you make a compelling argument for why most windows users are morons!

Just wondering if I'm the only one around here not using any AV for a long time.

you aren't but if you are using Windows and no AV then you are a fool.

AFAIK, you can only get your virus on the internet (unless I'm underestimating USB's key viruses).

you absolutely are underestimating USB key viruses! stuxnet infected airgapped computers using a USB key.

Chrome pimped with Adblock and keeping myself far from the "dark side" of the web, I've never had any problem

while this helps it won't keep you completely safe.

Add to this the new lite Microsoft Security Essential (intagrated in Win8) to the lot and I'm surprised those company are still in business.

i'm not surprised at all. windows defender only detects ~75% of malware. at any given time, MS is about a year behind the AV curve.

there is a good chance you are infected with some malware.

Not it isn't. It is a 4th power relationship, which is polynomial, NOT exponential. You can often get away with using "exponential" to mean "a lot", but that doesn't work on a nerd website where "exponential" should only be used to mean exponential.

If the 18-wheeler is loaded up so that it weighs 10000 times as much as a typical car, then their tax should be 10000 as much per mile driven

No. You are assuming the relationship is linear. It is not. It is a fourth power relationship. A 18-wheeler only needs 10 times the weight per axle to do 10^4=10000 times as much damage. Since the weight of the trailer is distributed across 4 axles, and a car has 2, that means an 18-wheeler with the weight of 20 cars does 10000 times as much damage as a single car.

Smells like somebody's trying to Swiftboat the Clintons.

The Clintons are giving the swiftboaters plenty of ammunition. This certainly has the appearance of a sleazy deal. Mostly this sort of stuff just makes the people that hate Hillary, hate her even more, while having no effect on the people that like her. But eventually all these reports are going to have an effect on swing voters.

OTOH, using "roll your own crypto" is nortorious for individualized holes and weaknesses. It does tend to mean that the "one size fits all" means of breaking the code won't work, however. Or at least may well not work.

That said, if you have good enough communication to share custom crypto programs, you may be better off using a one-time pad....as that can't even theoretically be broken. But it does require a good source of random numbers (e.g. amplified triode vacum tube with no input so you're just amplifying noise). Such things are reasonably easy to build, but for some reason they aren't normal computer accessories. (Video cams watching a flickering flame are another good source.)

But custom crypto is hard to do correctly. AND it requires good communications to standardize the programs. So if you have the communication, a one time pad is better.

Racing bicycles often use a tire pressure over 100psi. Since road damage is entirely dictated by tire pressure, they are clearly the worst ... or maybe you don't know what you're talking about.

i did this with outlook prior to it allowing multiple exchange accounts, although didnt tackle the ip routing.

The routing is the hard part.....it's like some kind of weird reverse-NAT. It seems like there should be some simple IP-Tables command to do this based on MAC address, but I don't know what the command would be. Then he could run multiple instance of the same software (depending on the software).

I don't think there's a way to set up that kind of routing in Windows, though.
