Journal TechnoLust's Journal: Today, and Meeting Bethanie 46

I went to bed about 1:30 or so this morning, so I slept in late... about 9:30. I woke up, brushed my teeth, threw on some workout clothes and did some push ups. Then I went running. I had gone about 3/4 mile, so I was running by PH and SH's house. SH's dad's truck was there, and he's a great guy, so I stopped by. They were working on the house, so I stayed and helped them. SH went to the store and bought some sandwich stuff, so we had sandwiches. Then we worked on the house some more. It was about 13:00, so I ran back home, and took a shower. I dressed and called Bethanie, to make sure we were still on for dinner. I drove to Shogun Japanese Restaurant in Duluth, which is about 2 hours and 45 minutes from here.

I called Bethanie when I arrived and they were already inside. As I walked in, I was wondering how to greet her. I was considering hugging her, but I didn't know how Hubby would take that. But, as luck would have it, I didn't have to make that decision. When I walked in and saw them, I said hello, and before I knew it, Bethanie said, "I'm a hugger." and embraced me. Ok, so I hugged back. Then I met Hubby (turns out that isn't his real name) and her 2.5+ year old daughter. Bethanie was pretty much how I pictured her, except she had glasses. I don't wear glasses or contacts, so I always assume other poeple don't. The little girl was a cute as a button, she looked just like Bethanie, except her hair was darker and curly, which probably came from Hubby's genes. Em didn't make it, because of course, he sucks. :-) So we just talked really bad about him, and the aforementioned suckage. Just kidding Em.

Apparently this was both Bethanie's and my first time meeting someone from slashdot, although we've both met people from the internet before. We talked about who we talked to offline, and we talked about what a great guy gmhowell is beneath the "grumpy guy" facade. We talked about our families and where we grew up, and how she met Hubby. Kiddo was well behaved, but she freaked out when they set the oil of fire and it flamed up. Bethanie had to hold her and talk to her and calm her down. But after that, she liked watching the cook do everything. We talked about more slashdot people. I said my next trip would probably be to Cinci, to meet FK and glh. I doubt that one will be a day trip, though. Hubby and I talked techie stuff whenever B took Kiddo to the potty, and he was good guy. Very easy to get along with, expecially since we didn't know each other at all. We talked about my psyco ex girl friend, since Bethanie hadn't read that far back.

As for the food, the chef put on a great show, and the food was really good. The sushi was mediocre at best. The spider roll (soft shell crab) was ok, but the uni (sea urchin) was not good. It tasted old, I guess, or maybe had been frozen for a while or something. The only place any where near here that has uni is a place called Tomo in Knoxville, and there is a guy from Hawaii that owns a farm in Hawaii, and he flies them in fresh from his farm for this sushi place. So they are expensive, but very good.

Bethanie was in real life, exaclty like she is online, only SLIGTLY less vocal with the double entendres. We talked about a lot of things and just came to know each other better in general. I really enjoyed it, and if anyone else has the chance to meet Bethanie, I can definitely recommend it. She is not crazy, and she is not holding a gun to my head to make me write... Oww... and she didn't just hit me for mentioning... oww. :-)

Today, and Meeting Bethanie

  • I've long been fond of it.

I've met lots of people from online, but none from slashdot yet in person, unless you count people I met in person with no internet involvement who I later found were also on slashdot.
  • If anyone's planning a trip to PA look me up. I think kormoc and asv108 are around as well. Then there's the known entities that I see around me such as RecursiveGreen, luvsbway, neophenix, zartik, etc...
  • WTF?
I thought she was really klreck/$$$exy girl.
  • Are you going to be in Knoxville on the 5th or 6th of Sep?
    • I can be. Actually, the 6th is a Saturday, so that would be a good day for me to be up there. Are you going to be in town?
      • Will be in town all weekend. Plan on arriving early afternoon the 5th, checking out if anybody attends the 2600 meeting any more, then going to Charlie Pepper's around 6:30 for the Rocky Top Brigade Blogger's Bash. The 6th I am not sure about when I will be free. Heading back to the DC beltway on the 8th.
        • Well, let me know sometime next week if you know when you will be free on the 6th. If you won't be, I can try to make it up there on the 5th.
          • I thought you were in Knoxville for school or something?
            • Uhh... no. I graduated college in 2000. I live a little south of Knoxville, and work south of where I live. So I can be there on Friday night, and if needs be, I can crash at the apartment of the chick who invited herself to spend the night with me a while back. I was going to say that Saturday might be better for me, I could come up and buy some things I need and the hit Charlie Pepper's, but if Friday is better for you, we'll plan on it then. Let me know and I'll call that chick and tell her I need a
              • My bad for forgetting what you are upto now, sorry.

Looks like Friday is the best day for me, if it ends up being too difficult for you I will be around all weekend.

Main thing about Saturday is when my son wants to have his birthday stuff at my mom's place. Will be free late Saturday for sure, just not sure what time. I do know for sure that I will be at CP on Friday night because of the 'blogger thing and I just go there whenever I get back to Knoxville anyway.

Probably free Sunday too, then driving bac
  • Hot or not? Big breasts? Conveniently, Bethanie showed up after the great FK photo contest.
  • I'm in boston, and am willing to show around slashdotters if they don't mind taking a trolley tour or a duck tour. (not much for walking so the freedom trail walking tour, you're on your own for.) And bethanie is wonderful and brave and bethanie is a god and can i have my kitten back now bethanie? please????

just kidding about the kitten. No kittens were harmed in the making of this post.

      • "Duck" because it can go on land and water... you sit in a boat-shaped bus, which drives round the city and then right into the river. Lets you see lots of sights that you couldn't reach by land/water alone.

Boston has a soft spot for ducks, because the book "Make Way For Ducklings," was written about a duck in the Boston Commons, which is a park right downtown. So the duck tours were a natural.

        • Co-o-ol.

On an unrelated note, 1 thing that I've always loved about the US, is that when you write novels & stories, they seem take place in places that actually are in the US [Seattle, LA, Las Vegas, Boston, New York, etc.]. In Canada, they take place in various areas including Vancouver, but they usually seem to take place in Toronto, or actual places in the US. It's not the end of the world, but still.

  • I'm gonna have to write a JE about *my* impressions of the meeting, hunh?

I'll be happy to oblige, but you gotta tell me you want it. Tell me how you want me to give it to you. Tell me you want it baaaaad... Yeah. That's right. Get down on your knees and beg for it. Tell me why you deserve it. Tell me what a good little boy you've been!!

Just kidding. You don't have to do all that. Just ask nicely and maybe say please. :-)

    ....Bethanie....
    • Actually, after your email, I thought you would have already done one, just so you could have done yours before I did mine. I would like to read your impressions of me. After our conversation about online personas vs. real life personality, I thought you were pretty much the same online as off. Would you say the same about me? I mean, I know I didn't hit on any girls while we were there, but I was too involved in the conversation to notice the really hot blonde in the black pants and white top that was
      • I bet I miss seeing that sort of thing all the time. I need to work on my peripheral vision. That and the instinct to check the ring finger first. I miss that so many times, and then my friends have to correct me after I mention the girl at the next table over. Doh!

I must need more practice ogling.
