  • No, seriously. I keep forgetting to pick up the 600 prints I had made through [The Site Formerly Known as Ofoto] that I opted to have delivered to CVS instead of to me in order to save about $20 in shipping charges.

      Ahh do tell.

I am thinking of building some kind of DVR (mythbox maybe?) but haven't gotten much beyond that stage. Tell me more about your PHVR plans....

      • I have a lot of Asian Satellite stuff we watch - so a Twinhan DVB is going in there too.

I have an old, 1.8 GHz micro ATX laying around w/ 1 GB RAM. It's going into a pretty, black HTPC case I got online for USD 99. Maxtor 200 GB came - USD60!!!

I am still investigating reasonable ways to slave the dish network system that my US relatives want.

I will probably run Media Portal on XP. If KnoppMyth works out, I may stick with that. I would really like a Windows hosted solution, that used VLC instead of WMP.
  • I put my order in simply AGES ago ... they must have lost it in shipping.

  • I understand she's backordered, though.
  • for DYPG
  • Well, let me see:

    • Last week, while in Toronto I remotely logged in to my personal file server to grab some files. One of the files kept aborting the transfer, so I decided to look into why. As it turns out, a few sector errors are starting to appear. Fortunately Future Shop had a 300GB PASA drive on sale for $109 (CAN) -- it should arrive Tuesday (and I'm really wondering if I should have bought two, although as the fileserver currently only has a 40GB drive it's going to be a massive improvement),

Yeah you probably wanted two, unless you have some other way to back stuff up :-)

Totally offtopic, but hows the long distance thing going? It must be frustrating, if nothing else.

It's still all rather weird. We've been able to chat online a few times this week, and it's been good for both of us. There have been a few times though when we've had to cut things short and have planned very specific times when we'd meet up online again, where I've been waiting but she hasn't shown up.

And I don't know if she's back with her old boyfriend, or what is going on, and so far I haven't asked

I almost forgot about this part. As it happens, most of the space on my file server are taken up with backups from my PowerBook anyhow, so I suppose the backup of the backup is the original ;).

I also do monthly full home directory backups of my PowerBook to my PowerMac at the office, which has 400GB of HDD space total, so I do have additional sffsite backups. And I do nightly backups of more critical data to my iDisk.

  • Well, ok, haven't ordered the Wii yet, but looking forward to it.

The perfect Love thing - well, my girlfriend gets kind of squirrely sometimes, goes on about how great the sex is but that she wants to dump me.

Now, I'm a guy, so when the sex is good, it's hard for me not to want that to continue. It's not that I'm not a nice person - she says I'm kind, compassionate, interesting, yada yada - but it's like she thinks she's not good enough for me (she's said stuff like that many times) and she doesn't know wh

Ship your girlfriend an affirmation like "I'm worthwhile and worth more today," or something. It sounds from your post like she needs some self-esteem or self-worth.

Oh, and while I'm not into console gaming the Wii does seem like it'll be fun. The Wiimote, potential Wiimakes of classic games... The list goes on.
  • on backorder at amazon
  • But it is very cool.
  • -Onkyo receiver
-USB opti mouse and a numeric keyboard for the laptop
-south beach diet cookbook (best of the diets the wife's tried - seriously, she's losing steady weight and the food options don't suck)
-Linksys WRT54G rounter (backup just in case - these fuckers never seem to last longer than a year)
  • "I'm waiting for you to show me some God damn gratitude. Without me, you'd still just be another sad-eyed, piano-playing drunk. I brought you into this game. I let you keep up with me. I made you a God damn hero today."

    "You didn't make me anything."

"I redeemed your pathetic, shitty life."

"I just did my job. You're the one with the fucking pathetic life. Go ahead and shoot, damn it."

"I want you to thank me first, Frank."

    "Shut up and shoot"

"All right, Frank. Sleep well, my friend."

I liked my phillips dvd player (easily made region free, and plays divix disks) but it has been flaking out lately :-( I tried cleaning it with a cleaner dvd, and blowing it out with compressed air (have you tried those yet?). The next step is ripping it open to see if there are any obvious dustbunnies, if not I will probably end up tossing it *sigh*. And if that happens, I have to figure out what to buy next.
      • Yeah, I unscrewed the thing and looked at it. No dead ants or anything sitting on the lens/optical/laser thingie Did a quick job with a Q-Tip and lens cleaner anyway, nothing obviously out of place. Gave it a couple good bitch slaps. That's the extent of my DVD player problem solving skills.

I am thinking my next DVD player should be a computer, but I have no idea where to even start here. I hate not being able to figure out wtf is broken; at least with a computer I have a chance at fixing it without buying a whole new box and pitching the old one.
    • I had to read this three times before I could place it. "Line of Fire", Clint Eastwood as an over-the-hill secret service agent, one of the last who was on duty when Kennedy was shot.
      Good flick.
  • 1) The wife just ordered lots of Disney-themed clothes and PJ's for the kids (yawn)
    2) My Tablet PC - it just got shipped off today for warranty repair*, and I'll be pining away the days until its return.

    * when booting the system (about 80% of the time), the video gets completely wacko and is unusable. They recently replaced the HD and system board, and that didn't do the trick, so we'll see. Thank you, 3-year parts & service warranty!
  • Was supposed to be here by now, won't even ship until Monday.
  • My wants are about the same as the rest of the people that commented. So really what I'm waiting for is money. Today I was out with my friend and we went to Circuit City because he thought I said I was going to buy some game. Then we looked at the HDTV's because I've been wanting one since my tv is old and kind of dying because the RCA ports are messed up and sometimes the sound and picture go out. I'd also like a new tv to compiment my xbox 360, to get all that hi-def goodness.

They have a CRT HDTV that'
  • I got a dual-CPU (Asus K8N-DL) motherboard, you see, waiting for this moment that the prices have just fallen by a lot, if you search around.

But I'm waiting until I've moved house: I decided that ordering before the move would be too complex.

I'm also waiting for my Sheaffer pen to be fixed.
  • I'm waiting for a parallel cable. I thought I had one, but it turned out to be a SCSI cable, so the Centronics end was completely too big.[1] I ordered it today, and it should be here by Thursday.

I am also waiting for a chance to have some one-on-one face time with Mom. I want to talk to her for a while, without worrying about who's going to interrupt next. There are some things that just have to be discussed in-person, not over the phone. :)

Then there's a few things on the "religious front", that I don
  • A round tuit.

If you need more, you can get 1000 of them for $99.98 here [ituit.com] :-) I always wanted to order a few of these; I figure they would be niftier than business cards.
  • Right now, I have some 20mm spacers waiting for me at the ELFA store in Oslo. Then there is the 1964 Mercedes which is having the long-awaited paint job this week. It is expected to be ready in the middle of next week.

Of things in the mail, I don't have anything on order right now, but there are a number of items that I will place orders for soon: a set of rubber seals for the 1964 Mercedes, and some kind of easy-to use wire-stripper for 30 AWG wire, something like one of these [jonard.com].

  • To replace the ones that ATA Airlines FUCKING STOLE!!!!!

Or maybe it was the TSA goons, no way to tell. But our experiences with ATA sucked regardless, so I don’t feel too bad about falsely accusing them of larceny (or raping baby nuns, for that matter).

Inside my suitcase was a smaller zippered bag with all the battery chargers and whatnot. They were in the camera carry-on two weeks prior, but with all the latest Security Theatre going on, I put them in the checked baggage for the return trip. Got home

I wonder how the people who did the "Klutz" books missed the boat on these...

  • I'm giving it until Wednesday, if my book doesn't show up by then I'm disputing the charge to my account.

    I'm impatient.
