I want to know how they turn a work of fiction like Shrugged into an "instruction manual".
At least the Bible actually says, to some extant, what Jesus wants, well the NT anyways.

    • The hard-core Randians believe that book is telling us that small government is The One True Path to happiness and enlightenment. Hence they take the words of Holy Mother Rand and in her name work to destroy government for those aims. Everyone who relies on government assistance or government employment be damned, as far as they are concerned.
  • Trump's ultra-right wing trolls are all over Facebook. I wonder how many are really Russian bots?

I never thought I'd see a worse president than Carter, and then we got Bush II. I never thought I'd see a worse president than Bush, and now...

    • I can't say I was looking for another reason to avoid facebook but you just provided one. I have simply refused to register there; I have enough things wasting my time without adding that one to the list.

I never thought I'd see a worse president than Carter, and then we got Bush II. I never thought I'd see a worse president than Bush, and now...

Indeed who would have expected that we would manage to elect a president who was such a total failure on pretty well every conceivable metric as to make GWB look intelligent and reasonable?
